A novel linear-cavity erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. By using a 3 dB coupler as the reflecting mirror and an uniform fiber Bragg grating as the partial reflecting mirror and the wavelength selector, a stable laser output is obtained at room temperature. The full-width at half maximum, the side mode suppression ratio and the output power fluctuation are measured to be small than 0.014 nm, better than 40 dB and less than 0.43 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the lasing wavelength doses not drift in four hours.

The flexible structure of photonic crystal fibre not only offers novel optical properties but also brings some difficulties in keeping the fibre structure in the fabrication process which inevitably cause the optical properties of the resulting fibre to deviate from the designed properties. Therefore, a method of evaluating the optical properties of the actual fibre is necessary for the purpose of application. Up to now, the methods employed to measure the properties of the actual photonic crystal fibre often require long fibre samples or complex expensive equipments. To our knowledge, there are few studies of modeling an actual photonic crystal fibre and evaluating its properties rapidly. In this paper, a novel method, based on the combination model of digital image processing and the finite element method, is proposed to rapidly model the optical properties of the actual photonic crystal fibre. Two kinds of photonic crystal fibres made by Crystal Fiber A/S are modeled. It is confirmed from numerical results that the proposed method is simple, rapid and accurate for evaluating the optical properties of the actual photonic crystal fibre without requiring complex equipment.

An internal monopole antenna with compact size is proposed in this paper, which can be applied to mobile communications, and its frequency band covers GSM850, GSM900, DCS, PCS, UMTS bands simultaneously. It is comprised of a driven monopole and a coupled loop strip. By inserting a folded slit in the driven rectangular patch, two wide bands are achieved. The antenna has a small area of 48 X 12 mm~(2), and is easy to be integrated into the mobile device. Details of the antenna design and experimental results are presented.

For traditional differential fed microstrip patch antenna, the phase difference between the two excitation ports is set to 180 deg. In this paper, the radiation and scattering characteristics of differential microstrip antenna fed by phase difference out of 180 deg are studied. The variations of the co-polarization and cross-polarization radiations of the antenna are analyzed, and the bi-static and mono-static scattering properties of the antenna are also studied. The radiation and scattering characteristics of the two port fed differential antenna are compared with those of the single port fed antennas. Research results show that it is possible to find a phase difference of excitation of dual-port fed antenna that gives low cross-polarization radiation and low scattering.

A novel approach to generate and distribute ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses in optical domain is investigated. In this proposed scheme, a dual-electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (DE-MZM) is biased at its quadrature point so as to realize the linear response. Then the intensity of output optical field can be assumed to the subtraction of two input Gaussian pulses. If the input Gaussian pulses are with the same sharp parameters but different time delays, a quasi-monocycle-waveform UWB signal can be generated. If the input Gaussian pulses are with different amplitudes and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM), a quasi-doublet-waveform UWB signal can be generated. A transmission of the UWB signals through a 25-km single mode fiber is carried out successfully. The results in both temporal and frequency domains are also presented.

We report the fabrication of an optical fiber Bragg grating assisted mismatched coupler based on the fused biconical tapered technology. The investigation of the spectrum properties shows that the coupler has a good filtering property. The drop filtering efficiency as much as 94.2% at 1553.5nm is achieved. Furthermore, using the fabricated coupler, a wavelength de-multiplexing transmission experiment is carried out in a 10Gbps system with NRZ optical signals. Experimental results show that the coupler basically realizes the function of wavelength de-multiplexing.

A low cost, compact and lossless temperature sensor based on twin-core fiber(TCF) is demonstrated and manufactured by splicing two single mode fibers(SMF) to the ends of a piece of TCF. The extinction ratio of the comb transmission spectrum is bigger than 15dB. The operating temperature range from-30°C to175°C is tested and the temperature sensitivity of 0.02 rad / C /m below 90 and 0.032 rad / C /m above 90 is obtained. Finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the propagation constant of the two supermodes, which is consistent with the comb transmission spectrum of the experiment.
