Biologically imitated capacitive flexible sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and ultralow detection limit based on frog leg structure composites via 3D printing

Inspired by the geometry of the frog leg, flexible capacitive pressure sensors utilizing a three-dimensional (3D) array of biomimetic frog-leg structure composites for use as dielectric layer is proposed. We demonstrate a low-cost and facile strategy to fabricate a dielectric layer with 3D features via 3D printing technique. The feasibility of using bionic frog-leg structure as a dielectric layer in capacitive pressure sensors is evaluated via finite element analysis (FEA). Several dimensional parameters of the dielectric layer structure were optimized via an experimental study of the pressure-sensing characteristics. The 3D dielectric structure reduces the Young's modulus of the dielectric layer and retains the stability of the sensor. The flexible capacitive pressure sensor exhibits improved sensing performance, including a broad pressure detection range (0-200 kPa), ultralow detection limit (0.5 Pa), ultrahigh sensitivity (0.583 kPa-1 in the range of 0-1.2 kPa), rapid response and recovery (40 ms and 45 ms at 1 kPa), and reliable long-term stability. This work is expected to open up possible applications in intelligent robots, wearable electronic devices, information perception, and human-machine interaction.

Heterostructures have promising applications in photonics and optoelectronics, mainly due to their high electron mobility and broadband photoresponse covering visible, infrared, and terahertz (THz) ranges. However, it is challenging to detect heterostructures in high definition with conventional THz techniques. Here we demonstrate a THz nanoscopic imaging method which is capable of resolving the local THz response of PbS-graphene heterostructures based upon a sophisticated THz near-field optical microscope. The interaction between the THz near field and the heterostructure is further explored by numerical simulations. The results reveal that both the composition and structure of the layers composing the heterostructure contribute to the THz signal. Furthermore, we develop a reliably finite dipole model suitable for retrieving THz optoelectronic properties of multilayered systems from measured THz hyperspectra, and realize mapping the local effective permittivity and conductivity of the heterostructure. Our work discloses the mechanism of the THz response of heterostructures, and provides a useful method for high-definition quantifying complex THz materials and devices.

Privacy Masking Stochastic Subgradient-Push Algorithm for Distributed Online Optimization

This article investigates the problem of distributed online optimization for a group of units communicating on time-varying unbalanced directed networks. The main target of the set of units is to cooperatively minimize the sum of all locally known convex cost functions (global cost function) while pursuing the privacy of their local cost functions being well masked. To address such optimization problems in a collaborative and distributed fashion, a differentially private-distributed stochastic subgradient-push algorithm, called DP-DSSP, is proposed, which ensures that units interact with in-neighbors and collectively optimize the global cost function. Unlike most of the existing distributed algorithms which do not consider privacy issues, DP-DSSP via differential privacy strategy successfully masks the privacy of participating units, which is more practical in applications involving sensitive messages, such as military affairs or medical treatment. An important feature of DP-DSSP is tackling distributed online optimization problems under the circumstance of time-varying unbalanced directed networks. Theoretical analysis indicates that DP-DSSP can effectively mask differential privacy as well as can achieve sublinear regrets. A compromise between the privacy levels and the accuracy of DP-DSSP is also revealed. Furthermore, DP-DSSP is capable of handling arbitrarily large but uniformly bounded delays in the communication links. Finally, simulation experiments confirm the practicability of DP-DSSP and the findings in this article.

Neural Network-Based Event-Triggered Adaptive Control Algorithms for Uncertain nonlinear Systems with Actuator Failures

The adaptive control for strict-feedback nonlinear systems has drawn a lot of attention in various communities. Since neural network is a useful universal-approximator to approximate unknown plant model, the neural network-based adaptive control for nonlinear systems has attracted substantial interest over decades. Furthermore, to reduce the controller updating and save the control resource, the event-triggered mechanism has been widely applied. In this paper, the RBF neural network is applied to construct the state and composite disturbance observers and the back-stepping and Lyapunov-like method are applied to design the event-triggered adaptive controller. The theoretical framework of adaptive fault-tolerant control issue for strict-feedback nonlinear system that suffer from both unknown mismatched disturbance and actuator failures is formulated. This paper comes up with a novel event-triggered control strategy to guarantee that the tracking issue is resolved with better desired performance. In this study, a unified theoretical mechanism is developed to tackle the case where some factors consisting of unknown state variables, unknown mismatched disturbance, and actuator failures as well as event-triggered effects are merged together. We expect to extend the proposed method for the self-triggered case.

Impurity substitution is effective for studying the intrinsic properties of a quantum material. When the target element has multiple Wyckoff positions, it is challenging but essential to know the exact position and occupancy order of the impurity atoms. Via comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations, we establish the Ni substitution road map in van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2. The results unambiguously reveal that in (Fe1-x Ni-x)(3)GaTe2, Ni atoms initially form interlayer gap Ni3 sites when x < 0.1 and then gradually occupy Fe2 sites. When x > 0.75, they start to substitute for Fe1 sites and eventually realize full occupation. Accordingly, T C and saturation moments both show nonlinear decreases tied to the different roles of Ni3, Fe1, and Fe2 sites in the spin Hamiltonian. The results not only yield fruitful insights into the roles of different Fe sites in Fe3GaTe2 but also set a paradigm for the future study of impurity substitution on other quantum materials.

Considering the extensive applications of the model predictive control (MPC), this paper investigates the MPC problem with an application to the optimal output consensus of high-order multi-agent systems. A synchronous distributed optimization algorithm for the MPC problem is proposed, and we further devise its asynchronous version. The algorithm allows agents to choose the uncoordinate step-sizes depending on local information, which improves the flexibility of multi-agent systems. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is guaranteed if the positive uncoordinate step-sizes satisfy the explicit conditions. Compared with the synchronous version that needs a global clock to control all agents for communication and update, the asynchronous algorithm does not require each agent in the multi-agent systems to update and communicate simultaneously, and also converges to the optimal global solution to the problem. The numerical simulations demonstrate the availability of the proposed algorithm and the validity of the theoretical results.

As a powerful tool, the minimum error entropy (MEE) criterion has aroused extensive attention within the field of adaptive filtering recently. However, most MEE-based methods cannot be applied to the complex domain. Although the maximum total complex correntropy (MTCC) algorithm has been applied in errors-in-variables (EIV) model successfully when the noise is impulsive, it would degenerate obviously in some non-Gaussian noise cases, especially in the multi-peak distributed noise case. In this paper, we take the EIV model and complex domain into consideration and then propose a minimum total complex error entropy (MTCEE) algorithm. More importantly, the local stability and steady-state behavior of MTCEE are analyzed theoretically. Finally, we apply the MTCEE algorithm to the system identification and channel estimation, considering situations where noise affects both input and output. Through these applications, we demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of MTCEE under EIV model in complex domain.

Decentralized proximal splitting algorithms for composite constrained convex optimization

This paper concentrates on a class of decentralized convex optimization problems subject to local feasible sets, equality and inequality constraints, where the global objective function consists of a sum of locally smooth convex functions and non-smooth regularization terms. To address this problem, a synchronous full-decentralized primal-dual proximal splitting algorithm (Syn-FdPdPs) is presented, which avoids the unapproximable property of the proximal operator with respect to inequality constraints via logarithmic barrier functions. Following the proposed decentralized protocol, each agent carries out local information exchange without any global coordination and weight balancing strategies introduced in most consensus algorithms. In addition, a randomized version of the proposed algorithm (Rand-FdPdPs) is conducted through subsets of activated agents, which further removes the global clock coordinator. Theoretically, with the help of asymmetric forward-backward-adjoint (AFBA) splitting technique, the convergence results of the proposed algorithms are provided under the same local step-size conditions. Finally, the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated by numerical simulations on the least-square and least absolute deviation problems. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) exhibit the strong capability to address spatiotemporal dynamic problems. Recent research has explored the hardware SNN systems to solve the spatiotemporal problems in realtime. The Network-on-Chip (NoC) is an effective scheme for building large-scale hardware SNNs. However, for the existing NoC-based hardware SNNs, large area overhead and hardware power are consumed by their interconnections, because of complex topologies and router structures. Therefore, in this work a novel Unidirectional and Hierarchical on-Chip Interconnected Architecture (UHCIA) is proposed to address this problem. The proposed UHCIA mainly combines the novel hybrid topology of unidirectional multiple loops and rings, and uses a deflection router technique. Experimental results show that compared to other works, the UHCIA achieves similar to 23.6X of area reduction and similar to 6.4X of power reduction, with high system throughput and biological real-time computations.

Distributed Constrained Optimization With Asynchrony and Delays

This brief investigates a distributed composite optimization problem over an undirected network with equality constraints. The optimization problem includes a smooth term and two possibly non-smooth terms. Most existing results are devoted to developing distributed algorithms in a synchronous setting with a global clock, where the agents cannot proceed to the next iteration until the slowest agent completes its update. A new asynchronous distributed primal-dual forward-backward splitting algorithm (AD-PDFBS) is presented to solve this problem. Each agent can compute and communicate independently at different times, for different durations, with the information it has even if the latest information from its neighbors is not yet available. The convergence of AD-PDFBS is proved by transforming the asynchronous algorithm into a fixed-point problem utilizing the operator splitting scheme under bounded delay assumption. Experiment result confirms the effectiveness of AD-PDFBS.
