In this paper, the time domain circuit finite difference method is studied. This method can be used to analyze the transient transmission characteristics of the equivalent circuit constructed by the distributed circuit parameters, which are extracted from the non-uniform transmission lines. The stability of the method is studied. The method is then used to analyze the reflected and transmitted pulse waveforms of the equivalent circuit. By comparing the waveforms obtained by this method with those obtained by FDTD, the applicability of this method can be studied.

The dispersion of 8×10Gb/s wavelength division multiplex (WDM) system has been compensated by the cascaded chirped fiber Bragg gratings(CFBGs), with ITU-T standard wavelengths and wavelength grid. The ASE of the EDFA could be reduced, the OSNR of the transmitted signal could be increased and the fluctuation of the EDFA gain could be controlled in the certain scope by the dispersion compensated CFBGs' WDM system. Impact of cascaded CFBGs' delay ripple on dispersion compensation has been analyzed. Experiment of error-free 8×10Gb/s 2015km transmission without forward error correction (FEC) and electronic repeaters were demonstrated. In the transmission, simplex CFBGs compensators were used and no other form of dispersion compensators were adopted. The experiment result showed that the consistency of the dispersion compensating in each channel is perfect over 2015km optical fiber transmission. The experiment result does agree with the theoretic analysis.

Considering the variations of the refractive index and hole pitch with the temperature synchronously, the influences of temperature on the optical properties of near-rectangle core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs), especially on the polarization and dispersion, are analyzed with a full vector model based on super-lattice. Numerical results demonstrate that the variation of polarization and dispersion is quite little even if large variation in temperature occurs. This means that the near-rectangle core PCF has good temperature stability.

The influences of drawing parameters on the shape of capillaries and photonic crystal fiber (PCF) are investigated during the fabrication process of two-mode PCF. Experimental equipments of filling gas to increase pressure and high accuracy temperature control are developed to prevent the deformation of air holes such as collapse, out of round and disuniform efficiently during the fabrication process. With introducing two sizes of air holes into the cladding of PCF, a new two-mode broadband PCF is successfully fabricated. Numerical results demonstrate that only two-mode, i.e. LP01 and LP11even can propagate in the wavelength range from 500 nm to 1890 nm which is much wider than that in elliptical core two-mode PCF. This two mode PCF gives a new way to develop fiber interference sensor.
