The potential pattern changes in brain micro-structure can be used for the brain development assessment in children and adolescents by MRI scans. In this paper, we propose a highly accurate and efficient end-to-end brain age estimation network (BAENET) on T1-weighted MRI images. On the network, 3D skipping and outlier constraint loss are designed to accommodate deeper network and increase the robustness. Besides, we incorporate the neuroimaging domain knowledge into stratified sampling for better generalization ability for datasets with different age distributions, and gender learning for more gender-specific features during modeling. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method on the public ABIDE2 and ADHD200 benchmark, consisting of 382 and 378 normal children scans respectively. Our BAENET achieves MAE of 1.11 and 1.16, significantly outperforming the best reported methods by 5.1 % and 9.4%.

Heuristic black-box adversarial attacks on video recognition models

We study the problem of attacking video recognition models in the black-box setting, where the model information is unknown and the adversary can only make queries to detect the predicted top-1 class and its probability. Compared with the black-box attack on images, attacking videos is more challenging as the computation cost for searching the adversarial perturbations on a video is much higher due to its high dimensionality. To overcome this challenge, we propose a heuristic black-box attack model that generates adversarial perturbations only on the selected frames and regions. More specifically, a heuristic-based algorithm is proposed to measure the importance of each frame in the video towards generating the adversarial examples. Based on the frames’ importance, the proposed algorithm heuristically searches a subset of frames where the generated adversarial example has strong adversarial attack ability while keeps the perturbations lower than the given bound. Besides, to further boost the attack efficiency, we propose to generate the perturbations only on the salient regions of the selected frames. In this way, the generated perturbations are sparse in both temporal and spatial domains. Experimental results of attacking two mainstream video recognition methods on the UCF-101 dataset and the HMDB-51 dataset demonstrate that the proposed heuristic black-box adversarial attack method can significantly reduce the computation cost and lead to more than 28% reduction in query numbers for the untargeted attack on both datasets. Model-based diagnosis of incomplete discrete-event system with rough set theory

Fault diagnosis of discrete-event system(DES) is important in the preventing of harmful events in the system. In an ideal situation, the system to be diagnosed is assumed to be complete; however, this assumption is rather restrictive. In this paper, a novel approach, which uses rough set theory as a knowledge extraction tool to deal with diagnosis problems of an incomplete model, is investigated. DESs are presented as information tables and decision tables. Based on the incomplete model and observations, an algorithm called Optimizing Incomplete Model is proposed in this paper in order to obtain the repaired model. Furthermore, a necessary and sufficient condition for a system to be diagnosable is given. In ensuring the diagnosability of a system, we also propose an algorithm to minimize the observable events and reduce the cost of sensor selection.

Automatic localization of macular area based on structure label transfer

AIM： To explore feasibility and practicability of macula localization independent of macular morphological features. METHODS： A novel method was proposed to identify macula in fundus images by using structure label transfer. Its main idea was to match a processed image with the candidate images with known structures, and then transfer the structure label representing the macular to the processed image as a result of macula localization. In this way, macula localization couldn＇t be influenced by lesion or other interference any more. RESULTS： The average success rate in four datasets was 98.18%. For accuracy, the average error distance in four datasets was 0.151 optic disc diameter （ODD）. Even for severe lesion images, the proposed method can still maintain high success rate and high accuracy, e.g., 95.65% and 0.124 ODD in the case of STARE dataset, respectively, which indicated that the proposed method was highly robust and stable in the complicated situations. CONCLUSION： The proposed method can avoid the interference of lesion to macular morphological features in macula localization, and can locate macula with high accuracy and robustness, verifying its feasibility.

Cancer is a rapidly evolving disease, with complex physiological changes throughout its development. Different patients of the same cancer type may require distinct treatments depending on the level of development. Hence it is essential to identify the genes and biological processes strongly associated with cancer progression to design an effective treatment plan. Our study has found that cancer samples of the same development stage (or grade, subtype) tend to share highly unique co-expression patterns, providing considerably stronger discerning power than differential expressions for cancer staging (and grading, subtyping). Based on this, we have developed a framework for identification and analyses of genes and pathways strongly associated with a cancer's development through identification of co-expression patterns that become increasingly stronger or weaker over cancer samples from early through advanced stages. Functional analyses of such co-expressed genes reveal that (1) cell-cycle, immune response, ribosome, proteasome and oxidative phosphorylation, among others, strongly associate with cancer development, (2) the co-expression patterns among ribosome, proteasome and oxidative phosphorylation genes tend to become increasingly weaker as a cancer advances, for almost all cancer types, and (3) the co-expression patterns among cell cycle and immune response genes tend to become increasingly stronger with cancer progression. We anticipate that co-expression-based analyses like we present here will become a key technique for functional studies of cancer development and evolution.

Research on body fluid proteomes has led to the discoveries of context-dependent proteomics profiles and numerous novel disease biomarkers. Common challenges remain with current proteomics technologies about how to effectively handle the large variety of protein modifications in those fluids. To this end, computational efforts have shown early successes in identifying biomarker proteins in specific human diseases. In this article, we first reviewed published computational methods on this topic and then presented a new database system and a novel deep learning-based method for predicting body-fluid proteins in 16 types of human fluids. The results show that our new system outperforms existing methods and provides a highly promising tool to facilitate clinical proteomic discovery.

Machine translation is a classic problem in natural language process (NLP). Recent years, the encoder and decoder through an attention mechanism has become a trend. Google proposed a new simple network architecture, the Transformer using attention mechanisms only rather than CNN or RNN in 2017. However, it may lose some important information (e.g., grammatical component, etc) when using attention mechanism for whole *** propose a new brand model based on transformer using Group attention layers and group position embedding. It absorbs the features of Group-CNN combines the algorithm in computer vision (CV) and NLP. The model not only pays more attention to the ingredients (e.g., subject, predicate and adverbial, etc), but also enhances the connection of phrase. It outperforms SofA Transformer in using more syntactic information.

In order to generate a report for an enterprise where there is neither the API supporting from their existing website systems nor the granted database access rights approval, a daily business report generator system based on web scraping with k nearest neighbor (kNN) classification algorithm is proposed in this paper. It covers the web crawler technology that is to access existing website system and extract business data. The kNN algorithm is applied to identify the verification code on the login page, and the brief daily report generating in a spread-sheet style grid. Compared with some OCR engine for image recognition, the system in Python can automatically generate the brief daily business reports by the kNN algorithm, which is better than some library with default training set on validating the verification code. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Deep Bayesian optimization on attributed graphs

Attributed graphs, which contain rich contextual features beyond just network structure, are ubiquitous and have been observed to benefit various network analytics applications. Graph structure optimization, aiming to find the optimal graphs in terms of some specific measures, has become an effective computational tool in complex network analysis. However, traditional model-free methods suffer from the expensive computational cost of evaluating graphs;existing vectorial Bayesian optimization methods cannot be directly applied to attributed graphs and have the scalability issue due to the use of Gaussian processes (GPs). To bridge the gap, in this paper, we propose a novel scalable Deep Graph Bayesian Optimization (DGBO) method on attributed graphs. The proposed DGBO prevents the cubical complexity of the GPs by adopting a deep graph neural network to surrogate black-box functions, and can scale linearly with the number of observations. Intensive experiments are conducted on both artificial and real-world problems, including molecular discovery and urban road network design, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the DGBO compared with the state-of-the-art.
