Variability in the morphologic assessment of human sperm: use of the strict criteria recommended by the World Health Organization in 2010

Objective: To determine the variability in the recognition of normal sperm and various sperm defects using the strict criteria recommended by the World Health Organization (5th edition, 2010). Design: Sperm morphologic assessment by three experienced evaluators. Setting: image processing laboratory and reproduction research institute. Patient(s): Semen donors from a sperm bank. Intervention(s): The morphology of 5,296 sperm was evaluated using statistical analyses of variability. Main Outcome Measure(s): The proportion and coefficients of variation (CVs) of normal sperm, defects of specific parts, and the categories of defects were measured. The degree of agreement between any two of the three evaluators was calculated. The multiple anomalies index, teratozoospermia index, sperm deformity index, and the CVs were also measured. Result(s): The CVs of normal sperm, multiple anomalies index, teratozoospermia index, and sperm deformity index were 4.80%, 4.14%, 5.75%, and 6.81%, respectively. A broader range (4.80%-132.97%) of CVs was observed for the recognition of various defects. The coefficients of the degree of agreement concerning specific morphologic parts of sperm varied (0.387-0.607), with lower relative values for the head and mid-piece than for the tail and cytoplasm. Conclusion(s): The sperm head is more difficult to evaluate than the other parts using the criteria recommended by the World Health Organization in 2010. The degree of agreement concerning specific parts and various defects varied in broad ranges. A stricter definition for each defect is needed. (C) 2014 by American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

The mechanisms that underlie fascinating inter-individual interactions among animal groups have attracted increasing attention from biologists, physicists, and system scientists. There are two well-known types of interaction patterns: hierarchical and egalitarian. In the former type, individuals follow their leaders, whereas they follow their neighbors in the latter. Using high-resolution spatiotemporal data derived from the free flights of a flock of pigeons, we show that pigeon flocks actually adopt a mode that switches between the two aforementioned strategies. To determine its flight direction, each pigeon tends to follow the average of its neighbors while moving along a smooth trajectory, whereas it switches to follow its leaders when sudden turns or zigzags occur. By contrast, when deciding how fast to fly, each pigeon synthesizes the average velocity of its neighbors. This switching mechanism is promising for possible industrial applications in multi-robot system coordination, unmanned vehicle formation control, and other areas.

An improved column generation algorithm for crew scheduling problems

Column Generation (CG) technique is popularly applied in solving the crew scheduling problem of large size, which is generally modeled as an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) problem. The traditional CG algorithms for bus and rail crew scheduling encounter difficulties on either the generation of all potential shifts or solving subproblems. A subproblem embedded in the CG is generally represented as a Resource-constrained Shortest Path Problem (RCSPP), which is NP-hard and constitutes a major reason for the CG's slow convergence. This paper presents a novel CG strategy to improve the efficiency of the proposed crew scheduling approach. The main idea is that a reasonably large set of "good" potential shifts (called a shift-pool) is pre-compiled using problem-specific knowledge. During the CG process, the RCSPP is not constructed to generate potential shifts as new columns until no columns with Negative Reduced Cost (NRC) exist in the shift-pool. Experiments are carried out on a series of Chinese real-world problem instances, and the computational results show that the solving process is significantly accelerated. © 2013 by Binary Information Press.

This paper proposes a generalized regression neural networks (GRNNS) with K-fold cross-validation (GRNNSK) for predicting the displacement of landslide. Furthermore, correlation analysis is a fundamental analysis to find the potential input variables for a forecast model. Pearson cross-correlation coefficients (PCC) and mutual information (MI) are applied in the paper. Test on the case study of Liangshuijing (LSJ) landslide in the Three Gorges reservoir in China demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Besides storage information, memristor can also be used in logic operation. Although IMPLY and CLEAR based on memristor are logic completeness, there would be more steps when representing AND and OR operation which are more commonly used. Based on this, the paper presents a feasible approach to implement OR logic, and implements OR logic in NOR memory array based on memristors. Utilizing the advantage of parallel computing, NOR memory array based on memristors can greatly improve the speed of logic operation, and offering a new method for the combination of storage and operation.

In this paper, we propose an Activity-List based Nested Partitions algorithm for solving the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem(RCPSP). This algorithm is based on traditional Serial Scheduling scheme (SSS) and partitions the feasible solution space which is formulated by activity-lists into subregions by the nested partitions approach. We also utilize Double Justification as local search to improve the solutions. The algorithm is tested on J120 in PSPLIB with the result that the algorithm is relatively effective for solving large-scale, complex RCPSPs.

Membrane algorithms are a new class of parallel algorithms, which attempt to incorporate some components of membrane computing models for designing efficient optimization algorithms, such as the structure of the models and the way of communication between cells. Although the importance of the parallelism of such algorithms has been well recognized, membrane algorithms were usually implemented on the serial computing device central processing unit (CPU), which makes the algorithms unable to work in an efficient way. In this work, we consider the implementation of membrane algorithms on the parallel computing device graphics processing unit (GPU). In such implementation, all cells of membrane algorithms can work simultaneously. Experimental results on two classical intractable problems, the point set matching problem and TSP, show that the GPU implementation of membrane algorithms is much more efficient than CPU implementation in terms of runtime, especially for solving problems with a high complexity.

Mean-risk analysis of radio frequency identification technology in supply chain with inventory misplacement: Risk-sharing and coordination

This paper investigates the application of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to eliminate the misplacement problems in the supply chain, which consists of a risk-neutral manufacturer and a risk-averse retailer. By considering both fixed cost and tag cost of RFID implementation, we study the agents' incentives to adopt RFID in both uncoordinated and coordinated cases. We focus on analyzing the impact of risk attitudes on the agents’ incentives and on the supply chain coordination. The central semi-deviation is adopted to measure the retailer's risk attitude. In the uncoordinated case, we find that, in order to induce the retailer to adopt RFID, the manufacturer must assume more fixed cost if the retailer is more risk-averse. In the coordinated case, we first show that the standard revenue sharing contract does not always coordinate the channel. If the channel is coordinated, we observe that the agents’ incentives will be perfectly aligned and independent of the risk attitudes, if the revenue sharing ratio equals the fixed cost sharing ratio. Then we propose a risk-sharing contract that offers the risk protection to the retailer, to achieve the channel coordination. An interesting finding is that the manufacturer's incentive will not decrease with the tag cost, if she takes much risk from the retailer. The corresponding impacts of RFID adoption on the two contracts are also analyzed in this paper. Finally, a case study in a tobacco industry is presented to show the real RFID cost in practice.

Inspired by the indoor localization technology of mobile robots, a novel Electronic Travel Aids (ETA) is developed based on multi-sensor fusion using an extended Kalman filter (EKF). A wearable sensor system is designed to estimate the real-time posture of user's lower limb. This system can be used both for monitoring the user's walking status and for realizing the relative localization. A belt of multiple sonar sensors worn by the user can detect the obstacle of unknown environment. Simultaneously, this sonar belt can also be used as the absolute localization device in a similar way as the mobile robot. An EKF is applied to realize the data fusion of different sensor systems. The abilities of obstacle avoidance and indoor localization of the proposed ETA are both verified through experiments.
