EM-HyChem: Bridging molecular simulations and chemical reaction neural network-enabled approach to modelling energetic material chemistry

This study introduced a physics-inspired, top-down approach for modelling the reaction kinetics of energetic materials, based on observations of the time scale separation between pyrolysis and oxidation reactions. This modelling approach, named EM-HyChem, was developed with the inspiration of the original hybrid chemistry (HyChem) model, in which the reaction mechanism is divided into two submodels: pyrolysis and oxidation. In EM-HyChem, the key pyrolysis products and reaction mechanism are identified from the perspective of molecular fragments via geometry analysis, which is validated via neural network potential-enabled molecular dynamic simulations. A chemical reaction neural network (CRNN) model is applied to extract the rate parameters for the pyrolysis step from the reproduction of thermogravimetric experiments. An EM-HyChem model is later constructed by combining the pyrolysis step together with the oxidation models for the pyrolysis products. Two representative EMs, i.e., 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX), are considered here to evaluate the performance of the EM-HyChem model. The predicted burning rates across a wide range of pressure conditions (1-100 atm) are in good agreement with the experimental measurements and the results of other models. Further agreement among the temperature profile, melt layer thickness and surface temperatures support the EM-HyChem model.

A virtual reference trajectory scheme for tracking control of wheeled mobile robots with slip disturbances

The problem of trajectory tracking control for wheeled mobile robots with slip disturbances is investigated in this paper. A virtual reference trajectory scheme is proposed based on disturbance compensations. Different from the conventional design philosophy of adding disturbance compensations to the controller, the proposed scheme integrates slip disturbance estimates into the reference trajectory. The proposed scheme consists of two parts. First, the slip disturbance estimates and the reference trajectory are fused to generate a virtual reference trajectory, where the slip disturbances are estimated using a disturbance approximation method. Second, a controller is designed to enable the wheeled mobile robot's odometry position and yaw angle track the virtual reference trajectory, and then the actual position of the wheeled mobile robot track the position of the real reference trajectory. Comparison simulations and experiments are provided to illustrate the validity and advantages of the proposed scheme.

An Improved Bilevel Algorithm Based on Ant Colony Optimization and Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search for Routing and Charging Scheduling of Electric Vehicles

The past few decades have witnessed the boom of electric vehicles (EVs) techniques in response to their energy efficiency and reduction of the carbon footprint. However, limited cruising range and sparse charging infrastructure could restrain a massive deployment of EVs. To mitigate the problem, the need for routing and charging scheduling algorithms subject to minimization of time and economic costs emerged. The objective of this article is to propose an improved ant colony optimization (ACO) and adaptive large neighborhood search (ALNS)-based bilevel algorithm for the solvability of routing and charging scheduling problem of EVs. Specifically, in the first stage, the feasibility of EVs' journeys is enhanced through two procedures: ameliorating the computation method for individual ants' node selection probabilities and upgrading ACO's pheromone update strategy after each iteration. In the second stage, the initial solutions from the final solutions of latter procedure are updated using different destroy and repair operators to optimize heuristic solutions. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by comparisons with two other heuristic algorithms, and it is shown that the proposed algorithm provides better solution performance in terms of less time and economic costs based on the road network model of the Suzhou-Wuxi Highway Network.

Lagrange-dual-based fully distributed economic dispatch in smart grids with transmission line losses

Economic dispatch constitutes an important element within the hierarchical control framework of smart grids. Its effective implementation is imperative for cost reduction in generation, enhancement of operational efficiency, and power systems stability. This paper tackles the distributed economic dispatch problem in smart grids with transmission line losses. First, the economic dispatch problem is transformed into its Lagrange dual problem using convex optimization theory, accompanied by a description of the strategy for addressing inequality constraints. Then, a fully distributed optimization algorithm is developed under free initial state through the fusion of nonsmooth analysis and the primal-dual method. Furthermore, based on this algorithm, a modified algorithm with lower communication overhead is presented. Finally, software simulations and hardware-in-the-loop tests are performed to verify the developed scheme.

Study on Characteristics of Aeolian Vibration of Conductor Lines Considering Coupling Between Conductor Motion and Vortex Excitation

Aeolian vibration of conductor lines is a fluid-structure coupling problem involving vortex excitation and conductor motion, however, few studies consider this coupling in their analyses. In this study, a nonlinear finite element (FE) method for aeolian vibration of the conductor line, in which the conductor line is discretized with three-dimensional (3D) beam elements and the coupling between the conductor motion and the vortex excitation is considered, is proposed. The fluctuating lift on the conductor induced by the oscillating wake vortex is presented by the van der Pol oscillator. The aerodynamic forces depending on the conductor's moving state are determined by the van der Pol equation and applied to the conductor using a user-defined element (UEL) subroutine in ABAQUS. The numerical model is validated through a comparison of its results with field observation. By means of this validated numerical method, the aeolian vibrations of conductor lines are numerically simulated. The lock-in phenomenon is successfully reflected using the numerical method. Additionally, some important characteristics, such as the displacement response, phase difference between the lift and vertical displacement as well as the relation between the antinode amplitude and excitation frequency of aeolian vibration are analyzed. The necessity of taking into account the coupling between the conductor motion and the vortex excitation in the study of aeolian vibration is also analyzed. The maximum vibration amplitude obtained by the model without this coupling is approximately 20% of that obtained by the model with the coupling. This study provides valuable references for the design of transmission lines, as well as for the assessment and prevention of aeolian vibration in conductor lines.

Stretch Effects in Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Premixed Bunsen Flames

The stretch effects in large eddy simulation (LES) of a turbulent lean propane-air premixed Bunsen flame in the wrinkled flamelet regime are investigated. A simple approach to model the subgrid-scale flame stretch is proposed. It is based on the analysis which shows that, when the surface-filtered strain rate in a subgrid-scale stretch model is approximated using the volume-filtered velocity field solved for in LES, heat release and associated gas expansion in the filtered flame brush tend to artificially alter the wrinkling of resolved flame fronts. To minimize such artifacts, it is suggested that the volume-filtered strain rate on the unburned side of the filtered flame brush be used to approximate the surface-filtered strain rate and projected through the filtered flame brush. The results show the importance of mitigating the artificial heat release effects when considering the strain effects in LES. The relative importance of the curvature stretch is also investigated in terms of the mean and local effects. For a Bunsen flame with a positive Markstein number, the mean flame curvature effect tends to increase the total burning rate by enhancing the laminar flame speed near the flame tip, while the local flame curvature effect tends to decrease the total burning rate by suppressing the wrinkling of the resolved flames. It is found that the competition between the two makes the overall curvature effects not influence the total burning rate much for the flame investigated here, as compared with the strain effects.

Receptivity of a supersonic two-dimensional jet due to acoustic excitations near the nozzle lip

In this paper, we develop an analytical model to investigate the generation of instability waves triggered by the upstream acoustic forcing near the nozzle lip of a supersonic jet. This represents an important stage, i.e. the jet receptivity, of the screech feedback loop. The upstream acoustic forcing, resulting from the shock-instability interaction (SII), reaches the nozzle lip and excites new shear-layer instability waves. To obtain the newly excited instability wave, we first determine the scattered sound field due to the upstream forcing using the Wiener-Hopf technique, with the kernel function factored using asymptotic expansions and overlapping approximations. Subsequently, the unsteady Kutta condition is imposed at the nozzle lip, enabling the derivation of the dispersion relation for the newly excited instability wave. A linear transfer function between the upstream forcing and the newly excited instability wave is obtained. We calculate the amplitude and phase delay in this receptivity process and examine their variations against the frequency. The analytically obtained phase delay enables us to evaluate the phase condition for jet screech and predict the screech frequency accordingly. The results show improved agreement with the experimental data compared with classical models. It is hoped that this model may help in developing a full screech model.

C4Net: Excavating Cross-Modal Context- and Content-Complementarity for RGB-T Semantic Segmentation

The complementary properties exhibited upon RGB-T data involve context complementarity as well as content complementarity. During cross-modal feature fusion, most existing RGB-T semantic segmentation methods are dedicated to highlighting the exploitation of content-complementary information. Unfortunately, these methods usually overlook the excavation of cross-modal context-complementary information (i.e., the contextual dependencies among different regions that only exist in one certain modality data) or try to exploit such cross-modal context-complementary information in an implicit way, yielding fragmentary semantic segmentation results. To remedy this problem, in this paper, a novel Cross-modal Context- and Content-Complementarity Network (C4Net) is presented for RGB-T semantic segmentation, in which both the cross-modal context-complementary information and the cross-modal content-complementary information are fully excavated and exploited during cross-modal feature fusion. Specifically, a Context-Complementary Information Aggregation (CxCIA) module is carefully designed, in which the cross-modal context-complementary information is explicitly excavated by measuring the discrepancies between contextual dependencies from different modality data. Then, such cross-modal context-complementary information is further exploited to enhance the original RGB and thermal contextual dependencies for boosting the integrity of objects in the fused features. In the meantime, a Content-Complementary Information Aggregation (CnCIA) module is presented, which highlights the utilization of cross-modal content-complementary information from a multi-scale perspective. Furthermore, an MLP-based Multi-level Feature Interaction (MFI) decoder is presented, in which the semantic gaps among different levels of fused features are mitigated by establishing the interactions of multi-level fused features along spatial and channel dimensions. SWIPT-Enabled Full-Duplex Short Packet Communications With Nonlinear Energy Harvesting

In this work, we examine a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT)-enabled full-duplex (FD) short packet communication system in which both users are equipped with a pair of transmitter-receiver antennas and can transmit and receive simultaneously. Specifically, an energy-constrained user employs the power splitting protocol to harvest the energy of radio frequency signals transmitted by another user. To assess the reliable performance of the system, we consider two practical situations, that is, independent uplink and downlink, as well as identical uplink and downlink. For both scenarios, we derive closed-form approximations for the overall block error rate (BLER), taking into account the influence of finite blocklength codes and nonlinear energy harvesting model. Subsequently, we analyze the effective throughput to characterize the efficiency of the considered system. Our simulation and numerical results confirm the accuracy of the theoretical approximations and demonstrate that there exists an optimal transmit power to minimize the overall BLER.

zkRPC: Trustless Bitcoin data availability network

The escalating size of data in the Bitcoin blockchain poses significant challenges in terms of block verification and storage efficiency, characterized as data availability issues. zkRPC is developed to address these challenges by leveraging a decentralized architecture and zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to ensure data integrity and availability while minimizing the requirement of storage. The implementation of zkRPC involves distributing the blockchain data among nodes, where each node stores only a portion of the data but can verify the entirety using ZKPs. Theoretical analyses and practical evaluations of zkRPC demonstrate its effectiveness in reducing storage requirements while maintaining fast and reliable data verification across the network. Our approach not only enhances the scalability of Bitcoin but also improves the storage performance. Overall, zkRPC is shown as a suitable solution for trustless Bitcoin data availability.
