Comparison between the effects of protective layers on domino effect risk caused by fragments

Based on the plasticity theory, the domino effect risk caused by fragments was investigated in consideration of the three types of protective layers: the PVC resin, MPA, and IPBT. The effects of the risk reduction were explored and compared by using the Monte-Carlo simulations. The results show that the rupture probability of the impacted target, the average penetration depth to the target, and the risk of domino effects decreased, while the average penetration depth to protective layer and the rupture probability of impacted protective layer increased, respectively from PVC resin, MPA, to IPBT;Moreover, the greater thickness of the protective layer also could reduce the risk of domino effect. The better practice is the use of the material of the protective layer with larger strength and smaller ultimate strain to reduce the possibility of the domino effect initiated by fragments. The larger the strength of material is, and the smaller the ultimate strain is, the higher resistant to the fragment penetration the material has.

Chemical process equipment and the damage phenomenon were categorized. Data were collected and unnecessary overpressure values together with the corresponding damage phenomenon in which the domino effect did not appear were deleted. The entire range of damage probability was divided into three categories according to degree of damage, by two segmentation points of random variables, and the model of damage probability following a uniform distribution in each degree of damage was proposed, in order to establish more detailed and realistic probit models. The influence of the two random separation points on the mean square errors was investigated and the average of the errors was regarded as the criterion for integral accuracy of the created models. The results showed that the mean square errors of different equipment and their average decreased according to the smaller separation point, and decreased initially and then increased with the larger separation point. The prediction model with high reliability was obtained by data fitting to calculate the average of the mean square errors, which reached a minimum when the values of both break points were 0.3363. These probit models of the four equipment categories with lower mean square errors and better consistency between predicted and observed data were proposed after correcting the few and unnecessary observed data used in curve regression and oversimplification in the probability arrangement in a previous study. The threshold value for damage of 33.63% was 19, 37, 26 and 31 kPa for atmospheric, pressurized, elongated and small equipment, respectively.

This paper focuses on the problem of adaptive output feedback stabilization for a class of stochastic nonlinear system with unknown control directions. By using a linear state transformation, the unknown control coefficients are lumped together, such that the original system is transformed to a new system for which control design becomes feasible. By employing the input-driven observer, a novel adaptive neural network (NN) output-feedback controller which only contains one adaptive parameter is developed for such systems by using backstepping technique and NNs' parameterization. The proposed control design guarantees that all the signals in the closed-loop systems are 4-moment semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded.

Scalar field mapping has many applications including environmental monitoring, search and rescue, etc. In such applications there is a need to achieve a certain level of confidence regarding the estimates at each location. In this paper, a cooperative and active sensing framework is developed to enable scalar field mapping using multiple mobile sensor nodes. The cooperative and active controller is designed via the real-time feedback of the sensing performance to steer the mobile sensors to new locations in order to improve the sensing quality. During the movement of the mobile sensors, the measurements from each sensor node and its neighbors are taken and fused with the corresponding confidences using distributed consensus filters. As a result an online map of the scalar field is built with a certain level of confidence of the estimates. We conducted computer simulations to validate and evaluate our proposed algorithms

Brain-computer interface (BCI) controlled wheelchair robots can serve as powerful aids for severely disabled people in their daily life, especially to help them move voluntarily. In order to better understand human “thought”, owing to the development of the hybrid brain/muscle interface technique, in this paper, we present a real-time hybrid brain/muscle interface to control a wheelchair directly to keep the disables recovering several motion capabilities by using noninvasive motor imagery Electroencephalography (EEG) and Electromyography (EMG). The EMG and EEG signals from the users are extracted to control the motion of an intelligent wheelchair. Both signals processing consists of off-line training, online control evaluation, and real-time control. An algorithm called the common spatial patterns (CSP) is used in this human-robot system to extract the most discriminative spatial patterns pairs as features. The extensive experiments were conducted on the developed human-wheelchair systems to verify the proposed approaches.

Gain scheduled L-two-L-infinity filtering for neutral systems with jumping and time-varying parameters

In this paper, global exponential stochastic stability based continuous gain-scheduled robust L-two-L- infinity filtering problem is studied for a class of stochastic neutral systems subject to time-varying parameters. First, the stochastic time-varying neutral systems are described by a series of stochastic time-constant systems at some selected time points, then based on stochastic Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional approach, a new globally exponentially stochastically stabilizable criterion is derived for each of the jumping system by means of linear matrix inequalities. Subsequently, L- two-L-infinity filtering systems are designed for such linear jump systems. Finally; continuous gain-scheduled approach is employed to design time-varying filter systems for the whole working region. A simulation example shows the effectiveness and potential of the developed techniques.

An improved included angle dividing method is proposed for Hammerstein systems. In this dividing method, nonlinearity of the system is taken into account to distribute gridding points, so distribution is more reasonable and computation load in dividing is reduced largely. Based on the dividing result, a multimodel predictive controller is designed to overcome the drawbacks of the common nonlinearity inversion control method for Hammerstein systems.

Hybrid electric vehicle techniques have been widely studied in recent years for their potential to significantly improve the fuel economy and reduce the emissions. In this paper, a hybrid energy management strategy is presented for a parallel hybrid vehicle. The proposed strategy incorporates a fuzzy logic controller to assess the amount of engine and motor's output torque and a charge sustaining scheme to ensure better battery's charge balance during the driving cycle. Finally, computer simulation works are carried out to evaluate the proposed energy management strategy. It was found that significant fuel consumption and emissions reduction could be achieved. © 2012 IEEE.

For a class of uniformly observable nonlinear multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems with unknown parameters in both state and output equations, an adaptive observer is designed in a constructive manner based on the techniques of high gain observer and adaptive estimation. The high gain adaptive observer for joint state and unknown parameter estimation is conceptually simple. The new algorithm makes use of a time varying gain matrix for unknown parameter estimation, which simplifies the initialization and parameter tuning. In order to establish the global exponential convergence of the adaptive observer, a persistent excitation condition is required. Consequently, the global exponential convergence for simultaneous estimation of states and unknown parameters is formally established following a simple procedure. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the performance of this adaptive observer.

A gridding algorithm based on gap metric is proposed for multimodel control of nonlinear systems. In contrast to the common evenly distributed gridding algorithm used in multimodel decomposition, the proposed gap metric based gridding algorithm aims to reduce reliance on previous knowledge and experience and makes the gridding more systematic and more reasonable. Based on the proposed gridding algorithm, an improved integrated multimodel H∞ loop-shaping control is developed, which realizes information symmetry between local linear model selection and local controller design, and raises the efficiency of multimodel controller design largely.
