A Unified Architectural Approach for Cyberattack-Resilient Industrial control Systems

With the rapid development of functional requirements in the emerging Industry 4.0 era, modern industrial control systems (ICSs) are no longer isolated islands, making them more vulnerable to various cyberattack threats. Cyberattacks on ICSs may have disruptive consequences, such as significant social and economic losses. To proactively address the security issue of ICSs, this article presents a unified architectural approach from the perspectives of cyberthreats on ICSs, security-related ICS technologies, and methods for ICSs. It incorporates secure networks, secure control systems, secure physical processes, and their interactions seamlessly into a unified framework. To increase the resistance of ICSs against intrusions, the network security in our architectural approach is to secure the data in motion through the integration of secure network architecture, secure industrial network protocols, and secure end-to-end communications. The protection of control systems in our architectural approach is risk-based and hierarchical and encompasses prevention- and tolerance-centric defenses. It provides a layer-by-layer defense so that an acceptable level of cybersecurity risk is achieved and maintained. Aiming to maintain the stable operation of physical ICS processes, the secure control in our architectural approach implements a security process against process-aware attacks through a resilient safety control scheme. The global and systematic architectural approach presented in this article for the ICS cybersecurity will help facilitate the design and implementation of cyberattack-resilient ICSs in the networked world. For further development of ICS security technologies, emerging challenges are identified and discussed to motivate future research efforts.

This paper studies the distributed multi-agent resilient optimization problem under the f-total Byzantine attacks. Compared with the previous work on Byzantine-resilient multi-agent exact optimization problems, we do not require the communication topology to be fully connected. Under the redundancy of cost functions, we propose the distributed comparative gradient elimination resilient optimization algorithm based on the traditional assumptions on strongly convex global costs and Lipschitz continuous gradients. Under this algorithm, we successfully prove that if the number of in-neighbors of each normal agent is greater than some constant and the parameter f satisfies certain conditions, all normal agents' local estimations of the global variable will finally reach consensus and converge to the optimized solution. Finally, the numerical experiments successfully verify the correctness of the results. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Optimizing Pinning control of Complex Dynamical Networks Based on Spectral Properties of Grounded Laplacian Matrices

Pinning control of a complex network aims at forcing the states of all nodes to track an external signal by controlling a small number of nodes in the network. In this paper, an algebraic graph-theoretic condition is introduced to optimize pinning control. When individual node dynamics and coupling strength of the network are given, the effectiveness of pinning scheme can be measured by the smallest eigenvalue of the grounded Laplacian matrix obtained by deleting the rows and columns corresponding to the pinned nodes from the Laplacian matrix of the network. The larger this smallest eigenvalue, the more effective the pinning scheme. Spectral properties of the smallest eigenvalue are analyzed using the network topology information, including the spectrum of the network Laplacian matrix, the minimal degree of uncontrolled nodes, the number of edges between the controlled node set and the uncontrolled node set, etc. The identified properties are shown effective for optimizing the pinning control strategy, as demonstrated by illustrative examples. Finally, for both scale-free and small-world networks, in order to maximize their corresponding smallest eigenvalues, it is better to pin the nodes with large degrees when the percentage of pinned nodes is relatively small, while it is better to pin nodes with small degrees when the percentage is relatively large. This surprising phenomenon can be explained by one of the theorems established.

Cancer-associated biomarker genes play an indispensable role in the intricate tapestry of cancer development and manifestation. The expression of biomarkers in different types of tumor cells has beneficial implications for shedding light on the development of various cancers, guiding clinical diagnosis, and treatment. Microarray technology enables the expression levels of thousands of genes in samples to be sequenced simultaneously. However, sparse and high-dimensional microarray data present a formidable challenge in identifying biomarker genes. This study presents EREF-NSGA2, a novel method for cancer biomarker selection from microarray data, employing a hybrid gene selection approach. Firstly, the combination of the wrapper and embedded gene selection methods is proposed to filter the microarray data, which efficiently decreases the search space of the algorithm. After that, the improved NSGA-II algorithm is used to search the genes subset obtained from the previous step to reach the optimal subset of cancer biomarker genes. The proposed EREF-NSGA2 is compared with other reported methods on six cancer benchmark gene expression datasets. A detailed biological analysis is performed to analyze the relationship between the selected genes and the cancer data sets they belong to. To summarize, EREF-NSGA2 proves its effectiveness in selecting a feature subset comprising the fewest genes while maintaining the highest classification accuracy.

This study aims at the controllability of multi-agent systems (MASs) with cooperation and competition in a matrix-weight-based signed network based on the leader-follower structure from an algebra-theoretic perspective, which is a generalization of a scalar-weighted signed network due to increasing the dimension of controllable matrix and controllable subspace for such MASs. Therefore, comparing with existing results, relying on matrix coupling links, the study indicates that controllability can be attained in a structurally balanced matrix-weight-based network. Algebra-theoretic characterizations for attaining controllability are provided. Moreover, the algebraic uncontrollable conditions for such network are examined. Topology identification of complex networks is an important and meaningful research direction. In recent years, the topology identification method based on adaptive synchronization has been developed rapidly. However, a critical shortcoming of this method is that inner synchronization of a network breaks the precondition of linear independence and leads to the failure of topology identification. Hence, how to identify the network topology when possible inner synchronization occurs within the network has been a challenging research issue. To solve this problem, this article proposes improved topology identification methods by regulating the original network to synchronize with an auxiliary network composed of isolated chaotic exosystems. The proposed methods do not require the sophisticated assumption of linear independence. The topology identification observers incorporating a series of isolated chaotic exosignals can accurately identify the network structure. Finally, numerical simulations show that the proposed methods are effective to identify the structure of a network even with large weights of edges and abundant connections between nodes.

Accurate prediction and effective control are the key to reducing the impact of landslide disasters. In practice, most of recent studies focus on landslide displacement prediction and control. In this paper, we propose a new control method based on the level prediction of landslide evolution state, namely down-level control. The core components are level predictor and interval predictor in this method. Specially, we first transform the traditional displacement regression prediction problem into a level classification prediction problem by labeling discrete category information for landslide sample points. Then the level predictor based on Multi-task learning-Stacked long-short time memory network (MTL-SLSTM) is established to predict the state of the landslide and judge whether the system needs to be controlled. Finally, we design a safe rainfall interval predictor based on bootstrap method to obtain the safe value of control variation. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is verified on Baishuihe and Shiliushubao landslides. The results show the proposed down-level control method is valid and more intuitive. © 2021 IEEE.

Interactive medical image segmentation methods have become increasingly popular in recent years. These methods combine manual labeling and automatic segmentation, reducing the workload of annotation while maintaining high accuracy. However, most current interactive segmentation frameworks are limited to 2D image data, and are not suitable for 3D image data due to the large size and high complexity of 3D data, as well as the challenges posed by information asymmetry and sparse annotation. In this paper, we propose SliceProp, an interactive segmentation framework that implements slice-wise label Bidirectional Propagation (LBP) for 3D medical image segmentation. SliceProp extends the interactive 2D image segmentation algorithm to 3D image segmentation, and can handle 3D data with large size and high complexity. Moreover, equipped with a Backtracking Feedback Check (BFC) module, SliceProp effectively addresses the issues of information asymmetry and spatial sparse annotation in 3D medical image segmentation. Additionally, we adopt an uncertainty-based criterion to pri-oritize the slices to be refined interactively, which enhances the efficiency of the interaction process by enabling the model to focus on the regions with the most unreliable predictions. SliceProp is evaluated on two datasets and achieves promising results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Wearable robots have become a prevalent method in the field of human augmentation and medical rehabilitation. Typical wearable robots mainly include exoskeletons and prostheses. However, their functions are limited due to dedicated design. In recent years, Supernumerary Robotic Limbs (SRLs) have become a hot spot in the field of wearable robots. Different from exoskeletons and prostheses, SRLs compensate and strengthen human abilities by providing extra limbs. This advantage allows SRLs to assist users in a novel way, rather than substituting missing limbs or enhancing existing limbs. However, finding a trade-off between wearability, efficiency, and usability of those SRLs is still an issue. This paper presents the state of the art in SRLs and discusses some open questions about SRLs' design and control for further research. This review covers the following areas: (1) Basic concepts and classifications of SRLs;(2) The literature retrieval methodology;(3) Design functions of different types of SRLs, including their positive and negative aspects;(4) Different control strategies of SRLs, including positive and negative aspects, and some improvement methods in applying SRLs;(5) The impact on human body schema while using SRLs;(6) Open challenges and suggestions for future development. This review will help researchers understand the current state of SRLs and provide comprehensive knowledge foundations for them.

Optimal maintenance planning in building retrofitting with interacting energy effects

This paper extends a control system framework for the maintenance planning investment decision for building energy retrofitting. The interacting energy and reliability effects that are ignored by previous models are incorporated in the current study. A set of energy efficiency and population decay models with interacting parameters and decision variables are established, and a state-space model with coupled nonlinear equations is obtained. The control objectives are maximizing the energy savings and financial paybacks with limited budget during a finite time period. An model predictive control (MPC) controller is designed for the problem. The interacting effects and effectiveness of the proposed approach are verified by the case study, where improvements from the modeling considering interaction are revealed.
