Calculation of the radiation field is an important work in the novel leaky coaxial cable (LCX) design. By analyzing the influence scope of the slots on the LCX, the minimum length that should be employed in the calculation of LCX can be determined. In this paper, a method of finding the influence scope of slots on LCX is proposed. In this method, the influence scope of slot is studied by analyzing the change of near field distribution when the cable length increases. After the influence scope is gotten, the minimum length of the cable is also obtained. In addition, the radiation field distribution of a single period is also given, which can also be used to determine the influence scope of slots.

Design of broadband nearly-zero flattened dispersion highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber

We propose a new structure of broadband nearly-zero flattened dispersion highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber （PCF）. Through optimizing the diameters of the first two inner rings of air-holes and the GeO2 doping concentration of the core, the nonlinear coefficient is up to 47 W^-***^-1 at the wavelength of 1.55 um and nearly-zero flattened dispersion of ±0.5 ps/（nm·km） is achieved in the telecommunication window （1460 - 1625 nm）. Due to the use of GeO2-doped core, this innovative structure can offer not only a large nonlinear coefficient and broadband nearly-zero flattened dispersion but also low leakage losses.

The characteristics of transmission spectra for the all fiber, multi-cavity Fabry- Perot （FP） configuration based on fiber Bragg gratings （FBG） are theoretically analyzed and modeled. The general transmission matrix function for the structure with any number of cavities is derived, and explicit expression of the power trans- mission coefficient for symmetrical two-cavity FP is presented. The general condi- tions for flat-top single resonant peak at the central wavelength in FBG stop band are derived and verified in the numerical simulation section. The transmission peaks of single-cavity and two-cavity FP structures are compared and discussed, and results show that compared to the single-cavity FP, flatness of the top and steepness at the edge of transmission peak can be improved by introducing one more cavity. The resonant transmission peak properties of two-cavity structure are investigated in detail for various values of cavity length and FBGs with different reflection characteristics, and the design guidelines for transmission-type filters are presented. The results show that the steepness of peak slope can be improved by increase of FBG reflectivities, and these kinds of filters can be used as nar- row-band single-channel selectors and multi-channel wavelength de-multiplexing by properly choosing the length of cavities and reflectivities of FBGs.

A Continuously Tunable Erbium-Doped Fibre Laser Using Tunable Fibre Bragg Gratings and Optical Circulator

A continuously tunable erbium-doped fibre laser （TEDFL） based on tunable fibre Bragger grating （TFBG） and a three-port optical circulator （OC） is proposed and demonstrated. The OC acts as a 100%-reflective mirror. A strain-induced uniform fibre Bragger grating （FBG） which functions as a partial-reflecting mirror is implemented in the linear cavity. By applying axial strain onto the TFBG, a continuously tunable lazing output can be realized. The wavelength tuning range covers approximately 7.00nm in C band （from 1543.6161 to 1550.3307nm）. The side mode suppression ratio （SMSR） is better than 50 dB, and the 3 dB bandwidth of the laser is less than 0.01 nm. Moreover, an array waveguide grating （AWG） is inserted into the cavity for wavelength preselecting, and a 50 km transmission experiment was performed using our TEDFL at a 10 Gb/s modulation rate.

2500 km-10 Gbps RZ transmission system based on dispersion compensation CFBGs without electric regenerator

The characteristics of chirped fiber Bragg gratings（CFBGs） are optimized so that the ripple coefficient of the power reflectivity spectrum and group time delay are less than 1 dB and |± 15| ps, group delay is about 2600 ps/nm, polarization module dispersion is very small, PMD < 2 ps,-3 dB bandwidth is about0.35 nm, and insertion loss is about 4–5 d Bm. Using dispersion compensation CFBG, a 2500 km-10 Gbps RZ optical signal transmission system on G.652 fiber was successfully demonstrated without an electric regenerator by optimizing dispersion management and loss management. The RZ optical signal was generated through a two-stage modulation method. At 2081 km, the power penalty of transmission is about 3 dB(conditions: RZ signal, BER = 10-12, PRBS = 1023-1); At 2560 km, the power penalty is about 5 dB. It is superior to the system using NRZ under the same conditions.

Dual-wavelength with orthogonal polarizations erbium-doped fiber ring laser at room temperature is proposed. One polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating (PMFBG) in a Sagnac loop interferometer is used as the wavelengthselective filter. Due to the polarization hole burning (PHB) enhanced by the PMFBG, the laser can operate in stable dualwavelength operation with wavelength spacing of 0.336 nm at room temperature by adjusting a polarization controller (PC). The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) is over 52 dB. The amplitude variation in nearly one and half an hour is less than 0.6 dB for both wavelengths. © 2008 SPIE.

This paper presents a novel methodology with which the linear chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) can be effectively optimized in both reflection bandwidth and group delay ripples (GDR). The parameters of specified apodization functions is designed combining with transferring matrix method (TMM) and genetic algorithm (GA) in this scheme. The simulation shows that after 200 generations, chirped fiber Bragg grating can reveal its better performance of no more than 44.13ps GDR in 40Gbps working bandwidth used for chromatic dispersion compensation. Moreover, experimental results of 500km 40Gbps optical transmission verify that this kind of fabricated CFBG is qualified for high speed dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system.
