Latency-sensitive multiparty applications involve intensive communication between multiple participating nodes. Relays are usually adopted for matchmaking end hosts, filtering unwanted traffics, bypassing routing outages and so on. Speeding up the relay-communication becomes increasingly important to improve the QoE of clients. Currently, no rigorous guarantees have been made for the latency-optimal relay communication. We propose a novel framework to truthfully represent the relay communication in the latency space. Real-world data sets show that nearly 90% of node triples obey the average triangle inequality, while our new model allows for the asymmetry and triangle inequality violations to occur. We propose the general triangle to rigorously locate a candidate relay closer to multiple nodes, with which we systematically analyze the feasibility of finding an optimal relay node for arbitrarily sized groups. Our results show that distributed greedy methods are able to locate optimal relays with modest communication overhead and small search hops.

Server consolidation is one of the critical techniques for energy-efficiency in cloud data centers. As it is often assumed that cloud service instances (e.g., Amazon EC2 instances) utilize the shared storage only, most existing work did not consider the problems introduced by utilizing local storage. In recent years, however, cloud service providers have been providing local storage for cloud users, e.g., Amazon EC2, Aliyun ECS and RDS, since local storage can offer a better performance with identified price. Thus, several problems might be incurred, e.g., migrating much more data, consuming much more migration time and network bandwidth. To address these problems, this paper proposes SaSercon, a storage-aware server consolidation approach to minimize the total migrated data size (stored on the local storage) by releasing the servers which utilize lower data size. Evaluation results on production traces demonstrate that SaSercon significantly reduces the total migrated data size.

Latency-aware DVFS for efficient power state transitions on many-core architectures

Energy efficiency is quickly becoming a first-class design constraint in high-performance computing (HPC). We need more efficient power management solutions to save energy costs and carbon footprint of HPC systems. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is a commonly used power management technique for making a trade-off between power consumption and system performance according to the time-varying program behavior. However, prior work on DVFS seldom takes into account the voltage and frequency scaling latencies, which we found to be a crucial factor determining the efficiency of the power management scheme. Frequent power state transitions without latency awareness can make a real impact on the execution performance of applications. The design of multiple voltage domains in some many-core architectures has made the effect of DVFS latencies even more significant. These concerns lead us to propose a new latency-aware DVFS scheme to adjust the optimal power state more accurately. Our main idea is to analyze the latency characteristics in depth and design a novel profile-guided DVFS solution which exploits the varying execution patterns of the parallel program to avoid excessive power state transitions. We implement the solution into a power management library for use by shared-memory parallel applications. Experimental evaluation on the Intel SCC many-core platform shows significant improvement in power efficiency after using our scheme. Compared with a latency-unaware approach, we achieve 24.0 % extra energy saving, 31.3 % more reduction in the energy-delay product and 15.2 % less overhead in execution time in the average case for various benchmarks. Our algorithm is also proved to outperform a prior DVFS approach attempted to mitigate the latency effects.

Polynomials are widely used in scientific computing and engineering. In this paper, we present an accurate and fast compensated algorithm to evaluate bivariate polynomials with floating-point coefficients. This algorithm is applying error free transformations to the bivariate Horner scheme and sum the final decomposition accurately. We also prove the proposed algorithm's accuracy with forward error analysis that the accuracy of the computed result is similar to the result computed by the bivariate Horner scheme in twice the working precision. Numerical experiments illustrate the behavior and it has higher efficiency than the bivariate Horner scheme implemented in double-double library.

Background: Drug repositioning, finding new indications for existing drugs, has gained much recent attention as a potentially efficient and economical strategy for accelerating new therapies into the clinic. Although improvement in the sensitivity of computational drug repositioning methods has identified numerous credible repositioning opportunities, few have been progressed. Arguably the "black box" nature of drug action in a new indication is one of the main blocks to progression, highlighting the need for methods that inform on the broader target mechanism in the disease context. Results: We demonstrate that the analysis of co-expressed genes may be a critical first step towards illumination of both disease pathology and mode of drug action. We achieve this using a novel framework, co-expressed gene-set enrichment analysis (cogena) for co-expression analysis of gene expression signatures and gene set enrichment analysis of co-expressed genes. The cogena framework enables simultaneous, pathway driven, disease and drug repositioning analysis. Cogena can be used to illuminate coordinated changes within disease transcriptomes and identify drugs acting mechanistically within this framework. We illustrate this using a psoriatic skin transcriptome, as an exemplar, and recover two widely used Psoriasis drugs (Methotrexate and Ciclosporin) with distinct modes of action. Cogena out-performs the results of Connectivity Map and NFFinder webservers in similar disease transcriptome analyses. Furthermore, we investigated the literature support for the other top-ranked compounds to treat psoriasis and showed how the outputs of cogena analysis can contribute new insight to support the progression of drugs into the clinic. Designing fast singular value decomposition (SVD) is significantly interesting in applications. The random direct SVD (RSVD) has provided a fast scheme to compute the well approximate SVD by unilateral randomized sampling. In this paper, we present an efficient random algorithm in a bilateral sampling way. We also prove that the proposed algorithms can be bounded well and have less computational complexity compared to RSVD when the objective matrix is approximately square. Numerical experiments on graph Laplacian and Hilbert matrix demonstrate the efficiency and stability of the proposed methods.

A full-duplex multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband over fiber (UWBoF) system is proposed, and bidirectional transmission of a 1.28-Gbps MB-OFDM UWB signal over 50-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is demonstrated. An optical remote heterodyning mixing scheme is employed to generate a 60-GHz optical millimeter wave. Meanwhile, an optical carrier without modulation data is extracted by using a fiber Bragg grating for the uplink MB-OFDM UWB signal transmission. After 50-km SSMF transmission at a bit error rate of 1 x 10(-4), the power penalties are 0.7 dB for a 4 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-uplink and 1.0 dB for a 16QAM-uplink, respectively. The proposed scheme would greatly reduce the cost and significantly improve the spectrum utilization efficiency in the full-duplex MB-OFDM UWBoF systems. To improve the transmission performance of multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) over optical fiber, a pre-coding scheme based on low-density parity-check (LDPC) is adopted and experimentally demonstrated in the intensity-modulation and direct-detection MB-OFDM UWB over fiber system. Meanwhile, a symbol synchronization and pilot-aided channel estimation scheme is implemented on the receiver of the MB-OFDM UWB over fiber system. The experimental results show that the LDPC pre-coding scheme can work effectively in the MB-OFDM UWB over fiber system. After 70 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission, at the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the receiver sensitivities are improved about 4 dB when the LDPC code rate is 75%. Regular expression matching is widely used in content-aware applications, such as NIDS and protocol identification. However, wire-speed processing for large scale patterns still remains a great challenge in practice. Considering low hit rates in NIDS, a compact and efficient pre-filter is firstly proposed to filter most normal traffics and leave few suspicious traffics for further pattern matching. Experiment results show that, the pre-filter achieves a big improvement in both space and time consumption with its compact and efficient structure.

Cloud storage has become one of the integral parts of online life. However, the cloud storage brings in new kinds of data security issues as well. Authentication framework for both users and services provides an efficient solution to the security and privacy problems of the cloud storage. In this paper we propose a Hierarchical Identity-Based Signature (HIBS) scheme using composite order bilinear groups. We present the methodology of dual system signature to prove that our scheme is secure against existential forgery on adaptively chosen message and identity attack under standard model. Our HIBS scheme shares the same system parameters with the hierarchical identity-based encryption (LW-HIBE) scheme by Lewko and Waters, and it is as efficient as the LW-HIBE. Combining our signature scheme with the LW-HIBE scheme yields a complete solution of an identity-based public key system, which can be utilized to build an authentication framework for cloud storage.
