Compared with other conventional energy sources, renewable energy, which results in less pollution and has numerous resources, is a significant factor in addressing the current issues of the serious environmental pollution and the resource depletion. Large-scale renewable energy connected to the grid could lead to a the change of the morphological structure and the operation modes of energy transmission. While current power grid evolution models did not consider the characteristics of renewable energy in the evolution strategy. The expansion mechanism of the future transmission network with a high proportion of renewable energy is studied in this paper. The operation cost including renewable energy curtailment are optimized using the production simulations, where the stochastic and intermittent of wind and solar energy are modeled. And the dual variable information is adopted to drive the grid upgrading. The expansion strategies for power grid of Zhejiang province in China are analyzed to balance the construction cost and curtailment cost of renewable energy.

Distributed Energy Resources(DERs) will be an important part of the future power system under the spread of distributed renewable energy generation, electric vehicles, demand response and other technologies. Cyber-physical system (CPS) is one of the development directions for the future smart grid to integrate the widespread DERs. First, this paper presents the basic architecture and operation process of virtual power plant (VPP). Then the solution of communication structure and software platform are proposed. It is pointed out that virtual power plants have good applicability in information and communication infrastructure, power market and DER integration. Finally, a demonstration program in China is introduced. The research and application of virtual power plant is currently in its embryonic form. It provides a solution for the transmission from centralized power production to the distributed energy utilization, and is an adequate way to integrate geographical dispersion, heterogeneous DERs.

A dynamic multi-level temporal and spatial coordination method for orderly power utilization based on customer load curtailment cost characteristics

When there is power supply shortage or emergency event in power system, orderly power utilization needs to be applied to cut down electricity demand to maintain power supply for important electricity consumers. Current orderly power utilization fails to consider curtailment costs for different regions and customers, and ignores temporal continuity and production regularity of customer, leading to inefficient load curtailment scheduling. This paper proposes a dynamic multi-level temporal and spatial coordinated shortage allocation method considering customer load curtailment costs for orderly power utilization. Load curtailment cost function is established from individual customer level up to provincial electrical grid level. An optimization model is proposed to strategically rearrange customer load profiles across multiple periods. Case studies show that the method efficiently coordinates power shortage in temporal and spatial scale, and significantly brings down economic cost due to curtailment allocation. This model could help promote customer satisfaction level in orderly power utilization. © 2016, power System Technology Press. All right reserved.

Phase-locked loop (PLL) based on traditional second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) cannot obtain the voltage, frequency and phase information accurately when there are multiple harmonic interference and DC offset in grid voltage. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an improved PLL that can suppress harmonic and eliminate DC component to extract the synchronous signal accurately. First of all, based on the derivation of distorted grid voltage expression, the problem of fluctuation in extracting synchronous signal from three-phase unbalanced voltage with harmonic by traditional PLL is analyzed. Then, the design of improved PLL is proposed, which is composed of an improved second-order generalized integrator and a frequency correction component which can suppress harmonics and eliminate disturbances under the condition of grid voltage distortion, and has self-adaptability in large frequency offset. Determine the control parameters to ensure that the proposed PLL structure has a better rejection to harmonic distortion than previous approaches, and realize accurate tracking of grid fundamental frequency synchronization information. Finally, the behavior of the proposed system is verified with MATlab/Simulink simulation and Hardware-in-Loop Experimental Platform which prove the proposed PLL can realize the synchronous tracking performance of grid frequency and phase quickly and accurately in the non-ideal grid environment, and the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis.

With the development of energy industry and infor-mation technologies, the concept of energy Internet is proposed to prevent the energy crisis and reduce the environmental pollution. However, the planning of energy Internet is facing great challenges that there are large uncertainties of boundary conditions in the planning. The collection of Internet information can help solve the problem. This paper introduces the method of collecting objective data from the Internet, such as renewable energy sources data, climate data, and economic data, and the usage of the data for energy Internet planning. The method of collecting and processing fuzzy information from the Internet are introduced as well. The events related to the energy Internet planning can be perceived and be applied to the multi-scenario planning of energy Internet. Besides, the difficulties and outlooks of the usages are given.

High wind energy curtailment during winter and early spring in north China has drawn widespread concern in recent years, which, at source, results from the shortage of power system flexibility. Therefore, power system needs to consider the flexibility in planning stage. However, current flexibility metric is difficult to calculate and be applied in to the optimal planning. A non-sequential production simulation model with only input data of the cumulative probability function and/or probability density function of heat demand, electricity demand, and wind power is proposed, which is used to obtain the probability distribution of the production for generators according to least cost principle. Then the flexibility metric can be easily calculated based on the production results. simulations were performed based on the actual data of a large wind power zone in north China. Multiple flexibility metric was evaluated and compared with the wind power curtailment, which shows the strong correlation between them. Finally, the impact of flexible resources on the flexibility metric was analyzed.

Tertiary regulation of cascaded run-of-the-river hydropower in the islanded renewable power system considering multi-timescale dynamics

To enable power supply in rural areas and to exploit clean energy, fully renewable power systems consisting of cascaded run-of-the-river hydropower and volatile energies such as pv and wind are built around the world. In islanded operation mode, the primary and secondary frequency control, i.e., hydro governors and automatic generation control (AGC), are responsible for the frequency stability. However, due to limited water storage capacity of run-of-the-river hydropower and river dynamics constraints, without coordination between the cascaded plants, the traditional AGC with fixed participation factors cannot fully exploit the adjustability of cascaded hydropower. When imbalances between the volatile energy and load occur, load shedding can be inevitable. To address this issue, this paper proposes a coordinated tertiary control approach by jointly considering power system dynamics and the river dynamics that couples the cascaded hydropower plants. The timescales of the power system and river dynamics are very different. To unify the multi-timescale dynamics to establish a model predictive controller that coordinates the cascaded plants, the relation between AGC parameters and turbine discharge over a time interval is approximated by a data-based second-order polynomial surrogate model. The cascaded plants are coordinated by optimising AGC participation factors in a receding-horizon manner, and load shedding is minimised. simulation of a real-life system with real-time pv data collected on site shows the proposed method significantly reduces load loss under pv volatility. Identification of inactive constraints for SCED model considering uncertain power injection

With the constant expansion of power grid, a large number of security constraints have put tremendous challenges to the online economic dispatch. An efficient tool to eliminate the inactive constraints becomes necessary for security constraints economic dispatch (SCED) in large power systems. In this paper, considering the uncertainty of renewable energy integration, a fast and effective method to identify the inactive security constraints was proposed. Firstly, the definition of uncertain inactive security constraints and a necessary and sufficient condition to identify those were presented respectively. Considering the time-consuming identification, we relaxed the feasible region of original SCED model and utilized greedy algorithm to quickly eliminate part of inactive constraints. Then another necessary and sufficient condition was proposed and verified, where the remaining inactive constraints could be identified. Through the simulation of 24-time periods 9-bus system and 96-time periods IEEE 118-bus system, the speed and effectiveness of proposed method were verified. Moreover, the results can help dispatch operators to locate the transmission lines with the highest congestion risk. © 2014 Chin. Soc. for Elec. Eng.

This paper presents an adaptive sliding mode controller for the system of flexible load driven by motors with the damping and friction considered. The controller comprised the sliding mode controller and the Kalman estimator. Firstly, the parameter uncertainties and disturbance are modeled with a bounded variable and then an integral sliding surface is designed. Then, to relax the requirement for the bound of uncertainties, a Kalman state estimator is proposed to estimate the bound of uncertainties and the unmeasurable states. With the proposed control structure, the vibration caused by the flexibility can be suppressed and besides, the controller is robust to a wide range of parameter uncertainty and disturbance. The performance of the control strategy is verified via simulation and experimental results.
