Skin tumor area extraction using an improved dynamic programming approach

Background/purpose: Border (B) description of melanoma and other pigmented skin lesions is one of the most important tasks for the clinical diagnosis of dermoscopy images using the ABCD rule. For an accurate description of the border, there must be an effective skin tumor area extraction (STAE) method. However, this task is complicated due to uneven illumination, artifacts present in the lesions and smooth areas or fuzzy borders of the desired regions. Methods: In this paper, a novel STAE algorithm based on improved dynamic programming (IDP) is presented. The STAE technique consists of the following four steps: color space transform, pre-processing, rough tumor area detection and refinement of the segmented area. The procedure is performed in the CIE L*a*b* color space, which is approximately uniform and is therefore related to dermatologist's perception. After pre-processing the skin lesions to reduce artifacts, the DP algorithm is improved by introducing a local cost function, which is based on color and texture weights. Results: The STAE method is tested on a total of 100 dermoscopic images. In order to compare the performance of STAE with other state-of-the-art algorithms, various statistical measures based on dermatologist-drawn borders are utilized as a ground truth. The proposed method outperforms the others with a sensitivity of 96.64%, a specificity of 98.14% and an error probability of 5.23%. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that this STAE method by IDP is an effective solution when compared with other state-of-the-art segmentation techniques. The proposed method can accurately extract tumor borders in dermoscopy images.

Lesion segmentation plays an important role in medical image processing and analysis. There exist several successful dynamic programming (DP) based segmentation methods for general images. In those methods, the gradient is used as an important factor in the cost function to attract the contours to the boundaries. Since medical images have their characteristics such as low contrast, blurred edges and high noises, the gradient operator cannot work well enough to achieve a satisfactory performance for boundary detection. We define the local intra-class variance and combine it with the dynamic programming method to replace the traditional gradient operation. Experiments on synthetic and X-ray images are carried out and the results are compared with Canny and fast multilevel fuzzy edge detection (FMFED) algorithms. It is demonstrated that the proposed method performs better on medical images with low contrast, blurred edges and high noises. In addition, 483 regions of interest of mammograms randomly extracted from DDSM of the University of South Florida are used to compare our proposed method with the plane-fitting and dynamic programming method (PFDP), and the normalized cut segmentation method (Ncut). The results demonstrate that our method is more accurate and robust than PFDP and Ncut. © 2012 ACM.

This paper aims to design a system that can measure AC sample magnetization employing a pair of differentiating detection coils. A pair of Helmholtz coils generated the applied magnetic field. A new model and a pair of differentiating coils were used to reject the intrinsic residual of the applied magnetic field, which was caused by the mechanical positioning error of detection coils. The system design is very simple, low-cost, and easy to implement with only two parts: hardware and software. The experimental results indicated that the rejection of the applied magnetic field with a residual is about 0.05%, relative to the sample magnetization.

In this paper, we propose a new method for remote sensing image pan-sharpening which is based on weighted red-black (WRB) wavelet and adaptive principal component analysis (PCA), where the adaptive PCA is used to reduce spectral distortions and the utilization of WRB wavelet is used to extract the spatial details in PAN images. To reduce the artifacts and spectral distortions in the pan-sharpened images, which were caused by the local instabilities and dissimilarities in the PAN and MS images, a local process strategy incorporating detail enhancement is introduced. The proposed method is tested on two datasets both acquired by QuickBird and compared with the existing methods. Experimental results show that our method can provide promising fused MS images at a high spatial resolution.

In this paper we propose a watermarking based two-stage authentication framework to enhance biometric system security. The face feature of one individual is embedded into his/her fingerprint image as credibility token. During authentication, the watermark is first extracted to establish data authenticity. If legitimate, the face pattern can further serve as supplemental trait in biometric authentication progress. A wavelet quantization based watermarking method is proposed to robustly embed information in fingerprints while preserving their discriminating features. Meanwhile, a sparse representation based classifier is adopted to efficiently exploit the identity information within face watermarks. Experimental results which evaluate both watermarking and biometric authentication performance demonstrate the effectiveness of this work.

Clinical research indicates that the epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) has shown potential in promoting locomotor recovery in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (ISCI). This paper presents the development of a fully implantable voltage-regulated stimulator with bi-directional wireless communication for investigating underlying neural mechanisms of ESCS facilitating motor function improvement. The stimulation system consists of a computer, an external controller, an implantable pulse generator (IPG), a magnet, the extension leads and a stimulation electrode. The telemetry transmission between the IPG and the external controller is achieved by a commercially available transceiver chip with 2.4 GHz carrier band. The magnet is used to activate the IPG only when necessary to minimize the power consumption. The encapsulated IPG measures 33 mm x 24 mm x 8 mm, with a total mass of similar to 12.6 g. Feasibility experiments are conducted in three Sprague-Dawley rats to validate the function of the stimulator, and to investigate the relationship between lumbar-sacral ESCS and hindlimb electromyography (EMG) responses. The results show that the stimulation system provides an effective tool for investigation of ESCS application in motor function recovery in small animals. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fast weighted K-view-voting algorithm for image texture classification

We propose an innovative and efficient approach to improve K-view-template (K-view-T) and K-view-datagram (K-view-D) algorithms for image texture classification. The proposed approach, called the weighted K-view-voting algorithm (K-view-V), uses a novel voting method for texture classification and an accelerating method based on the efficient summed square image (SSI) scheme as well as fast Fourier transform (FFT) to enable overall faster processing. Decision making, which assigns a pixel to a texture class, occurs by using our weighted voting method among the "promising" members in the neighborhood of a classified pixel. In other words, this neighborhood consists of all the views, and each view has a classified pixel in its territory. Experimental results on benchmark images, which are randomly taken from Brodatz Gallery and natural and medical images, show that this new classification algorithm gives higher classification accuracy than existing K-view algorithms. In particular, it improves the accurate classification of pixels near the texture boundary. In addition, the proposed acceleration method improves the processing speed of K-view-V as it requires much less computation time than other K-view algorithms. Compared with the results of earlier developed K-view algorithms and the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), the proposed algorithm is more robust, faster, and more accurate. The analytical algorithm of program quaternion is studied, aiming at the problem of the arbitrary space vehicle attitude-adjusting control. The analytical constructor method of the program quaternion is provided for arbitrary given initial quaternion, initial angle velocity, terminal quaternion and terminal angle velocity. The presented method has advantages as: good adaptability, the initial and terminal conditions are both arbitrary;reduced operation, the calculation process involves the fundamental algebraic operation;direct optimization, the time consumption in the process of space vehicle attitude adjustment and the maximum angular velocity can be optimized directly by using the program quaternion model. Finally, according to the simulation results, the program quaternion tracking can be realized by a PD control law. © 2012 Binary Information Press.

In this paper, by utilizing Linear Fractional Transformation (LFT) techniques, an iterative realization procedure resulting in multidimensional ( n -D) Roesser state-space model is proposed. The philosophy employed here is to achieve an overall n -D realization by realizing relatively lower-dimensional systems with respect to (w.r.t.) less-number of variables iteratively. Symbolic examples are presented to illustrate the basic idea as well as the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.
