This paper presents the technique of adaptive critic designs (ACDs) for resolving some traffic control problems, such as urban traffic signal control, ramp metering, highway speed control and so on. ACDs are adaptive optimal methods, whose main idea is to approximate dynamic programming solutions by using a function approximation structure such as neural networks to approximate the cost function or its derivatives. They combine the positive features of both the traditional dynamic programming (e.g., optimality and feedback) and the neural networks (e.g., numerical and real-time properties). Due to these exciting merits, they are promising in handling the traffic control problems which have strong nonlinear, stochastic and real-time characteristics. In this paper, a close look at two typical adaptive critic designs is conducted. Specifically, we demonstrate the use of a specific adaptive critic design for the local on-ramp metering control problem. Simulation results indicate that the proposed controller has good performance. © 2006 IEEE.

Collaborative tagging sites allow users to save and annotate their favorite web contents with tags. These tags provide a novel source of information for collaborative filtering. This paper proposes a probabilistic approach to leverage information embedded in tags to improve the effectiveness of Web page recommendation in a social information management context. In our approach, the probability of a Web page visit by a user is estimated by summing up the relevance of this Web page to this user's tags, and then those pages with the highest probabilities are recommended. Experiments using two real-world collaborative tagging datasets show that our algorithms outperform the common collaborative filtering methods. ©2009 IEEE.

Cultural modeling aims at developing behavioral models of groups and analyzing the impact of culture factors on group behavior using computational methods. Machine learning methods in particular classification, play a central role in such applications. In modeling cultural data, it is expected that standard classifiers yield good performance under the assumptions that class distribution is balanced and different classification errors have uniform costs. However, these assumptions are often violated in practice and thus the performance of standard classifiers is severely hindered. To handle this problem, this paper studies cost-sensitive learning in cultural modeling domain by considering cost factor when building the classifiers, with the aim of minimizing total misclassification costs. We empirically investigate four typical cost-sensitive learning methods, combine them with six standard classifiers and evaluate their performances under various conditions. Our empirical study verifies the effectiveness of cost-sensitive learning in cultural modeling. Based on the results of our experimental study, we gain a thorough insight into the problem of class imbalance and non-uniform misclassification costs, as well as the selection of cost-sensitive methods, base classifiers and method-classifier pairs for this domain.

Studying spatio-temporal evolution of epidemics can uncover important aspects of interaction among people, infectious diseases, and the environment, providing useful insights and modeling support to facilitate public health response and possibly prevention measures. This paper presents an empirical spatio-temporal analysis of epidemiological data concerning 2321 SARS-infected patients in Beijing in 2003. We mapped the SARS morbidity data with the spatial data resolution at the level of street and township. Two smoothing methods, Bayesian adjustment and spatial smoothing, were applied to identify the spatial risks and spatial transmission trends. Furthermore, we explored various spatial patterns and spatio-temporal evolution of Beijing 2003 SARS epidemic using spatial statistics such as Moran’s I and LISA. Part of this study is targeted at evaluating the effectiveness of public health control measures implemented during the SARS epidemic. The main findings are as follows. (1) The diffusion speed of SARS in the northwest-southeast direction is weaker than that in northeast-southwest direction. (2) SARS’s spread risk is positively spatially associated and the strength of this spatial association has experienced changes from weak to strong and then back to weak during the lifetime of the Beijing SARS epidemic. (3) Two spatial clusters of disease cases are identified: one in the city center and the other in the eastern suburban area. These two clusters followed different evolutionary paths but interacted with each other as well. (4) Although the government missed the opportunity to contain the early outbreak of SARS in March 2003, the response strategies implemented after the mid of April were effective. These response measures not only controlled the growth of the disease cases, but also mitigated the spatial diffusion.

Tracking control problem of mobile manipulators with dynamical uncertainties is addressed in this paper. The controller is designed based on model of mobile manipulators consisting of two cascaded subsystems: a chained-like kinematical model without uncertainties and a dynamical model with uncertainties. The proposed control law can ensure that full states of closed-loop system can track given trajectories in presence of dynamical uncertainties. A globally asymptotic stability is obtained in Lyapunov sense. Simulation studies show feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2005 IEEE.

A Novel Heterogeneous Actor-critic Algorithm with Recent Emphasizing Replay Memory

Reinforcement learning(RL) algorithms have been demonstrated to solve a variety of continuous control tasks. However,the training efficiency and performance of such methods limit further applications. In this paper, we propose an off-policy heterogeneous actor-critic(HAC) algorithm, which contains soft Q-function and ordinary Q-function. The soft Q-function encourages the exploration of a Gaussian policy, and the ordinary Q-function optimizes the mean of the Gaussian policy to improve the training efficiency. Experience replay memory is another vital component of off-policy RL methods. We propose a new sampling technique that emphasizes recently experienced transitions to boost the policy training. Besides, we integrate HAC with hindsight experience replay(HER) to deal with sparse reward tasks, which are common in the robotic manipulation domain. Finally, we evaluate our methods on a series of continuous control benchmark tasks and robotic manipulation tasks. The experimental results show that our method outperforms prior state-of-the-art methods in terms of training efficiency and performance, which validates the effectiveness of our method.

The problem of attitude control for a spacecraft model which is nonlinear in dynamics with inertia uncertainty and external disturbance is investigated in this paper. The extended state observer is applied to estimate the disturbance, by which a sliding mode controller is designed to force the state variables of the closed loop system to converge to the reference attitude states. Also, simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the control strategy. ©2010 IEEE.
