This paper proposes Multi-modAl Retrieval model via Visual modulE pLugin (MARVEL), which learns an embedding space for queries and multi-modal documents to conduct retrieval. MARVEL encodes queries and multimodal documents with a unified encoder model, which helps to alleviate the modality gap between images and texts. Specifically, we enable the image understanding ability of the well-trained dense retriever, T5-ANCE, by incorporating the visual module's encoded image features as its inputs. To facilitate the multi-modal retrieval tasks, we build the ClueWeb22-MM dataset based on the ClueWeb22 dataset, which regards anchor texts as queries, and extracts the related text and image documents from anchor-linked web pages. Our experiments show that MARVEL significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the multi-modal retrieval dataset WebQA and ClueWeb22-MM. MARVEL provides an opportunity to broaden the advantages of text retrieval to the multimodal scenario. Besides, we also illustrate that the language model has the ability to extract image semantics and partly map the image features to the input word embedding space. Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) are emerging and have huge prospects since they have various applications in oceanography, environmental monitoring, and underwater communication. These networks contain low-cost submerged sensors that are mostly connected by way of acoustic media. Sensors are relatively new to underwater research, and thanks to recent technological development, they can now function at different depths. In this article, the author explores what UWSNs must do to operate smoothly by exploring the basic features that they must meet for further development. Real-time Underwater communication remains an open problem due to underwater acoustic channels important for undersea data acquisition, undersea navigation, and undersea remote sensing. To mitigate such challenges and in light of the use of new technologies, researchers seek to improve the reliability and reliability of UWSNs. Finally, there is great potential with UWSNs for investigating and exploiting the underwater environment by improving scenarios of different domains in line with subaqueous data and communications. © 2024 IEEE.

To answer math word problems (MWPs), models must formalize equations from the source text of math problems. Recently, the tree-structured decoder has significantly improved model performance on this task by generating the target equation in a tree format. However, current decoders usually ignore the hierarchical relationships between tree nodes and their parents, which hinders further improvement. Thus, we propose a structure called a hierarchical attention tree to aid the generation procedure of the decoder. As our decoder follows a graph-based encoder, our full model is therefore named Graph to Hierarchical Attention Tree (G2HAT). We show that a tree-structured decoder with hierarchical accumulative multi-head attention leads to a significant performance improvement and reaches a significant improvement on various strong baselines on both English MAWPS and Chinese Math23k MWP benchmarks. ATFS: A deep learning framework for angle transformation and face swapping of face de-identification

This paper proposes an effective framework for improving angle transformation and face replacement. This ATFS framework aims to solve the image distortion caused by angled face swapping in face de-identification. In the ATFS framework, TransNet and SWGAN were proposed based on generative adversarial networks. When TransNet uses neural networks to reconstruct images, it combines the predicted facial points. As a result, Transnet can locate the target’s facial features and generate multi-angle transformed images to achieve angle transformation. The SWGAN applies a complicated neural network that combines residual operations and self-attention modules to extract the input image features and replace the face region of the input image with the target image to achieve face de-identification. Both TransNet and SWGAN adopt discriminators and various loss functions to train the neural network and accurately accelerate the training process. The experimental results show that the proposed method can maintain high-quality images and avoid image distortion during face swapping for image angle transformation compared to previously proposed methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2023.

The detection of cyber threats and cybersecurity can be benefitted greatly from the advances in artificial intelligence (AI). Cyber threat detection is the main focus of cybersecurity. It has used various tools and techniques to find unauthorized access to systems, attacks, effective security incidents or applications, and networks. Owing to data flow presence over networks and extensive devices, the possibility of intrusion detection and cyberattacks has increased. Monitorization of this immense volume of data traffic is found to be tough, though machine learning (ML) techniques effectively support this task. This study develops an auction-based optimization with machine learning for cyber threat detection and classification (ABOML-CTDC) technique. The presented ABOML-CTDC technique concentrates on the identification and classification of cyber threats in accomplishing cybersecurity. The proposed ABOML-CTDC technique makes use of the ABO-based feature subset selection (ABO-FSS) technique to elect optimal features. For cyber threat detection, the ABOML-CTDC technique utilizes a variational autoencoder (VAE) model. Finally, the moth flame optimization (MFO) algorithm is exploited for the parameter selection of the VAE method del to improve the detection rate. The experimental validation of the ABOML-CTDC approach is tested on benchmark datasets and the results pointed out the promising results on detecting threats over recent state-of-the-art methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Developing creative material in STEM courses using integrated engineering design based on APOS theory

Over the past several years, creativity has been recognized as an important skill for success in STEM education, engineering design and computational thinking. There is limited research on how to apply Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate (CDIO) engineering design in STEM courses and how it affects students' creativity. This study strategically integrated computational thinking (CT), STEM, and CDIO engineering design, based on Action-Process-Object-Schema (APOS) theory, into a course. This study has adopted a framework to design creative learning materials and examined how this framework impacts students' creativity. This study used a pretest–posttest nonequivalent-groups design. The study investigated a STEM course which had 40 participants (n = 40, male = 11, female = 29) for 12 weeks. 6 weeks were spent using traditional teaching and 6 weeks integrating a CDIO framework into computational thinking. All the students in the course were college students with teacher college backgrounds. To examine the impact of our course, we used a questionnaire to examine the students’ creativity before and after the STEM course was applied. Our results show that our course had a significantly impact on our students’ creativity, particularly in the case of the male students. This finding is consistent with the findings of other research studies. This study also offers some suggestions for teachers who wish to improve their learning materials. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

The epidemic growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) objects have revolutionized Maritime Transportation Systems (MTS). Though, it becomes challenging for the centralized cloud-centric framework to fulfil the application requirements such as low latency and power utilization. The introduction of the distributed edge-centric framework has recently helped the IoT-enabled MTS to meet these requirements by manipulating the tasks at the edge of the networks. Despite the fact that MTS leverages mobile subscribers by overcoming inherent cloud computing limitations, data security and user privacy requirements in establishing the MTS setup are still non-trivial challenges. In this article, we develop a key agreement solution for mobile users to realize mutual authentication in a single round. Our protocol offers user anonymity to maintain user privacy, and it can prevent physical attacks by physically unclonable functions. Initially, the security analysis is conferred to substantiate our protocol's security persistence or strength. Later, its performance correlation is observed under the assumption of diverse metrics in a predefined empirical setup. The meticulous performance correlation endorses the precedence of our protocol over specified related protocols. © 2000-2011 IEEE.
