A stable high signal to noise ratio (SNR) narrow linewidth linear cavity single-wavelength Er-doped fiber laser is reported. In the experiment, we used a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot (FBG F-P) etalon and a Fiber Loop Mirror (FLM) as the reflectors of the laser cavity, and used a length of 4m Er-doped fiber as the saturable absorber to suppress mode hopping and stabilize frequency effectively. An all fiber polarization controller (PC) was used to restrain spatial hole burning effect in gain fiber. Using a length of 3m Er-doped fiber pumped by a laser diode at 975nm, stable single-wavelength laser at 1544.714nm was acquired, and the 3dB linewidth of laser was 0.013nm. The corresponding threshold of laser was 30mW, the SNR was as high as 70dB, and the slope efficiency was about 0.5%. © 2012 IEEE.

A simple and high-degree accuracy sensor for solution concentration and temperature based on fused tapering optical fiber coupler is fabricated. The change of refractive index in the evanescent field on the fused region of an optical fiber coupler shifts the output coupling visibility. Therefore the coupling visibility is changed with variation of solution concentration (refractive index) and temperature surrounding the fused tapering zone of the coupler. The sodium chloride solution is studied experimentally. Based on the experiment data and the least square method, the concentration accuracy of the coupler sensor is evaluated to be 10e-3 and the temperature accuracy is about 0.823°C. The stability of the sensor system with the optical coupler can reach the order of 10e-4. This simple, low-cost, good-stability and high-degree accuracy coupler sensor is suitable to be used in the environmental monitoring, analytical chemistry, and food safety testing. © 2012 IEEE.

A switchable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and experimentMly demonstrated, which is constructed by a polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop mirror （PMF-SLM） and two FBGs with different wavelengths. Wavelength switching operation is achieved by properly adjusting the polariza~ tion controller （PC） in the PMF-SLM. Stable single- or dual-wavelength lasing output can be realized. The maximum amplitude variation for every lasing wavelength is less than 1 dB, and the signal-to-amplified spontaneous emission （ASE） ratio is about 35 dB.

Analysis of Transmission Characteristics of Tilted Long Period Fiber Gratings With Full Vector Complex Coupled Mode Theory

Based on the full vector complex coupled mode theory, a detailed analysis is made on the transmission spectrum characteristics of tilted long period fiber gratings. New transmission peaks are observed, which are located beside the long wavelength side of each transmission peak in the transmission spectrum of normal long period fiber gratings. The emerging transmission peaks are quite sensitive to both the grating tilted angle and the surrounding refractive index, and the corresponding relationship is discussed. Furthermore, a novel sensing characteristic is investigated about the tilted long period fiber gratings, which is related to the transmission resonant wavelength and peak amplitude.

The 10-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off-keying (OOK) data transmission over a 100-km transmission fiber link employing an all fiber 1.55-\mu m single longitudinal mode (SLM) distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser as the signal source is demonstrated. The experimental result is comparable with that of the transmission system by using a commercially semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) laser.

A PGC demodulation method based on the fundamental frequency mixing

An improved algorithm of phase generated carrier (PGC) demodulation for optical fiber interferometer sensors is proposed. When the amplitude of the phase disturbance is relatively small, the phase demodulation with this algorithm can be accomplished with the fundamental frequency mixing only, yielding a signal waveform proportional to the original one. Thus the efficiency of the whole demodulation process can be improved. The simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed algorithm In the signal detection experiment based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with the external modulation, the correlation coefficient between the demodulated signal and the original one is greater than 0.99.

A cost-effective frequency-quadrupling scheme which is capable of generating high frequency millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal is theoretically proposed. By employing optical two-step self-heterodyne technique, this scheme is easy to realize and have a high efficiency. Base on this scheme, a frequency-octupling frequency component is generated. This proposed scheme is a viable solution for the future ultra-high frequency mm-wave applications.
