One fundamental problem in services computing is how to bridge the gap between business requirements and various heterogeneous IT services. This involves eliciting business requirements and building a solution accordingly by reusing available services. While the business requirements are commonly elicited through use cases and scenarios, it is not straightforward to transform the use case model into a service model, and the existing manual approach is cumbersome and error-prone. In this paper, the environment ontology, which is used to model the problem space, is utilized to facilitate the model transformation process. The environment ontology provides a common understanding between business analysts and software engineers. The required software functionalities as well as the available services' capabilities are described using this ontology. By semi-automatically matching the required capability of each use case to the available capabilities provides by services, a use case is realized by that set of services. At the end of this paper, a fictitious case study was used to illustrate how this approach works. © 2010 IEEE.

Hand segmentation is the basis of many vision-based hand gesture applications in human computer interaction (HCI). This paper proposes a novel method of skin color weighted disparity competition to incorporate the skin color and depth cues for hand segmentation in clutter environment from stereo camera. The basic idea is that the hand disparity will be apparently different from most of the background disparities. Note that we refer to the scene except the user as the background. The proposed method validates a hand pixel by verifying whether the pixel satisfies the disparity limit of the hand more than of the background. Its novelty lies in incorporating the skin color probability to weight the disparity competition to improve the robustness of validation and the accuracy of boundary location. Experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. © 2010. The copyright of this document resides with its authors.

Locally linear embedding (LLE) is an elegant nonlinear method for feature extraction and manifold learning, which attempt to project the original data into a lower dimensional feature space by preserving the local neighborhood structure. However, LLE algorithm fails when it is directly applied to video with multi-shot. In this paper, video manifold feature is defined firstly, and then using LLE we extract video manifold feature through adding virtual frames on an enriched set. The proposed manifold feature extraction method is applied to shot transition and video trajectories. The video manifold feature description gives a new tool for video analysis. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduced an intelligent call center platform (ICCP) for communication enterprises. The platform is based on two broad suites of technologies: Knowledge management and natural language processing. First, we designed an enterprise knowledge modeling technology, and provided a knowledge management system for managing customer service knowledge. Then mobile customers are allowed to send Chinese queries, through either Internet tools (e.g. MSN, QQ, BBS and Fetion) or Wireless SM devices (e.g. mobile phones), to a multi-tier natural language understanding engine, and the engine retrieves the knowledge bases to find correct answers after understanding the queries. The ICCP has been successfully used in a domestic communication group since March 2009, and achieved a satisfactory performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Active contours have been one of the most successful methods for image segmentation during the last two decades, but one of the shortcomings of being unable to converge to concavity is a handicap to its effectiveness. In order to address this issue, the gradient vector flow (GVF) was put forth. Although there have been a great number of works on GVF, the image structure has seldom been incorporated into GVF algorithm. In this work, the image structure characterized by the Hessian matrix is incorporated into the GVF algorithm by reformulating the smoothness constraint of GVF into matrix form. In this way, the associated diffusion PDEs are anisotropic and the modified GVF snake can converge to very long concavity and preserve weak edge simultaneously. Experiments and comparisons are presented to demonstrate the properties of the proposed strategies. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a new method for the design of an n-bit synchronous binary up counter in quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA). This method is based on the JK flip-flop which almost always produces the simplest combinational logic in traditional sequential circuits. We implement a new QCA architecture for the JK flip-flop. Compared to the existing QCA JK flip-flop, the majority gate count, cell count, clock cycle count, and area of our QCA JK flip-flop are reduced by 57.1%, 88.1%, 55.6%, and 92.0%, respectively. Based on our QCA JK flip-flop, a method of extending state cells is proposed to design the QCA layout of the n-bit counter, such that all the clock cycle counts between any two state cells become 1. This feature can ensure that one count just takes one clock cycle, in existing methods, however, one count needs to take n-1 clock cycles. Comparisons indicate that, by applying our method, the hardware requirements (i.e., complexity and area) for QCA n-bit counter can be greatly reduced. ©2010 IEEE.

In many areas of pattern recognition and machine learning, subspace selection is an essential step. Fisher's linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is one of the most well-known linear subspace selection methods. However, LDA suffers from the class separation problem. The projection to a subspace tends to merge close class pairs. A recent result, named maximizing the geometric mean of Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences of class pairs (MGMD), can significantly reduce the class separation problem. Furthermore, maximizing the harmonic mean of Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergences of class pairs (MHMD) emphasizes smaller divergences more than MGMD, and deals with the class separation problem more effectively. However, in many applications, labeled data are very limited while unlabeled data can be easily obtained. The estimation of divergences of class pairs is unstable using inadequate labeled data. To take advantage of unlabeled data for subspace selection, semi-supervised MHMD (SSMHMD) is proposed using graph Laplacian as normalization. Quasi-Newton method is adopted to solve the optimization problem. Experiments on synthetic data and real image data show the validity of SSMHMD. ©2010 IEEE.

Although many methods of refining initialization have appeared, the sensitivity of K-Means to initial centers is still an obstacle in applications. In this paper, we investigate a new class of clustering algorithm, K-Alpha Means (KAM), which is insensitive to the initial centers. With K-Harmonic Means as a special case, KAM dynamically weights data points during iteratively updating centers, which deemphasizes data points that are close to centers while emphasizes data points that are not close to any centers. Through replacing minimum operator in K-Means by alpha-mean operator, KAM significantly improves the clustering performances. © 2010 IEEE.

The PMCHWT equation of the double negative media (DNG) is obtained based on its constitutive relationship. And the surface currents and radar cross section (RCS) at a single frequency point is computed by Method of moments (MOM). The asymptotic waveform evaluation (AWE) technique for dispersive dielectric medium is deduced and apllied to electromagnetic scattering analysis of double-negative medium within a given frequency band. ©2010 IEEE.

The increasing amount of videos on the Internet and digital libraries highlights the necessity and importance of interactive video services such as automatically associating additional materials (e.g., advertising logos and relevant selling information) with the video content so as to enrich the viewing experience. Toward this end, this paper presents a novel approach for user-targeted video content association (VCA). In this approach, the salient objects are extracted automatically from the video stream using complementary saliency maps. According to these salient objects, the VCA system can push the related logo images to the users. Since the salient objects often correspond to important video content, the associated images can be considered as content-related. Our VCA system also allows users to associate images to the preferred video content through simple interactions by the mouse and an infrared pen. Moreover, by learning the preference of each user through collecting feedbacks on the pulled or pushed images, the VCA system can provide user-targeted services. Experimental results show that our approach can effectively and efficiently extract the salient objects. Moreover, subjective evaluations show that our system can provide content-related and user-targeted VCA services in a less intrusive way. © 2010 Zhejiang University and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
