Signal processing is studied for Sagnac fiber distributed sensors. Wavelet denoising and wavelet decomposition are comparatively used to analyze signals in frequency domain to give smoothed frequency spectra, based on which null frequencies of the spectra are found more accurately. The analysis is helpful to more accurately locate the disturbance.

We describe a general engineering method to compute a tighter bound on fiber-optic channel capacity and the optimum source distribution. This method first determines the conditional probability density functions of an optical fiber channel by evaluating histograms, or by instantons or edgeworth expansion approach. Starting from any source distribution, we generate source and output sequences to estimate the information rate and calculate A-posteriori State-Transition Weight. The optimum source distribution is obtained by constrained stochastic Arimoto-Blahut algorithm. We apply the proposed methods on a 64 iterative polarization quantization source. The optimized capacity per single-polarization per channel is higher than achievable information rate. As the transmission distance increases the optimized distribution is changed from Gaussian-like distribution to non-Gaussian-like distribution. This is due to the fact that the nonlinear interaction of ASE noise and Kerr nonlinearities cannot be compensated for by back-propagation method.

Influence of second harmonic modulation on operation characteristics of an open-loop fiber optic gyroscope

The piezoelectric transducer(PZT) is often used to provide unreciprocal phase modulation in an open-loop fiber optic gyroscope(FOG), but the non-linearities can affect the stability of work point and induce the Saganc phase error. In this paper, the spurious modulation signal output caused by the second harmonic phase modulation and phase delay is analyzed in theory. Numerical results demonstrate that it would be better choose the second and fourth harmonic components for the small Sagnac phase, while the first and to third harmonic components for the big Sagnac phase to demodulate the work point. By comparing the stabilities of work point at the zero degree and 90 degree of phase delay angle, a scheme to get stable work point is proposed. If a larger phase delay angle is adopted in the phase demodulation, the error of work point can be decreased to the magnitude of 10-5 order, and the phase demodulation error can be reduced to 10-5 rad.

Multi-wavelength fiber ring laser based on a chirped moiré fiber grating and a semiconductor optical amplifier

A simple and cost-effective multi-wavelength fiber ring laser based on a chirped Moire fiber grating （CMFG） and a semiconductor optical amplifier （SOA） is proposed. Stable triple-wavelength lasing oscillations at room temperature are experimentally demonstrated. The measured optical signal-to-noise ratio （SNR） reaches the highest value of 50 dB and the power fluctuation of each wavelength is less than 0.2 dB within a 1-h period. To serve as a wavelength selective element, the CMFG possesses excellent comb-like filtering characteristics including stable wavelength interval and ultra-narrow passband, and its fabrication method is easy and flexible. The lasing oscillation shows a narrower bandwidth than SOA-based multi-wavelength fiber lasers utilizing some other kinds of wavelength selective components. Methods to optimize the laser performance are also discussed.

A compact single-polarization fiber laser with fiber Bragg gratings inscripted in a polarization-maintaining erbium-doped germanosilicate fiber is demonstrated experimentally. The single-wavelength and single- polarization regime of our studied laser is achieved by applying a radial stress upon one of two gratings and stretching the other one axially to adjust the reflection peak match. Two single-wavelength and single- polarization lasing lines are realized respectively with fine power stability.

Analysis and Simulation of Adiabatic Bend Transitions in Optical Fibers

A low-loss criterion for bend transitions in optical fibers is proposed. An optical fiber can be tightly bent with low loss to be adiabatic for the fundamental mode, provided that an approximate upper bound on the rate of change of bend curvature for a given bend curvature is satistied. Two typical adiabatic bend transition paths, the optimum profile and linear protile, are analyzed and studied numerically. A realizable adiabatic transition with an Archimedean spiral profile is introduced for low bend loss in tightly bent optical fibers. Design of the transitions is based on modeling of the propagation and coupling characteristics of the core and cladding modes, which clearly illustrate the physical processes involved.

Suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering with phase modulator in soliton pulse compression

A phase modulator is employed in the scheme of soliton pulse compression with dispersion shifted fiber （DSF）. Stimulated Brillouin scattering （SBS） effect, as a negative influence here, can be dramatically suppressed after optical phase modulation. The experimental result shows that the launched power required for high-order soliton pulse compression has been significantly increased by 11 dB under the condition of 100-MHz phase modulation. Accordingly, the experiment of picosecond pulse compression generated from electro-absorption sampling window （EASW） has also been implemented.
