This paper introduces the Godson-T manycore architecture and demonstrates the efficiency of its synchronization mechanism through a computation intensive bioinformatics application: the comparison of protein banks. The parallel part of the protein sequence comparison algorithm can nearly get a linear speed-up thanks to a fine tuning of the synchronization mechanism provided by the Godson-T chip.

In order to provide high resource utilization and QoS assurance inutility computing hosting concurrently various services, this paper proposes aservice computing framework-RAINBOW for VM(Virtual Machine)-basedutility computing. In RAINBOW, we present a priority-based resourcescheduling scheme including resource flowing algorithms (RFaVM) to optimizeresource allocations amongst services. The principle of RFaVM is preferentiallyensuring performance of some critical services by degrading of others to someextent when resource competition arises. Based on our prototype, we evaluateRAINBOW and RFaVM. The experimental results show that RAINBOWwithout RFaVM provides 28%-324% improvements in service performance,and 26% higher the average CPU utilization than traditional service computingframework (TSF) in typical enterprise environment. RAINBOW with RFaVMfurther improves performance by 25%-42% for those critical services whileonly introducing up to 7% performance degradation to others, with 2%-8%more improvements in resource utilization than RAINBOW without RFaVM.

In current social computing system, not only hardware but also software experiences a directly discarded mode. Such directly discarded mode may result in huge waste. The major challenge in green computing is the recyclability of the computing system. In order to address this challenge in the software field, this paper proposes a design idea of green software embodying the adaptability and recyclability. The adaptable and recyclable strategy may consist of two phases. The first one is compressing the increasingly deeper software stack, another one is keeping the functionality recycling and code reuse. The adaptability and recyclability mean automatically decomposing the complex software into several parts which are ease to be reused and automatically selecting the feasible parts for the on-writing software. And we also explore the system software design path to adaptability and recyclability in our previous work as well as in the future.

Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) is one of the dominant CMOS aging mechanisms. It causes time-dependent variation, threatening circuit lifetime reliability. BTI-induced circuit errors are not detectable at the fabrication stage. On-line monitoring schemes are therefore necessary to capture the degradations during the operational time. Traditional aging monitoring techniques exhibit high implementation complexity and low stability. In this paper, we propose a BTI monitoring approach by simply tracking the start-up behavior of SRAM cells. SRAM is a widely used on-chip device in many applications. We study the impact of BTI for SRAM start-up values and age some cells in a manipulated manner. The BTI degradation is evaluated based on the number of SRAM cells starting with a certain value. This technique can be used to estimate the degradation for on-chip logic circuits without introducing additional circuitry, and thus has very low implementation complexity. We use an SRAM array with 1024 cells to estimate the degradations for multiple logic circuits, and show the average mean absolute percentage error as 8.48%. In addition, this technique is robust considering process, voltage and temperature variations.

Data Correlation-Aware Resource Management in Wireless Virtual Reality (VR): An Echo State Transfer Learning Approach

Providing seamless connectivity for wireless virtual reality (VR) users has emerged as a key challenge for future cloud-enabled cellular networks. In this paper, the problem of wireless VR resource management is investigated for a wireless VR network in which VR contents are sent by a cloud to cellular small base stations (SBSs). The SBSs will collect tracking data from the VR users, over the uplink, in order to generate the VR content and transmit it to the end-users using downlink cellular links. For this model, the data requested or transmitted by the users can exhibit correlation, since the VR users may engage in the same immersive virtual environment with different locations and orientations. As such, the proposed resource management framework can factor in such spatial data correlation, so as to better manage uplink and downlink traffic. This potential spatial data correlation can be factored into the resource allocation problem to reduce the traffic load in both uplink and downlink. In the downlink, the cloud can transmit 360 contents or specific visible contents (e.g., user field of view) that are extracted from the original 360 contents to the users according to the users' data correlation so as to reduce the backhaul traffic load. In the uplink, each SBS can associate with the users that have similar tracking information so as to reduce the tracking data size. This data correlation-Aware resource management problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to maximize the users' successful transmission probability, defined as the probability that the content transmission delay of each user satisfies an instantaneous VR delay target. To solve this problem, a machine learning algorithm that uses echo state networks (ESNs) with transfer learning is introduced. In this paper, the problem of data correlation-aware resource management is studied for a network of wireless virtual reality (VR) users communicating over cloud-based small cell networks (SCNs). In the studied model, small base stations (SBSs) with limited computational resources act as VR control centers that collect the tracking information from VR users over the cellular uplink and send them to the VR users over the downlink. In such a setting, VR users may send or request correlated or similar data (panoramic images and tracking data). This potential spatial data correlation can be factored into the resource allocation problem to reduce the traffic load in both uplink and downlink. This VR resource allocation problem is formulated as a noncooperative game that allows jointly optimizing the computational and spectrum resources, while being cognizant of the data correlation. To solve this game, a transfer learning algorithm based on the machine learning framework of echo state networks (ESNs) is proposed. Unlike conventional reinforcement learning algorithms that must be executed each time the environment changes, the proposed algorithm can intelligently transfer information on the learned utility, across time, to rapidly adapt to environmental dynamics due to factors such as changes in the users' content or data correlation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves up to 16.7% and 18.2% gains in terms of delay compared to the Q-learning with data correlation and Q-learning without data correlation. The results also show that the proposed algorithm has a faster convergence time than Q-learning and can guarantee low delays. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the problem of maximizing the sum rate of mobile users in a multi-base station (BS) cooperative millimeter-wave (mmWave) multicast communication system is studied. In the considered model, due to the real-time mobility of users, the users being served by a given BS and beamforming of BSs and users are dynamic. Multiple BSs must cooperate to serve dynamic requests of multiple mobile users. This problem is posed as an optimization framework whose goal is to maximize the sum rate of all mobile users by jointly optimizing the number of users served by all BSs and beamforming matrices of both BSs and users. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we first introduce a value decomposition based reinforcement learning (VD- RL) algorithm to determine the users to be served by each BS. Then, we use the block diagonalization method to obtain the fully digital transmit beamforming matrices of all BSs as well as the receive beamforming matrices of the users. Finally, a fast optimization algorithm is used to optimize the hybrid beamforming matrices of both BSs and users. Simulation results show that, the proposed algorithm can achieve up to 51 % gain in terms of the sum rate of all mobile users compared to baseline multi-agent algorithms.

Pakistan faces severe air pollution and high dependency on imported fossil fuels for transportation, urgently needing solutions. Electrification of transportation could address these issues, but Pakistan lacks a clear roadmap for adopting electric vehicles. This paper examines the electrification of transportation in Pakistan, focusing on policies, technical aspects, and standards. It looks at best practices from developed countries and discusses incentives offered by the Pakistani government to boost electric vehicle adoption. The study also explores challenges and opportunities in adopting electric vehicles within existing power systems. A SWOT analysis is included, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to electric vehicle policies and market integration in Pakistan. By reviewing these factors, the paper provides insights into the obstacles and potential benefits of electric vehicle adoption. It also suggests ways for developing nations like Pakistan to encourage widespread use of electric vehicles, aiming to reduce fossil fuel dependency and meet environmental goals. © 2024
