Hypergraph-driven soft semantics flexible learning for visible–infrared person re-identification

Visible–infrared person re-identification (VI-ReID) aims to match the images of the person across different modalities. The main challenge in the engineering application of VI-ReID lies in the considerable modality gap between visible and infrared images. Existing methods primarily focus on learning low-order hard semantics to reduce the modality gap, such as specific body parts (e.g., arms, legs, and hands), which are modality-specific and sensitive to cross-modality variations, leading to difficult modality alignment. However, high-order soft semantics contain more modality-invariant features that can be flexibly learned by the model to better align the cross-modality features and reduce the modality gap. To better learn soft semantics, we propose a novel, hypergraph-driven soft semantics flexible learning network (HSFLNet), which extracts hierarchical semantics and flexibly explores the relationships among the extracted soft semantics by using hypergraph neural networks (HGNNs). Specifically, first, we propose a soft semantics mining (SSM) module to capture and flexibly fuse hierarchical features, which integrates low- and high-level semantics across channel and spatial dimensions to align modalities. Second, a hypergraph-driven soft semantics flexible learning (HSFL) module is designed, which employs HGNNs to explore the relationships among soft semantics. These semantics are adaptively learned through gating mechanisms to capture modality-invariant features, thereby reducing the modality gap. We evaluate the performance of HSFLNet on SYSU-MM01, RegDB, and low-light cross-modality (LLCM) datasets, achieving a Rank-1/mean average precision of 75.09%/72.11%, 95.82%/92.42%, and 65.42%/68.55%, respectively. In order to fully utilize lesion features and vascular structure and solve the problem of class imbalance, diabetes retinopathy (DR) grading is modeled as a dual-stage task, and the prior-guided dual-stage diabetes retinopathy grading model is proposed by designing an end-to-end hierarchical framework, consisting of XE-Net and MFC-Net. The former uses vascular structure from color fundus images as prior knowledge to guide the classification of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and non-PDR;the latter further classifies non-PDR images using color fundus images with four types of segmented lesions. The core of MFC-Net is the feature collaboration block (FCB) for multi-classification tasks, which is proposed to facilitate effective collaboration between global and local features. In addition, a class-balanced (CB) loss weight is also introduced to address the common class imbalance problem in DR datasets. The experimental results on two publicly available datasets, DDR and IDRiD show that the proposed model has significant advantages. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

MXenes are 2D materials with great potential in various applications. However, the degradation of MXenes in humid environments has become a main obstacle in their practical use. Here we combine deep neural networks and an active learning scheme to develop a neural network potential (NNP) for aqueous MXene systems with ab initio precision but low cost. The oxidation behaviors of super large aqueous MXene systems are investigated systematically at nanosecond timescales for the first time. The oxidation process of MXenes is clearly displayed at the atomic level. Free protons and oxides greatly inhibit subsequent oxidation reactions, leading to the degree of oxidation of MXenes to exponentially decay with time, which is consistent with the oxidation rate of MXenes measured experimentally. Importantly, this computational study represents the first exploration of the kinetic process of oxidation of super-sized aqueous MXene systems. It opens a promising avenue for the future development of effective protection strategies aimed at controlling the stability of MXenes.

In recent years, the unlabeled augmented reality system has been gradually applied to various mobile devices, among which stable, accurate, and fast registration is the key to realizing this function. For this technique, this paper introduces camera exposure parameters and puts the data association and pose estimation into a unified nonlinear optimization problem. Moreover, the direct monocular vision odometer is transplanted into the augmented reality system through the position adjustment module. We compare it with the traditional visual odometry method that matches the feature points. The results show that this improved method can be used to track more quickly and build a more visual semi-dense point cloud map, which can be used to support the registration and tracking of virtual objects in augmented reality.

In this paper, we design a hybrid (semi-direct) approach to simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for monocular cameras and apply it to augmented reality (AR) for monocular cameras. We combine the advantagesof the direct method and the feature point method. We use both photometric bundle adjustment which is robust to camera exposure time and motion bundle adjustment which is geometrically robust based on feature points to do tracking process. This approach can maintain an intuitive direct local map as well as a reusable global sparse feature point map. Through the processing of point clouds, such as PCA plane detection and grid reconstruction, we greatly improve the effect of the augmented reality system.

Copy-move forgery detection mainly includes block-based and interest point-based methods, but both of them have shortcomings, such as weak resistance to affine transformations, weak ability to locate the forged region. To solve these problems, a novel algorithm is proposed in this paper, which involves two-stage search algorithm. The first stage takes image blocks as the search unit, and in the second stage, the forger region is searched at the pixel level. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performants better compared to recent state-of-the-art methods.

High-resolution natural image matting plays an important role in image editing, film-making and remote sensing due to its ability of accurately extract the foreground from a natural background. However, due to the complexity brought about by the proliferation of resolution, the existing image matting methods cannot obtain high-quality alpha mattes on high-resolution images in reasonable time. To overcome this challenge, we introduce a high-resolution image matting framework based on alpha matte refinement from low-resolution to high-resolution (HRIMF-AMR). The proposed framework transforms the complex high-resolution image matting problem into low-resolution image matting problem and high-resolution alpha matte refinement problem. While the first problem is solved by adopting an existing image matting method, the latter is addressed by applying the Detail Difference Feature Extractor (DDFE) designed as a part of our work. The DDFE extracts detail difference features from high-resolution images by measuring the image feature difference between high-resolution images and low-resolution images. The low-resolution alpha matte is refined according to the extracted detail difference feature, providing the high-resolution alpha matte. In addition, the Matte Detail Resolution Difference (MDRD) loss is introduced to train the DDFE, which imposes an additional constraint on the extraction of detail difference features with mattes. Experimental results show that integrating HRIMF-AMR significantly enhances the performance of existing matting methods on high-resolution images of Transparent-460 and Alphamatting. Optimal control approach to stability criteria on Hill's equations

This paper gives a tutorial on how to prove Lyapunov type criteria by optimal control methods. Firstly, we consider stability criteria on Hill’s equations with nonnegative potential. By optimal control methods developed in 1990s, we obtain several stability criteria including Lyapunov’s criterion, Neǐgauz and Lidskiǐ’s criterion. Secondly, we present stability criteria on Hill’s equations with sign-changing potential in which Brog’s criterion and Krein’s criterion are included.
