For stand-alone solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems, delivering demanded power, maintaining system operating constraints, and achieving high system efficiency are the primary design objectives. We consider a novel SOFC design that includes an air bypass valve to achieve greater controllability. Through model-based analysis, the steady-state system performance is investigated. And the optimal operating points (OOPs) for different loads are explored to achieve the high system efficiency. The effects of bypass valve are quantified. The analysis demonstrates that the design is feasible and the bypass valve can play a substantial role on improving the overall system performance and operationability.

This paper investigates distributed leader-following swarm stability of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with periodically intermittent control. We assume that the agents in the network are nonidentical and the coupling matrix is balanced. Each heterogeneous follower is assumed to obtain some information from the leader and the neighbors only on a series of periodically time intervals. We show that the system will be exponentially stable. The stability properties are proved via theoretical analysis and verified via numerical simulations. The stability of the heterogeneous multi-agent systems is proved based on matrix theory and the Lyapunov stability theorem. A numerical example is shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical result.

Safety risk analysis and assessment of high-risk work system in hydroelectric project has an important role in safety management. The interactive relationships between human factors and the importance of factors are analyzed and proposed. We analyze the correlation relationship among the factors by using statistical method, which is more objective than subjective judgment. The HFACS is provided to establish a rational and an applicable index system for investigating human error in accidents;the structural equation modeling (SEM) and accident data are used to construct system model and acquire the path coefficient among the risk factor variables;the ANP model is built to assess the importance of accident factors. 289 pieces of valid questionnaires data are analyzed to obtain the path coefficient between risk factor variables and to build the ANP model's judgment matrix. Finally, the human factors' weights are calculated by ANP model. Combining SEM's results and factor's frequency analysis and building the ANP model, the results show that the four greatest weight values of the factors are, respectively, "personal readiness," "perception and decision errors," "skill-based errors," and "violation operations." The results of ANP model provide a reference for the engineering and construction management.

Predicting pathologic tumor response to chemoradiotherapy with histogram distances characterizing longitudinal changes in ¹⁸F-FDG uptake patterns

Purpose: A family of fluorine-18 (F-18)-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18-FDG) positron-emission tomography (PET) features based on histogram distances is proposed for predicting pathologic tumor response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT). These features describe the longitudinal change of FDG uptake distribution within a tumor. Methods: Twenty patients with esophageal cancer treated with CRT plus surgery were included in this study. All patients underwent PET/CT scans before (pre-) and after (post-) CRT. The two scans were first rigidly registered, and the original tumor sites were then manually delineated on the pre-PET/CT by an experienced nuclear medicine physician. Two histograms representing the FDG uptake distribution were extracted from the pre- and the registered post-PET images, respectively, both within the delineated tumor. Distances between the two histograms quantify longitudinal changes in FDG uptake distribution resulting from CRT, and thus are potential predictors of tumor response. A total of 19 histogram distances were examined and compared to both traditional PET response measures and Haralick texture features. Receiver operating characteristic analyses and Mann-Whitney U test were performed to assess their predictive ability. Results: Among all tested histogram distances, seven bin-to-bin and seven crossbin distances outperformed traditional PET response measures using maximum standardized uptake value (AUC = 0.70) or total lesion glycolysis (AUC = 0.80). The seven bin-to-bin distances were: L-2 distance (AUC = 0.84), chi(2) distance (AUC = 0.83), intersection distance (AUC = 0.82), cosine distance (AUC = 0.83), squared Euclidean distance (AUC = 0.83), L-1 distance (AUC = 0.82), and Jeffrey distance (AUC = 0.82). Pattern classification of dermoscopy images: A perceptually uniform model

Pattern classification of dermoscopy images is a challenging task of differentiating between benign melanocytic lesions and melanomas. In this paper, a novel pattern classification method based on color symmetry and multiscale texture analysis is developed to assist dermatologists' diagnosis. Our method aims to classify various tumor patterns using color-texture properties extracted in a perceptually uniform color space. In order to design an optimal classifier and to address the problem of multicomponent patterns, an adaptive boosting multi-label learning algorithm (***) is developed. Finally, the class label set of the test pattern is determined by fusing the results produced by boosting based on the maximum a posteriori (MAP) and robust ranking principles. The proposed discrimination model for multi-label learning algorithm is fully automatic and obtains higher accuracy compared to existing multi-label classification methods. Our classification model obtains a sensitivity (SE) of 89.28%, specificity (SP) of 93.75% and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.986. The results demonstrate that our pattern classifier based on color-texture features agrees with dermatologists' perception. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spiking neural P systems (SN P systems, for short) are a class of distributed parallel computing devices inspired from the way neurons communicate by means of spikes. Recently, a variant of SN P systems was considered: at each step the neuron with the minimum number of spikes among the neurons that can spike will fire. In previous literature, it was obtained that such systems can achieve Turing completeness when the computing result is realized through accumulation of spikes in the output neuron. In this work, we use a natural way to define the computing result of the systems, by means of determining the time interval between the first two spikes emitted by the output neuron. As devices of computing functions, we construct a universal sequential SN P system based on minimum spike number (without delay) by using 137 neurons;as generators of sets of numbers, a universal sequential SN P system based on minimum spike number (without delay) with 126 neurons is also obtained.

The impact of stock-dependent demand on supply chain dynamics

This paper presents an investigation on the dynamics of a supply chain system under stock-dependent demand. Considering the feature of piecewise linearity, a switched linear model composed of three subsystems is developed. Based on the switched model, some analytical stability results are derived. Simulation experiments are designed to verify the stability results and observe nonlinear dynamics. We show that stock-dependent demand not only leads to different stability results but also makes nonlinear dynamics more complicated. We also reveal that the nonlinear dynamics of the switched model, such as chaotic and periodic fluctuations of inventory and order, are essentially caused by switching frequently among subsystems due to uncertainties of inventory status. The results obtained in this paper help us understand the dynamic complexities of supply chain system and provide guidelines for selecting decision parameters to improve overall performance.

The time series of landslide displacement reflects the evolution of landslide, and is monotonously increasing and nonlinear. With ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) methods the monitored displacement series is decomposed into relatively simple components, then BP neural network was applied to forecasting the evolution of each component, and the individual predictions were summed to get the final result of prediction. 3-dimensional modeling software is adopted to plot the 3-dimensional terrain model of the monitored areas, based on the data collected from these areas. Finally, with the combination of mathematical models for landslide prediction and 3-d terrain model, the visual simulation of landslide evolution is realized in visualizing software.
