This paper focuses on the anti-windup-based dynamic controller synthesis problem for a certain class of nonlinear systems subject to actuator saturation. Based on the Linear-Fractional Representation(LFR) techniques, the original system is transformed into a linear system incorporating a sector-bounded nonlinearity and a saturation nonlinearity with an additional linear-fractional constraint. By using a quadratic Lyapunov function and with a modified sector condition describing the saturation nonlinearity, LMI-based conditions for the synthesis of an anti-windup-based dynamic controller are presented aiming at enlarging the estimated region of attraction(ROA) of the closed-loop systems. A numerical example illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Low-rank representation (LRR) has recently attracted a great deal of attention due to its pleasing efficacy in exploring low-dimensional subspace structures embedded in data. For a given set of observed data corrupted with sparse errors, LRR aims at learning a lowest-rank representation of all data jointly. LRR has broad applications in pattern recognition, computer vision and signal processing. In the real world, data often reside on low-dimensional manifolds embedded in a high-dimensional ambient space. However, the LRR method does not take into account the non-linear geometric structures within data, thus the locality and similarity information among data may be missing in the learning process. To improve LRR in this regard, we propose a general Laplacian regularized low-rank representation framework for data representation where a hypergraph Laplacian regularizer can be readily introduced into, i.e., a Non-negative Sparse Hyper-Laplacian regularized LRR model (NSHLRR). By taking advantage of the graph regularizer, our proposed method not only can represent the global low-dimensional structures, but also capture the intrinsic non-linear geometric information in data. The extensive experimental results on image clustering, semi-supervised image classification and dimensionality reduction tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). This paper investigates the output-tracking control of time-varying linear (TVL) system. Note that the input is always limited in a range due to actuator physical constraints or energy-saving purposes. By combining the Zhang dynamics (ZD) and the sigmoid function, an effective controller, termed sigmoid function aided ZD (SFAZD) controller, is designed for tracking the TVL system. Simulative verifications substantiate that the proposed SFAZD controller can achieve accurate tracking results, and limit the input in the range during the tracking process.

Singularity-conquering tracking control of a class of chaotic systems using Zhang-gradient dynamics

This study investigates the tracking-control problems of the Lorenz, Chen and Lu chaotic systems. Note that the input-output linearisation method cannot solve these tracking-control problems because of the existence of singularities, at which such chaotic systems fail to have a well-defined relative degree. By combining Zhang dynamics and gradient dynamics, an effective controller-design method, termed Zhang-gradient (ZG) method, is proposed for tracking control of the three chaotic systems. This ZG method, with singularities conquered, is capable of solving the tracking-control problems of the chaotic systems. Both theoretical analyses and simulative verifications substantiate that the tracking controllers based on the ZG method can achieve satisfactory tracking accuracy and successfully conquer singularities encountered during the tracking-control process.

Common nature of learning between BP-type and Hopfield-type neural networks

Being two famous neural networks, the error back-propagation (BP) algorithm based neural networks (i.e., BP-type neural networks, BPNNs) and Hopfield-type neural networks (HNNs) have been proposed, developed, and investigated extensively for scientific research and engineering applications. They are different from each other in a great deal, in terms of network architecture, physical meaning and training pattern. In this paper of literature-review type, we present in a relatively complete and creative manner the common natures of learning between BP-type and Hopfield-type neural networks for solving various (mathematical) problems. Specifically, comparing the BPNN with the HNN for the same problem-solving task, e.g., matrix inversion as well as function approximation, we show that the BPNN weight-updating formula and the HNN state-transition equation turn out to be essentially the same. Such interesting phenomena promise that, given a neural-network model for a specific problem solving, its potential dual neural-network model can thus be developed. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Recently, the synchronization of two chaotic systems is attracting more and more attentions because of its potential applications in communication security, aerospace industry and many other fields. In this paper, by combining Zhang dynamics(ZD) and gradient dynamics(GD), a novel effective controller-design method termed Zhang-gradient(ZG) method is firstly developed for the chaos synchronization problem with multiple inputs(i.e., three or two inputs). Via this ZG method, the traditional three-input chaos synchronization problem can be successfully solved with desirable convergence rate and satisfactory accuracy. In addition, by taking advantage of the coupling property of the chaotic system, a creative extension of the ZG method is investigated to solve the thorny two-input chaos synchronization problem. Simulation verifications further demonstrate that the controllers based on the ZG method can not only achieve satisfactory synchronization accuracy and exponential convergence rate on the three-input chaos synchronization problem but also successfully solve the chaos synchronization problem with only two inputs.

Helicopter sling load has a wide range of applications. However, the sling load of helicopter may make it dangerous. In this paper, the spot hover control and the swing control of helicopter sling load system are investigated. To solve the problems, the ZG method, which is the combination of Zhang dynamics (ZD) and gradient dynamics (GD) methods, is adopted. Firstly, with the purpose of helicopter spot hover considered, a z2g1 controller is designed and proposed by using the ZG method, where ZD is used for two times and GD is used for one time. Secondly, with the purpose of swing control of helicopter sling load considered, another z2g1 controller is designed and proposed. Simulation results on a mathematical model of helicopter sling load system equipped with the proposed z2g1 controllers are presented for different control purposes, which substantiate the effectiveness and significance of the proposed method and controllers. © 2015 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Infinitely many Zhang functions resulting in various ZNN models for time-varying matrix inversion with link to Drazin inverse

In this Letter, by generalizing the notion of Zhang functions (ZFs) from previous work, a novel general-form Zhang function (NGFZF) is proposed, developed and investigated. Specifically, based on the NGFZF, infinitely many ZFs (as error functions) can be readily generated by successively selecting the different values of its parameters. Besides, by employing the NGFZF, a novel general-form Zhang neural net (NGFZNN) is proposed and studied for real-time solution of a time-varying matrix inverse (also termed, Zhang matrix inverse, ZMI). Moreover, a link between ZMI and Drazin inverse is discovered and further generalized to solve for the time-varying Drazin inverse (TVDI). (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lately, Zhang et al have proposed the notion of infinitely many Z-type functions (ZTFs) leading to various Z-type neural nets (ZTNNs), and established a systematic approach (i.e., the general-form ZTNN, GFZTNN) for the real-time solution of a time-varying matrix inverse (also termed, Zhang matrix inverse, ZMI). Being a supplementary and in-depth research, this paper provides the theoretical result on the convergence performance of the GFZTNN model. Besides, such a GFZTNN model is generalized and exploited for computing the time-varying Drazin inverse (TVDI) instead of the usual constant one. Finally, computer simulations with two illustrative examples are performed to show the efficacy and advantage of two specific ZTNN models originating from the GFZTNN model for the realtime solution of ZMI and/or TVDI.
