The purpose of this study is to check the suitability of seismic design values in the current Taiwan building code by using the neural network (NN) method. The neural network model input parameters are magnitude, epicenter distance,, and focal depth for each of the records in the checking stations, and the output is peak ground acceleration (PGA). The neural network model estimations showed that for 5 out of the 24 locations considered in the region, the design value recommended in the building code would be exceeded. Additionally, a curve fitting model, PGA = 8.96 (D f ) is developed for the relationship between horizontal PGA and focal distance (D f ), and reflecting the essential characteristics of strong motion in the region investigated. The present neural network model and the mathematical equation can provide useful information for both the relevant government agencies and practicing engineering designers.

Large design projects, such as those in the AEC domain, involve collaboration between designers from many different design disciplines in varying locations. Existing tools for developing and documenting designs of buildings and other artifacts tend to focus on supporting a single user from a single discipline. This paper introduces designWorld, a prototype system for enabling collaboration between designers from different disciplines who may be in different physical locations. designWorld consists of a 3D virtual world augmented with a number of web-based communication and design tools. designWorld uses agent technology to maintain different views of a single design in order to support multidisciplinary collaboration and address issues such as multiple representations of objects, versioning, ownership and relationships between objects from different disciplines.

Current construction worksite layout planning heavily relies on 2D paper media where the worksite planners sketch the future layout adjacent to their real environment. This traditional approach turns out to be ineffective and prone to error because only experienced and well-trained planners are able to generate the effective layout design with paper sketch. Augmented Reality (AR), as a new user interface technology, introduces a completely new perspective for construction worksite planning. This paper describes the concept and prototype of an AR-based construction planning tool, AR Planner with virtual elements sets and tangible interface. The focus of the paper is to identify and integrate worksite planning rules into the AR planner with the purpose of intelligently preventing potential planning errors and process inefficiency, thus maximizing the overall productivity. Future work includes refining and verifying AR Planner in realistic projects.

Formal usability evaluation of mixed reality (MR) environments to date has received very little attention in MR literature and research. While awareness of the need for usability evaluation of MR appears to be on the rise, the techniques needed to perform efficient, meaningful usability evaluation of these environments are not yet available. This paper presents how the usability of MR system interfaces could be evaluated by using a combination of heuristic evaluation and formative user testing. This paper demonstrates by applying in assessing an MR-based collaborative virtual environment prototype for mechanical design review - mixed reality-based collaborative virtual environment (MRCVE). The evaluation was implemented through a devised experiment where human subjects were invited to use the MRCVE system for identifying design errors collaboratively from virtual mechanical models. Usability suggestions were also identified for the interface of future versions of MRCVE

This paper looks at the conditions and the constitution of the boundary between participants and virtual environments. Based on two of the author's immersive, interactive scenarios, this boundary is regarded as a transformative extension of the participants' body. As the CAVE® environment Uzume is bodily explored through moving and gesturing, participants continuously affect the current environment's state and behaviour. The teleimmersive installation Maλa-Veil of Illusion connects two remote sites, creating a dynamically evolving virtual passage in-between. Here the design of interfacing the human participant and the virtual surrounding is inseparably interwoven with the evolutionary behaviours of the environments themselves. It challenges the Cartesian notion of the body as a passive receptor and addresses its constituting role of the relationship between the participant's embodied self and its computated representation. Considering this boundary as dynamic and permeable, enables a mutual relationship that is able to unfold beyond the author's predefined responses and interpretations. Copyright 2005 ACM.
