The selection of products and services is a central issue in electronic commerce. Available data is often not sufficient to allow a precise evaluation and user preferences are usually vague. In this paper, a model for deciding under imperfect information is presented. The decision model handles two types of imperfections: imprecisions on the side of the alternatives and vagueness in the preferences of the users. Incomplete description of the alternatives may result in imprecisions in the evaluation of their features. The decision model provides a framework to reduce these imprecisions by completing information from external sources. Besides, fuzzy query conditions allow users to express vague preferences. A scenario illustrates the use of the decision model where the goal is to select a rental apartment from classified advertisements with respect to its availability by public transport.

A multi-attribute decision model aiming at the selection of an efficient set of alternatives is presented. The major challenge is that the alternatives are not perfectly known, i.e., the associated values may be imprecise. Furthermore, for improved user friendliness, vague query conditions are allowed. Imprecise scores are described by probability distributions, vague query conditions by fuzzy predicates. The philosophy of the presented approach is to create an environment similar to the multidimensional spreadsheet front-end of data warehouses, in which the user can interactively discover the imperfect answers. In particular, numeric measures that allow an aggregated view of alternatives are defined. A geographic information retrieval scenario demonstrates the use of the decision model.

During the last decade object-oriented programming has grown from marginal influence into widespread acceptance. During the same period, progress in hardware and networking has changed the computing environment from sequential to parallel. Multi-processor workstations and clusters are now quite common. Unnumbered proposals have been made to combine both developments. Always the prime objective has been to provide the advantages of object-oriented software design at the increased power of parallel machines. However, combining both concepts has proven to be notoriously difficult. Depending on the approach, often key characteristics of either the object-oriented paradigm or key performance factors of parallelism are sacrificed, resulting in unsatisfactory languages. This survey first recapitulates well-known characteristics of both the object-oriented paradigm and parallel programming, and then marks out the design space of possible combinations by identifying various interdependencies of key concepts. The design space is then filled with data points: for 111 proposed languages we provide brief characteristics and feature tables. Feature tables, the comprehensive bibliography, and web-addresses might help in identifying open questions and preventing re-inventions. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In Wirth & Reinartz (1996), we introduced the early indicator method, a multi-strategy approach for the efficient prediction of various aspects of the fault profile of a set of cars in a large automotive database. While successful, the initial implementation was limited in various ways. In this paper, we report recent progress focusing on performance gains we achieved through proper process-based database support. We show how intelligent management of the information collected during a KDD process can both make the task of the user easier and speed up the execution. The central idea is to use an object oriented schema as the central information directory to which data, knowledge, and processes can be attached. Furthermore, it enables the automatic exploitation of previously stored results. Together with the query-shipping strategy, this achieves efficiency and scalability in order to analyze huge databases. While we demonstrate the usefulness of our solution in the context of the early indicator method, the approach is generally applicable and useful for any integrated, comprehensive KDD system. He has been responsible for the management of thePolarClass Traffic-ability Program since its inception and annually participates in the field data collection in the Arctic. His prior experience includes positions with the U.S. Coast Guard in the icebreaker design project the Military Sealift Command and at Newport News Shipbuilding. He is a graduate of N. Y.S. Maritime College and has a MS degree from the University of Michigan. I.F. Glen:received his professional degrees in naval architecture from the Royal Naval Engineering College Manadon Plymouth and RN College Greenwich London entering the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors in 1967. After serving as a Constructor Lieutenant in the Royal Navy's Far East Fleet for a short period he joined the Polaris submarine project team in Bath England in 1968. In 1971 he was seconded to the Canadian Department of National Defense in Ottawa as a Constructor Lieutenant Commander under NATO exchange arrangements where he had responsibilities initially for conventional submarines and latterly for computer aided conceptual design. He ventured to Bath England in 1974 and joined Forward Design Group. In 1975 he took a position as a civilian engineer in the Canadian Defense Department and was Head of Hull Systems Engineering from 1977 to 1979. He joined ARCTEC CANADA LIMITED in 1980 and in addition to managing ice model testing projects and full scale trials has specialized in structural response of ships to ice impact. He headed ARCTEC's Kanata Laboratory from 1981 to 1983 when he was promoted to president. This paper describes a multiyear program to make an operational assessment on the feasibility of a year-round Arctic marine transportation system to serve Alaska. Specifically, the three objectives were to: collect meteorological and ice data along potential marine routes; instrument the hull and propulsion machinery to improve design critera for ice-worthy ships; and demonstrate that ships can operate in midwinter Alaskan Arctic ice conditions. The U.S. Coast Guard's Polar class icebreakers were used to make the operational assessment by annually extending the route northward and by operating throughout the winter season. This paper reviews some of the operational and technical achievements to date, as well as plans for future Arctic deployments.

This open access book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” priority program 1593, which was launched by the German Research Foundation (“Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)”) to develop new approaches to software engineering with a specific focus on long-lived software systems. The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process.;Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes. In turn, the last part of the book presents key findings and spin-offs. The individual chapters there describe various case studies, along with their benefits, deliverables and the respective lessons learned. The 2010 Symposium on Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE 2010) was the 13th in a series of successful events that have grown into the main forum for industrial and academic experts to discuss component technology. CBSE is concerned with the development of software-intensive systems from - dependently developed software-building blocks (components), the development of components, and system maintenance and improvement by means of com- nent replacement and customization. The aim of the conference is to promote a science and technology foundation for achieving predictable quality in software systems through the use of software component technology and its associated software engineering practices. In line with a broad interest, CBSE 2010 received 48 submissions. From these submissions, 14 were accepted after a careful peer-review process followed by an online program committee discussion. This resulted in an acceptance rate of 29%. The selected technical papers are published in this volume. For the fourth time, CBSE 2010 was held as part of the conference series: Fed- ated Events on Component-Based Software Engineering and Software Archit- ture (COMPARCH). The federated events were: the 13th International S- posium on Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE 2010), the 6th - ternational Conference on the Quality of Software Architectures (QoSA 2010), andthe1stInternationalSymposium onArchitecting CriticalSystems(ISARCS 2010). Together with COMPARCH’s Industrial Experience Report Track and the co-located Workshop on Component-Oriented programming (WCOP 2010), COMPARCH provided a broad spectrum of events related to components and architectures.
