The morphologies and mechanical properties of water-blown polyurethane (PU) foams with various water levels (3-11phr) were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR) and physi-mechanical evaluations. The results indicate that water level has various effect on the chemical compositions and microstructures of water-blown PU foams and affectes the physi-mechanical properties because water not only formed the gas for foaming but also involved with the chain-extension of polyurea-urethane resin. As water level increased from 3 phr to 11phr, the cream time, gel time, tack-free time, polyurea content and hydrogen bonding of PU foams increased gradually, while the density and mechanical properties of PU foam decreased accordingly. The water-blown PU foams with low density but good performances can be prepared by adjusting the water level.

In order to investigate the chemical modifications of wood forming tissue from Pinus koraiensis under different stem inclined angle, the change was measured by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR). The results showed that the relative intensities of absorption bands at 1510, 1457, 1232 and 1267 cm-1 increased significantly, whereas the relative intensities of absorption bands at 1739, 1371 and 1160 cm-1 decreased. The absorption peaks and quantitative analysis of lignin showed similar variation patterns in different inclined angle. However, the cellulose crystallinity calculated by spectrum information showed contradictory with early reports. The results indicated chemical variation was in wood forming tissue of inclined stems and it displayed correlation and similar change pattern.

this research prepared a diatomite-wood powder/polypropylene composite for making use of diatomite and wood powder polypropylene (PP). Mechanical test results showed that, compared to the samples without diatomite, the impact strength, static bending strength and tensile strength were increased by up to 25.9%, 8.2% and 9.5% respectively for the composites with proper diatomite content. The Cone Calorimeter tests for the combustion performance of the composites found that the composite with 20 percent diatomite content has a decreased peak of the heat release rate and a reduced the total heat release compared to the composite without diatomite.

Hydrogenation of alkali lignin was carried out in the presence of Pd/C catalyst at hydrogen pressure 1∼5 MPa. Catalytic activity of Pd/C catalyst was investigated according to the structure changes of alkali lignin, which were characterized by UV and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. The measurement of average molecular weight undertook by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Changes on function groups of alkali lignin were analyzed through chemical methods. Results show that total hydroxyl, phenolic hydroxyl and alcoholic hydroxyl increase 64.23%, 37.10% and 89.67%, respectively, while carbonyl and carboxyl decrease separately 43.50% and 53.41%. No significant differences of the total acidic groups and the phenyl structure were found after reaction. GPC analysis shows the weight average molecular weight (Mw) and number average molecular weight (Mn) are both decreased, and the polydispersity of alkali lignin is increased The active function groups of alkali lignin are increased obviously, and reactive activity of alkali lignin is enhanced as a result. The present results demonstrate Pd/C catalyst shows an excellent catalytic activity on reductive reaction of alkali lignin and hydrogen.
