Optical waveguide is used to guide the transmission of light. This paper reviews multilayer optical waveguide and some devices based on it. The optical waveguide can be divided into single-layer and multilayer optical waveguides in general. Here, multilayer cylindrical waveguide and multilayer planar waveguides were mainly focused. The analyzing method and the structures of waveguides were also demonstrated in briefly. Both these multilayer optical waveguide used in different kinds of optical devices including optical modulator, laser, optical amplifier, optical switch and special fiber were further presented. At last, the principle and structure of these multilayer optical devices were compared.

A refractive index sensor based on single-mode no-core single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. When the difference between surrounding refractive index (SRI) and the refractive index of no-core fiber (NCF) is relatively small, the NCF can be treated as a weakly guiding multimode fiber with step-index profile, consttructing the traditional single-mode multimode single-mode (SMS) fiber structure. Under the weakly guiding condition, the mode excitation and the output characteristics of this sensor are analyzed by using linear polarization mode approximation method. And numerical calculations are carried out based on the theoretical analysis. Numerical simulations show that the characteristic wavelength in the output spectrum will shift as the SRI changes, which reflects the refractive index sensing capability of this fiber structure. For verifying testify the conclusion of the numerical simulation, several experiments have been carried out. As the SRI increases, the characteristic wavelength shows blue shift correspondingly, which agrees well with the numerical simulation and the theoretical anticipation. The sensitivity of this sensor obtained from experiments reaches 205.42 nm/RIU for a refractive index range from 1.3 to *** a further confirmatory experiment for testing the absolute ethylalcohol in room temperature indicates that such a refractive index sensor's relative error is 0.1%.

Jammed-array wideband sawtooth (JAWS) filter has periodic multi-channel sawtooth spectrum. Due to the complex spectral components, it's difficult to make a passive multi-channel sawtooth filter. In this article, we present a modified JAWS filter with low loss. It only consists of four elements, including a fiber collimator, two lenses and a virtually-imaged phased array (VIPA). The beam transmitted through the VIPA is collected by a lens and a large area photodetector rather than a mirror is used to reflect the beam back into the fiber. The extra insertion loss is lower than 6 dB and the performance of the filter is much better than that of the JAWS filter with beam reflected by a mirror. The main characteristics of the jammed-array wideband sawtooth filter based on a virtually-imaged phased array are studied systematically. The main parameters, such as linearity, duty cycle and signal-to-noise ratio, are optimized by numerical simulation and tested by the experiment. Since the free spectrum range of the filter is decided by the thickness of VIPA, the optimization of VIPA with different thicknesses is also discussed. The filter might be used in fast sensitive interrogation of concatenated multi-channel fiber Bragg grating sensors and ultra-high-frequency electrical sawtooth waveform generation.
