In a biological system, if a long enough time interval is given, an enabled chemical reaction will finish its reaction in the given time interval. With this motivation, it is natural to impose a bound on the time interval when an enabled spiking rule in a spiking neural P system (SN P system, for short) remains unused. In this work, a new working mode of SN P systems is defined, which is called limited asynchronous mode. In an SN P system working in limited asynchronous mode, if a rule is enabled at some step, this rule is not obligatorily used. From this step on, if the unused rule may be used later, it should be used in the given time interval. If further spikes make the rule non-applicable, then the computation continues in the new circumstances. The computation result of a computation in an SN P system working in limited asynchronous mode is defined as the total number of spikes sent into the environment by the system. It is proved that limited asynchronous SN P systems with standard spiking rules are universal. If the number of spikes present in each neuron of a limited asynchronous SN P system with standard spiking rules is bounded during a computation, then the power of a limited asynchronous SN P system with standard spiking rules falls drastically, and we get a characterization of semilinear sets of numbers.

This paper is devoted to investigating inventory control problems under nonstationary and uncertain demand. A belief-rule-based inventory control (BRB-IC) method is developed, which can be applied in situations where demand and demand-forecast-error (DFE) do not follow certain stochastic distribution and forecasting demand is given in single-point or interval styles. The method can assist decision-making through a belief-rule structure that can be constructed, initialized and adjusted using both manager's knowledge and operational data. An extended optimal base stock (EOBS) policy is proved for initializing the belief-rule-base (BRB), and a BRB-IC inference approach with interval inputs is proposed. A numerical example and a case study are examined to demonstrate potential applications of the BRB-IC method. These studies show that the belief-rule-based expert system is flexible and valid for inventory control. The case study also shows that the BRB-IC method can compensate LIFE by training BRB using historical demand data for generating reliable ordering policy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this Letter, we analyze the dynamic behaviors for a class of memristor-based Hopfield networks. Some sufficient conditions are obtained which ensure the essential bound of solutions and global exponential stability of memristor-based Hopfield networks by using analysis approaches, and the criteria act as significant values for qualitative analysis of memristor-based Hopfield networks. Finally, a numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of our results. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrical coupling in a 5-cell solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack is investigated in this research. The electrical characteristics tests of a single cell and the stack were performed in an electrical furnace. It was found that the single cell with the highest temperature does not give the highest output voltage in the stack test, which is different from the result that the output voltage increases with temperature in the single cell test. A physical interpretation for this phenomenon is given specifically from the standpoint of electrical coupling on the basis of thermal coupling between cells in the stack. Furthermore, a system level electrical coupling dynamic model is developed to characterize the electrical characteristics of the stack by considering the contact resistance between cells. In addition, the electrical coupling dynamic model is calibrated and validated based on the experimental data. The results demonstrate that the electrical coupling dynamic model can depict and predict accurately the electrical characteristics of SOFC stacks. The accurate electrical coupling dynamic model is important for the system level study of SOFCs, such as the optimization of stack structures and the design of peripheral control systems.
