In the field of underwater wireless optical communication, optical transmitters and optical receivers need to track and align in real time, which poses challenges to the real-time and accuracy of the measurement method for beam offset. To address this issue, a two-dimensional signal cross-correlation method based on Fourier transform is proposed to measure the beam shift using the unique spatial distribution of vortex beams, and an experimental setup is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2025 SPIE.

Robust Trajectory Design and Task Scheduling With Data Compression in Industrial Internet of Things Assisted by UAV

Data compression technology is able to reduce data size, which can be applied to lower the cost of task offloading in mobile edge computing (MEC). This article addresses the practical challenges for robust trajectory and scheduling optimization based on data compression in the uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted MEC, aiming to minimize the sum energy cost of terminal users while maintaining robust performance during UAV flight. Considering the nonconvexity of the problem and the dynamic nature of the scenario, the optimization problem is reformulated as a Markov decision process (MDP). Then, a randomized ensembled double Q-learning (REDQ) algorithm is adopted to solve the issue. The algorithm allows for higher feasible update-to-data ratio, enabling more effective learning from observed data. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme effectively reduces the energy consumption while ensuring flight robustness. Compared to the PPO and A2C algorithms, energy consumption is reduced by approximately 21.9% and 35.4%, respectively. This method demonstrates significant advantages in complex environments and holds great potential for practical applications. © 2014 IEEE.

Container-based microservice provisioning, with its elasticity in terms of the layered structure, enables the sharing of common layers among different edge computing tasks, both within and across edge servers (ES). However, due to the potential hardware breakdowns, each ES may prone to failures, affecting its lifetime (i.e., the time-length that an ES works continuously without interruptions), and in turn leading to the collapse of their hosted/provided microservices or the other ESs’ microservices requesting common layers from it. Obviously, if such an issue cannot be well addressed, the reliability of microservices in serving corresponding tasks may be severely reduced. In this paper, we study the microservice deployment optimization with layer sharing for maximizing the system-wide reliability while satisfying all tasks’ delay requirements. Considering dynamic task generations and the asynchronization of various decision variables with different triggers, we design an online optimization algorithm by leveraging an improved Lyapunov technique integrating randomized rounding and Lagrangian method, which iteratively solves the problem over different timescales. Theoretical analyses and simulations evaluate the performance of the proposed solution, and show its superiority over counterparts. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

We propose a tunable waveguide-type terahertz (THz) narrowband filter based on heterostructure waveguide filled with liquid-crystals (LCs). This filter consists of two periodic corrugated waveguide structures with different duty cycles, which produces a narrow linewidth transmission peak within the original stop band. By adjusting the effective refractive index of LC through external fields, the center frequency of the transmission peak can be tuned. The simulated electric field proves that the narrow linewidth transmission peak is mainly attributed to the local resonance occurred at the interface. Furthermore, an increase in the number of periods can greatly reduce bandwidth and improve the Q-factor of the filter. The proposed electrically tunable THz narrowband filter based on the heterostructure waveguide provide an effective method for the design and development of THz narrowband filter. © 2025 SPIE.

The application of optical switches has attracted significant attention in recent years due to their potential in advanced communication systems and integrated photonics. Here, we propose a thermally tunable terahertz (THz) AND-logic switching device based on vanadium dioxide (VO2) micro-ring resonators (MRRs) on a silicon platform. VO2 exhibits an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) characteristic at relatively low temperatures, and the conductivity can be increased by 4-5 orders of magnitude under external thermal pumps, with the a few picoseconds of rapid phase transition process, which allows for highly efficient modulation of THz waves. This transition shows significant advantages in terms of low-power operation and dynamic control over the THz response. Based on the IMT transition of VO2, the device achieves precise control of THz waves, which enables reliable AND-logic operation. At low temperatures, when VO2 is in the insulating phase, the hybrid VO2 MRR exhibits logic "1". Conversely, at high temperatures, when VO2 transitions to the metallic phase, logic "0" is created. Simulation results demonstrate that when thermal stimulation is applied simultaneously to both micro-rings (A=1, B=1), the transmittance is greater than 0.8 at 1.5142 THz, while for other input combinations, the transmittance close to 0. The modulation depth up to 84%. The simulated electric fields confirm that the AND logic operation function is mainly attributed to the VO2 phase transition and the resonance effect of MRRs. The proposed VO2-based structure demonstrates improved performance compared to conventional materials, including faster switching speeds, lower power consumption, and a higher degree of tunability across the THz spectrum. This work highlights the promise of VO2 as a key material for next-generation tunable THz devices, offering a scalable solution for photonic and communication technologies. © 2025 SPIE.

We propose a dual-band tunable terahertz (THz) absorber based on all-dielectric InSb metamaterials. This absorber consists of a resonant structure at the top and a dielectric substrate at the bottom. The resonant structure layer interacts with THz waves to achieve high-efficiency absorption, while the dielectric substrate layer not only provides support but also effectively prevents THz waves from penetrating the absorber. Simulation results show that under room temperature conditions (T=300 K), the absorber achieves absorption rates of 96.85% and 98.76% at the frequencies of 0.366 THz and 0.991 THz, respectively. As the temperature increases, these two absorption peaks shift towards a higher frequency range. Based on the unique properties of InSb, the frequency shift range of the proposed absorber can be tuned through external thermal excitation, with a maximum of 0.24 THz. Meanwhile, the absorber maintains a high absorption rate of over 85%. The incorporation of InSb metamaterials enables temperature tunability, allowing the absorber to exhibit enhanced performance over a broader temperature range, making it suitable for sensor devices that require precise control over both absorption efficiency and temperature tuning. © 2025 SPIE.

Two-stage deep complex gated convolution attention network for multi-channel noise suppression

Modeling the correlation information in the complex spectrum for multi-channel noise suppression remains a significant challenge. Inadequate modeling can lead to the loss of phase information, which results in a decline in signal quality. Moreover, accurately estimating statistical information such as the spectrum or masks is difficult, often resulting in residual noise in the processed signals. To address these challenges, we propose a two-stage deep complex gated convolution attention network (DC-GCAN). The proposed DC-GCAN incorporates a complex Conformer and a complex encoder-decoder with a gated attention mechanism, which effectively models and enhances the complex spectrum, improving the exchange of information between the encoder and decoder. Our two-stage strategy consists of a beamforming stage and a post-filtering stage. In the beamforming stage, we combine the DC-GCAN with the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer to perform spatial filtering of multi-channel signals. In the post-filtering stage, another DC-GCAN is used to further reduce residual noise. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several competing models on both synthetic speech and non-speech datasets. This indicates that the method can effectively enhance the quality and intelligibility of signals, and is also suitable for applications where the target sound is non-speech. Primary-Ambient Extraction Using Ambient Phase Estimate under Joint Sparsity and Independence Constraints for Stereo Signals

Primary-ambient extraction (PAE) is a technique to enhance the user listening experience in spatial audio reproduction. This is achieved by extracting the primary and ambient components from the sound scene. The PAE approach of ambient phase estimation with a sparsity constraint (APES) leverages the magnitude consistency of ambient components and the sparsity of the primary components to refine the PAE performance. This approach demonstrates an improved extraction accuracy when the ambient component is relatively strong. However, APES suffers from severe extraction errors when the primary amplitudes are equal in two channels of a stereo signal, which is a common sound scene in stereo signals. In this paper, the limitations of APES are analyzed, and a novel ambient phase estimation method is proposed under the joint constraints of sparsity and independence, called APESI. This method uses the independence between the primary component and the ambient component to correct the ambient phase estimation condition. Both objective and subjective experimental results demonstrate that the proposed APESI outperforms the APES and other traditional approaches in terms of extraction accuracy and ambient spatial accuracy, especially when the primary amplitudes are equal. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

QoE-Aware Joint Visual and Haptic Signal Transmission With Adaptive Data Compression for Immersive Interactions in Human Digital Twin

Human digital twin (HDT) is envisioned as a system interconnecting physical twins (PTs) in the real world with virtual twins (VTs) in the digital world, enabling advanced human-centric applications. Unlike optimizing the quality of experience (QoE) of users in single-modal signal transmission for conventional services, users' QoE in multi-modal signal transmission required by HDT is difficult to guarantee. To tackle this, we study an optimization of QoE in multi-modal transmission, focusing on joint visual and haptic signal feedback transmissions from VT to its PT, for providing immersive interactions in HDT. To evaluate a synthesized performance of visual and haptic experiences, we design a comprehensive QoE model, taking into account video quality, continuous video quality switching rate and average haptic feedback error. Then, to maximize QoE with a guarantee on synchronization between visual and haptic signal transmissions, we dynamically optimize bandwidth allocation, bitrate and rendering mode of the video, and haptic signal's compression threshold. To this end, we propose a deep reinforcement learning based algorithm, called VisHap. Furthermore, we build an HDT multi-modal interaction platform for collecting an authentic dataset, and by using it, we conduct experiments, showing that VisHap is not only feasible but also outperforms the counterparts. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we study the coded caching scheme for the (L, K, M, N) multi-user information retrieval (MIR) system, which consists of a content library containing N files, a base station (BS) with L antennas that cannot access the library, and K single-antenna users, each of which can cache at most M files from the library. The users communicate with the others assisted by the BS to decode their required files. In this paper, we focus on designing a coded caching scheme with low communication latency measured by normalized delivery time (NDT), computational complexity, and subpacketizations. When KM/N ≥ L we first simply the precoding matrix in the downlink step to an identity matrix and use the multiple-antenna placement delivery array (MAPDA), which was originally proposed for the multiple-input single-output networks, to generate several new schemes for MIR system. Compared to the existing schemes, both the theoretical and numerical analyses show that our new schemes achieve much lower computational complexity and smaller subpacketizations with the same NDT.
