Applying Competition-Based Learning to Stimulate Students' Practical and Competitive AI Ability in a Machine Learning Curriculum

Contribution: This study incorporates competition-based learning (CBL) into machine learning courses. By engaging students in innovative problem-solving challenges within information competitions, revealing that students' participation in online problem-solving competitions can improve their information technology, and showcase competitions can enhance their competition ability. Background: The CBL model seamlessly integrates project-based learning and competition, placing a strong emphasis on both collective learning and outcomes. This approach cultivates motivation among team members, driving them to enhance their learning and translate knowledge into practical experience. Research Questions: The objective is to examine the disparities in the development of theoretical knowledge, information technology, AI practical ability, and competition ability among students participating in online problem-solving competitions and showcase competitions, and discusses the potential moderating effect of competition type on the relationships between variables in the hypothetical model. Methodology: The study involved 74 students enrolled in machine learning course at a university. The students were given theoretical knowledge and information technology pretests and posttests in the 2nd and 17th weeks, respectively. In the 18th week, the students presented their projects using slideshows and were graded by judges while also submitting their final competition proposal and slides. Findings: Students in online problem-solving competitions can enhance their information technology, while those participating in showcase competitions can improve their competitive ability. Moreover, the competition type was found to moderate the relationships among theoretical knowledge, information technology, and AI model accuracy. The findings suggest that incorporating CBL into machine learning courses effectively cultivates students' AI practical and competitive abilities. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Device error rates on current quantum computers have improved enough to where demonstrations of error correction below break-even are now possible. Still, the circuits required for quantum error correction introduce significant overhead and sometimes inject more errors than they correct. In this work, we introduce adaptive syndrome extraction as a scheme to improve code performance and reduce the quantum error correction cycle time by measuring only the stabilizer generators that are likely to provide useful syndrome information. We provide a concrete example of the scheme through the [[4, 2, 2]] code concatenated with a hypergraph product code and a syndrome extraction cycle that uses quantum error detection to modify the syndrome extraction circuits in real time. Compared to non-concatenated codes and non-adaptive syndrome extraction, we find that the adaptive scheme achieves over an order of magnitude lower logical error rates while requiring fewer CNOT gates and physical qubits. Furthermore, we show how to achieve fault-tolerant universal logical computation with [[4, 2, 2]]-concatenated hypergraph product codes. © 2025, CC BY.

The Ministry of Health of Indonesia has referred to pre-eclampsia as one of the most severe diseases affecting women. As an urgency, it is crucial to administrate pre-eclampsia cases for disease prevention as a long-term national healthcare strategy. Regarding health science, case data was significant in developing research and innovation. However, the main problem regarding pre-eclampsia case administration is data handling, recording, and management incompetence. Hence, this research proposed a conceptual design of a database for pre-eclampsia case administration. The proposed design covered conceptual, logical, and physical design. We elaborate the concept into three concepts of pre-eclampsia disease: pre-treatment, treatment, and post-treatment. This study proposed a solution to gain more data and study pre-eclampsia disease in Indonesia. © 2023 IEEE.

quantum non-Markovian noise in randomized benchmarking of spin-boson models

In non-Markovian systems, the current state of the system depends on the full or partial history of its past evolution. Owing to these time correlations, non-Markovian noise violates common assumptions in gate characterization protocols such as randomized benchmarking and gate-set tomography. Here, we perform a case study of the effects of a quantum non-Markovian bath on qubit randomized benchmarking experiments. We consider a model consisting of qubits coupled to a multimode Bosonic bath. We apply unitary operations on the qubits, interspersed with brief interactions with the environment governed by a Hamiltonian. Allowing for non-Markovianity in the interactions leads to clear differences in the randomized benchmarking decay curves in this model, which we analyze in detail. The Markovian model’s decay is exponential as expected whereas the model with non-Markovian interactions displays a much slower, almost polynomial, decay. We develop efficient numerical methods for this problem that we use to support our theoretical results. These results inform efforts on incorporating quantum non-Markovian noise in the characterization and benchmarking of quantum devices. © 2025, CC BY.

Childhood stunting is a condition anticipated to affect the growth potential of children under the age of five. With numerous stunting researches that have been conducted, stunting datasets are now widely available to facilitate stunting research. This provides an opportunity to implement machine learning (ML) principles to produce a broader insight or a novel technique in stunting prediction. A systematic literature review is necessary to discover the landscape of machine learning implementation in the application domain as a preliminary study for creating an effective research roadmap. This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of 22 curated manuscripts that focuses on identifying the ML models applied in stunting research, as well as the datasets used in such studies that were published during 2017-2022. The SLR process found that ML principles have been applied in stunting research since 2017, and the diversity of ML implementation has become more varied in 2021-2022. In terms of ML models, XGBoost and Random Forest are recognized as the two most utilized models, and stunting prediction is the most common ML implementation. The majority of stunting research utilizing ML has been conducted in Indonesia. Although national survey data has been the most commonly utilized dataset in stunting research, researchers in Indonesia have shown a preference for utilizing data from regional or independent surveys. This study will be followed by developing a classifier model for stunted children using XGBoost and Random Forest algorithms. The model will be trained on a dataset generated from StuntingDB. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce our system and submissions in BioASQ 12b phase b [1], highlighting a significant improvement with GPT-4 and the integration of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques. We describe our prompt engineering methods and the experimental procedures followed. Because GPT-4 has proven effectiveness in generating answers and its ability in the biological domain, our system utilizes GPT-4 to address biomedical question-answering (QA). Leveraging OpenAI's ChatCompletions API, we refined previous prompt engineering approaches [2] for BioASQ 11b phase b. This year, the addition of RAG techniques significantly improved the information retrieval capabilities of our system. Consequently, our latest submission employed what we experimented to be the most effective prompts and techniques, achieving excellent performance across multiple metrics in the fourth batch. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Manual investigation of chest radiography(CXR)images by physicians is crucial for effective decision-making in COVID-19 ***,the high demand during the pandemic necessitates auxiliary help through image analysis and machine learning *** study presents a multi-threshold-based segmentation technique to probe high pixel intensity regions in CXR images of various pathologies,including normal *** information is extracted using gray co-occurrence matrix(GLCM)-based features,while vessel-like features are obtained using Frangi,Sato,and Meijering *** learning models employing Decision Tree(DT)and RandomForest(RF)approaches are designed to categorize CXR images into common lung infections,lung opacity(LO),COVID-19,and viral pneumonia(VP).The results demonstrate that the fusion of texture and vesselbased features provides an effective ML model for aiding *** ML model validation using performance measures,including an accuracy of approximately 91.8%with an RF-based classifier,supports the usefulness of the feature set and classifier model in categorizing the four different ***,the study investigates the importance of the devised features in identifying the underlying pathology and incorporates histogrambased *** analysis reveals varying natural pixel distributions in CXR images belonging to the normal,COVID-19,LO,and VP groups,motivating the incorporation of additional features such as mean,standard deviation,skewness,and percentile based on the filtered ***,the study achieves a considerable improvement in categorizing COVID-19 from LO,with a true positive rate of 97%,further substantiating the effectiveness of the methodology implemented.

Improving ECAPA-TDNN Performance with Coordinate Attention

The current mainstream networks, such as squeeze and excitation residual neural network (SE-ResNet) and emphasized channel attention, propagation and aggregation based time delay neural network (ECAPA-TDNN), enhance the capability of speaker embedding extractors to extract more discriminative speaker embeddings by incorporating squeeze and excitation (SE) attention within the convolutional blocks. However, the SE attention focuses solely on encoding inter-channel information, overlooking the importance of spatial positional information and time-frequency information, which are crucial for the model’s performance. In this paper, we first experimentally compare the effectiveness of several mainstream attention mechanisms in the computer vision domain for the ECAPA-TDNN model. Next, we focus on the substantial improvements that coordinate attention (CA) brings to the ECAPA-TDNN model. The introduction of CA can help the model embed time-frequency information into the channel representation. Even without using AS-Norm, our proposed model achieves relative reductions of about 5.3% equal error rate (EER) and 5.5% minimum detection cost function (minDCF) on both the Voxceleb-O and Voxceleb-H test sets compared to the ECAPA-TDNN baseline model. In addition, the EER is relatively reduced by 9.46% on the CN-Celeb1 test set. This result strongly demonstrates that the CA module can effectively improve the generalization ability of the ECAPA-TDNN model. © Shanghai Jiao Tong University 2024.
