This paper gives an overview of three different geometric active contour models with the focus on the application to carotid plaque detection from cross-sectional ultrasound images of the carotid artery. On one hand, basic principles of these geometric active contour models are presented. On the other hand, performance of these models are tested on 16 images and compared with the manual delineations.

Traditional image matching algorithm based on gray correlation provides accurate results but it is time-consuming because of large amount of calculation. An improved gray correlation based image matching algorithm based on multi-core DSP is proposed to speed up the matching velocity with the acceptable margin of errors. With the development of portable embedded image processer, especially the multi-core DSPs for parallel computing to speed up the process, these image matching algorithms need to be transplanted to these embedded system. Experiments based on CPU in the form of Visual C++6.0 application program and multi-core Digital Signal Processor(DSP) verify the effectiveness of the algorithm, making it applicable to embedded imageprocessing system with a multi-core DSP.

This paper presents an algorithm to find the shortest path in 3D(three-dimensional) prostate surgery planning. Using a simplified delay pulse coupled neural network(S-DPCNN) model, a shortest path can be drawn automatically from the target position to the puncture point. Compared to the traditional pulse coupled neural network(PCNN), S-DPCNN needs much fewer neurons and therefore decreases complexity of computation. Experiments on computer simulations show the validity of this method.

A three dimensional transrectal ultrasound imaging system has been developed. The proposed system is aimed at monitoring for the prostate and providing three-dimensional ultrasound image for prostate biopsy and therapy. The device contains mechanical device and control circuit for the rotation of the probe. In addition, a two dimensional ultrasound machine for 2D ultrasound imaging is used and the software system for the reconstruction of three-dimensional ultrasound image based on PC is developed. Experiments are performed in phantom to validate our prototype. The 3D scan of the agar phantom produces minimal geometric distortion. In the future, our system will be tested on patients.

Epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) combined with partial weight bearing therapy (PWBT) has been reported to facilitate recovery of functional walking for individuals after chronic incomplete spinal cord injury. This paper describes a low cost, fully implantable, advanced ESCS stimulator that can be manufactured in a research laboratory for use in small animals. The system is composed of four main parts: an external personal digital assistant (PDA), an external controller, an implantable pulse generator (IPG), lead extension and electrode. The PDA allows the experimenter to program the stimulation parameters through a user-friendly graphical interface. The external controller placed on the rat back communicates with PDA via RF telemetry. The IPG generates the biphasic charge-balanced voltage-regulated pulses, which are delivered to the bipolar electrode by the lead extension to achieve chronic ESCS in freely moving rats. A RF carrier from the Class-E amplifier in the external controller provides both data and power for the implanted circuitry through a closely coupled inductive link. The IPG is hermetically packaged using a silicon elastomer and measures 22mm×23mm×7mm with a mass of ~3.78g.

Fuzzy enhancement is applied in computer aided diagnosis of liver cancer from B mode ultrasound images as a pre-processing procedure in this paper. It was evaluated with three classifiers including K means, back propagation neural network and support vector machine using 25 features from first order statistic (FOS), gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), gray-level run-length matrix (GLRLM), Grey level dependant matrix (GLDM) and LAWS. In the analysis of 166 normal liver tissue, 30 hemangioma and 60 malignant tumor, our method improved the classification accuracy of three classifiers (K means, BP neural network and support machine vector) in distinguishing liver cancer, hemangioma and normal liver cancer from B mode ultrasound images. It is proved that fuzzy enhancement as an efficient preprocessing procedure could be used in the computer aided diagnosis system of liver cancer.

This paper is concerned with the stabilization problem of discrete-time networked control systems with partly known transmission delay. Considering the random property of the networked-induced delay, the original system is transformed into a new delay model with stochastic parameter matrices by introducing a novel state augmentation technique. Based on the new model, a new delay-distribution-dependent criterion for the mean square stability of the closed-loop system is derived by using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach and linear matrix inequality technique. The solvability of the derived criterion depends on not only the size of the delay, but also the probability distribution of the delay taking value in a finite set. Finally, two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Based on the current development of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) in Enterprise Information System (EIS), the paper proposes a DMDA, a new development architecture to improve EIS development speed and quality. The basic idea of the DMDA is to take advantage of formal description, decomposition and re-use on EIS development process to let computer understand development demands of developers and then consequently generate some business models having nothing to do with specific technical realization, combine with specific technical basic platform to finally generate the EIS meeting actual demands based on data model. The practice proves the architecture is capable of simplifying EIS development difficulty, expediting application and development speed, improve development quality and achieve the rapid development purpose.

Although time of flight (TOF) cameras are becoming more popular, their low spatial resolution limits their usefulness. In this paper, we propose two new super-resolution methods to improve the resolution of depth maps generated by TOF cameras. One is based on the Lucas Kanade (LK) optical flow algorithm, and another is based on the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm. The results show that the proposed LK optical flow based method is more accurate and efficient in improving the spatial and depth resolution of depth maps than the proposed SIFT based method. It is more useful for real-time processing of depth images.
