Since the 9.11 incident, the impact of large commercial airliners on nuclear power plants and other important national facilities has attracted worldwide attention. The safety of flying objects hitting nuclear containment has become one of the important research topics in the field of nuclear power generation. In this paper, the impact resistance of non-prestressed and prestressed concrete slabs is studied through detailed experiments and numerical studies. By non-bonding rear sheeting, prestress of about 10MPa is applied to concrete slabs measuring 1400mm×600mm, which are then hit by hemispherical steel hammers (590kg) at heights of 2m and 4m above the center of the span. The impact force, displacement, and the reinforced concrete slab and the prestressed concrete slab are compared. In LS-DYNA finite element software, the CSCM concrete structure model is used to study the numerical values of the experiments carried out. It has been found that with the increase of impact energy, the deformation produced by reinforced concrete slabs increases and is not recoverable. On the other hand, after applying presession, the impact force of prestressed concrete slabs was increased by 53.8% and displacement was reduced by 45% due to the increase of the stiffness of the plate. The maximum reproduction deviation of the impact force and displacement values is 17% and 14%, respectively. The emergence upon cooling of an ordered solid phase from a liquid is a remarkable example of self-assembly, which has also major practical relevance. Here, we use a recently developed committor-based enhanced sampling method [Kang et al., Nat. Comput. Sci. 4, 451-460 (2024);Trizio et al., arXiv:2410.17029 (2024)] to explore the crystallization transition in a Lennard-Jones fluid, using Kolmogorov’s variational principle. In particular, we take advantage of the properties of our sampling method to harness a large number of configurations from the transition state ensemble. From this wealth of data, we achieve precise localization of the transition state region, revealing a nucleation pathway that deviates from idealized spherical growth assumptions. Furthermore, we take advantage of the probabilistic nature of the committor to detect and analyze the fluctuations that lead to nucleation. Our study nuances classical nucleation theory by showing that the growing nucleus has a complex structure, consisting of a solid core surrounded by a disordered interface. We also compute from the Kolmogorov’s principle a nucleation rate that is consistent with the experimental results at variance with previous computational estimates. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Soil moisture field has an obvious influence on the stability of reservoir bank slope. Thus, effective, real-time, reliable, and high precision monitoring methods are imperative. However, the existing soil moisture monitoring methods have more or less deficiencies. In this paper, a novel soil moisture monitoring and estimation method based on an ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) array is proposed which is suitable for large-scale in-situ monitoring. A soil moisture monitoring device is designed and fabricated. This monitoring device consists of several monitoring units, and each monitoring unit consists of a soil container, protector and two UWFBG. laboratory calibration tests were conducted to establish a relationship between wavelength change and soil moisture content. The test results show that the monitoring accuracy of the device is related to the quality of the loaded dry soil. When the mass of dry soil is 100 g, the monitoring accuracy of soil moisture content is 1.68 % (mass ratio). © 2022 SPIE

Energy Harvesting of Novel Smart Concrete Based on Nanotechnology: Experimental and Numerical

This paper focuses on energy harvesting and smart controls in concrete structures using both experimental and theoretical approaches. The growing demand for sustainable energy solutions has led to innovations in materials like concrete, which offer energy conversion and efficient control possibilities. This study introduces a novel concept for concrete structures using piezoelectric nanoparticles, specifically zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO), offering three key benefits: (a) enhanced strength, (b) energy harvesting and storage, and (c) smart control. The experimental phase involves modifying concrete structures with energy harvesting technologies. Dispersion of nanoparticles in water is a key challenge, addressed through magnetic stirring, ultrasonic homogenization, and mechanical stirring. Multiple concrete specimens with nanoparticles were produced, followed by tests including compressive strength assessments, energy harvesting under mechanical loads, and intelligent control of concrete deflection through voltage application. On the theoretical front, modeling and numerical methods predict the behavior of energy harvesting concrete structures. The precise five-parameter theory, accounting for Poisson's effect, is employed for modeling. After deriving governing equations, differential quadrature numerical technique computes deflection and output voltage. Comparisons and validations are made between experimental and simulation results. The experiments reveal that the optimal ZnO nanoparticle content is 0.9%, leading to significant compressive strength improvements of 22.14%, 27.31%, and 34.28% for 7, 14, and 28-day samples, respectively, compared to controls. Beyond this content, compressive strength diminishes. Moreover, 0.9% ZnO-concrete produces an output voltage of 32 volts, well-justified technically and economically. Distributed fiber optic sensing techniques are suitable for pipeline leakage monitoring owing to their long-distance sensing abilities. In this work, a novel pipeline leakage detection and localization method using a distributed fiber optic sensor is proposed. In contrast to conventional methods, the optical fiber is placed in the fluid inside the pipeline without any constraints. When leakage occurs, the local flow field close to the leakage position is disturbed and the fluid pressure caused by the fluid disturbance leads to optical fiber deformation or vibration. With the help of the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflection technique, the fluid disturbance can be detected over a long distance. This work first analyzed the fluid action on the optical fiber. Then, the effects on the fluid field of the local leakage are obtained through finite element simulations. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated via a series of laboratory experiments. © 2022 SPIE

Landslide disasters often cause huge property losses and casualties. Therefore, distributed real-time landslide deformation monitoring is of great significance to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, and the stability evaluation of landslide. Ultra-weak fiber Bragg grating (UWFBG) sensing technology can realize the measurement distance of 20 km for single optical fiber, and the single measurement time is less than 1 s. Therefore, it has the potential of distributed real-time monitoring. In this work, a novel distributed real-time landslide deformation monitoring method based on UWFBG was proposed. And this method was applied to a real landslide in Yibin City, Sichuan Province, China, to monitor its deformation in situ. The feasibility of the monitoring method was verified and the landslide deformation was analyzed. The in-situ monitoring results show that on the time scale, the local deformation of the landslide is gradually increasing;on the spatial scale, there are some points with large local deformation, but the overall deformation in the monitoring area is small. The monitored results also suggest that the landslide is in a stable state during the monitoring period. © 2022 SPIE

Structural health diagnosis has been investigated following a data-driven machine learning paradigm. However, the model accuracy and generalization capability highly rely on the quality and diversity of datasets. This study established a framework for structural health diagnosis under limited supervision. Firstly, an image augmentation algorithm of random elastic deformation, a novel neural network with self-attention and subnet modules, and a task-aware few-shot meta learning method were proposed for vision-based damage recognition. Secondly, deep learning networks were established to model intra- and inter-class temporal and probabilistic correlations of different quasi-static responses for condition assessment. Finally, a two-stage convergence criterion merging with the subset simulation and Kriging surrogate model was designed for reliability evaluation. The large-span spatial hub structure is an important urban lifeline project with complex structure form and many types of internal non-structural components. As one of the main non-structural components, the safety of the piping system is important to ensure the normal use of the overall function of the large span hub structure. Once damage occurs to the piping system under the action of earthquake, it will affect the traffic operation and urban rescue, resulting in incalculable casualties and property damage. To assess the impact of diverse connection locations on the piping system’s response, this study investigates acceleration and response amplification factors at various positions within the reticulated shell structure. Through this analysis, we underscore the critical need to consider the spatial coupling effect for the piping system within the reticulated shell structure. In this study, the seismic response and damage modes of the internal piping system in a prevalent type of reticulated shell structures are investigated. This is achieved by establishing a coupled finite element model of the reticulated shell structure and the piping system. Three distinct damage modes of the piping system and their corresponding computational signs are identified, facilitating the creation of fragility curves for the piping system. The results highlight significant variation in the damage degree of the piping system at different locations. Additionally, past studies have shown a notable probability of damage to piping systems, even under very slight ground shaking, emphasizing the necessity for careful consideration. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The composite structure composed of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and normal concrete (NC) has been widely applied to engineering structures. U-shaped shear studs play an important role in the combination of the UHPC-NC interface. To investigate the interface shear characteristics of UHPC-NC with U-shaped shear studs, the numerical model with 14 various parameters is calculated based on the interface push tests. The influences of diameter, stud number, NC elastic modulus, NC compressive strength on the shear characteristics of the UHPC-NC interface are analyzed. The results show that the load-slip curves of the UHPC-NC interface with a U-shaped shear stud have three stages: elastic stage, elastoplastic stage and descending stage. The fitting formula with the power function as the basic function can well express the influence law of diameter on the interface shear capacity. The interface shear capacity is not sensitive to the elastic modulus and compressive strength of NC, and it does not increase or decrease with the increase of stud number, the shear strength of a single stud tends to be constant. © 2023 Ernst & Sohn GmbH.
