With effective properties, a resistive-type superconducting fault current limit (R-SFCL) has become an effective device to restrain DC-side bipolar short fault currents in multilevel modular converter multiterminal DC systems (MMC-MTDCs). However, due to the resistance-energy accumulation-dependent characteristics of the R-SFCL device, the fault durations and different fault current values will produce various output resistances at each fault stage, and the related coordinated protection and control strategy needs to be adjusted accordingly. Therefore, in the first part of this paper, we analysed the DC side short circuit current mechanism and the fault current restraint characteristics of R-SFCLs. Subsequently, to verify the above analysis, the R-SFCL-based four-terminal MMC-MTDC with DC bipolar short fault modelling and simulation are presented in the next section. Finally, based on the above analysis and research, the advanced DC bipolar fault control and protection strategies of the R-SFCL-based MMC-MTDC system are discussed to promote further study of coordinated and protection control and the application of R-SFCLs in subsequent engineering applications. © 2021 IET Conference Proceedings. With the rapid development of distributed energy resources (DERs), it is of vital importance to develop a well-designed transmission cost allocation scheme to reflect the contributions of DERs to the power system. In this paper, a usage-based transmission cost allocation scheme is proposed considering the capability of DERs. Based on the different intentions of transmission capacity, the transmission costs can be classified into four fractions: operating, contingency, planning and invalid transmission costs. On operating conditions, the transmission costs are identified and allocated according to the actual usage of consumers at each node. On contingency conditions, the transmission cost allocation will be influenced by the behaviors of DERs since DERs can provide emergent power support to help alleviate transmission congestion. On planning conditions, the transmission costs are useful in the future. The residual costs, i.e., the invalid transmission costs, should not allocated by consumers because this fraction is caused by the over investment of transmission owners. The case studies based on the IEEE 30-bus system validates the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and model. © 2016, Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.

The large number of nonlinear loads used in urban metro rail traction grids distorts the voltage and current on the load side, then generates harmonics. The resulting capacitive characteristic harmonics current component provides feedback to the power grid, thus causing additional power losses and equipment damage. To solve this power quality problem, a detailed dynamic simulator of the metro traction power supply system is developed, which includes the corresponding 24-pulse rectifier and low-voltage power distribution system. Based on the established simulator, a study of the harmonic content and characteristics research of the 24-pulse rectifier and low-voltage electricity-consuming equipment are performed. In combination with the digital simulator, we presented and disused the lower-order frequency harmonic currents of the 35kV AC bus exhibiting capacitive characteristics. The results lay a technical foundation for harmonic equivalent impedance calculation and harmonic current suppression of the metro traction power supply system. © ACDC 2022. All rights reserved.

Conventional steady-state security analysis have to compute the faults belonging to the predefined faults set in turn with out considering the small probability of the occurrence of some faults under certain circumstances. Although its results reflect the violation of the components precisely, they can not figure out how the violation affects the security of the system. The steady-state security analysis based on the operational reliability theory applies the state-depended models of the components in order to find the faults which would happen with high probability. As a result, only these faults should be calculated to decrease the computation time considerably. Further more, the reliability indices indicate the probability of the violation of the component as well as the influence of the violation on the system security, so that the security of the system can be evaluated comprehensively. IEEE RTS-79 test system is adopted in this paper to illustrate the differences between the conventional and the new steady-state security analysis methods. By contrast, it can be concluded that steady-state security analysis based on the operational reliability theory can calculate the influence of the variation of the component failure probability on the system security more specifically, which making the evaluation results more close to the practical operating system Copyright © 2009 by International Academic Publishers Ltd.

According to the characteristics of the cascading failures in power grid, a lot of assessment methods based on the probability theory have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them ignore the influence of the changing operating conditions on the power system planning and operation. This paper assesses the risk of the cascading failure in the power system based on the operational reliability theory which considering the variation of operating states and environment of the power system. The operational reliability of the power system is calculated based on Markov Process which describes the transient probability of states. The key conception of this theory is that the failure rate and the probability of components are changing along with the life of the equipment, the operating states and the environment conditions. A new evaluation procedure is brought up to calculate the operational reliability indices which can provide the specific information of the cascading failure. The evaluating results of the test system confirm that this approach is applicable to analyze the cascading failures in real power system. ©2010 IEEE.

In recent years, with the development of smart grid technologies, wind turbines, photovoltaics and other renewable energy sources as well as demand-side loads have participated in grid dispatching, resulting in increased complexity of energy flows in the grid. Distributed energy resources (DERs) differ in many dimensions, such as technical attributes, operating modes, and business objectives, and its management authority also belongs to different entities, making it more difficult for grids to manage DERs. A management mode, virtual power plant (VPP), being enabled by information and communication technology, could effectively overcome the challenges with decentralized DERs and help realize the aggregation of DERs. In this paper, the interaction between customers and VPP is modeled, where VPP divides the owners of DERs into three categories according to the willingness and responsiveness of customers and balances budget costs and risks based on the modern portfolio theory. simulation with the CIGRE 20kV distribution network benchmark demonstrates that VPP could greatly meet the power consumption demand of multiple participants during operation. Obtaining the lightning strike density along an overhead transmission line and identifying the lightning strike types are the key to evaluating the lightning protection performance and proposing reasonable protection schemes of transmission lines. In addition, the waveform characteristics of lightning invasion overvoltage are the basis to establish the standard on the insulation tests of power equipment. Measuring the transient process of lightning striking overhead transmission lines is the basis to carry out the work mentioned above. In this paper, a distributed measurement method of transient current on conductors caused by lightning strikes is proposed. The measuring units are installed on the field conductors of transmission lines every 30 km to obtain less-distorted transient current waveforms. In order to enable measuring units to work in field isolated environment, a power supply coil using Faraday electric-magnetic effect and a wireless communication module is designed and developed. By far, 4776 measuring units have been installed on 597 transmission lines of China's power grid. According to measured transient current waveforms, the lightning strike point can be located using the double-end or single-end travelling wave location method, and the lightning strike type can also be identified. Moreover, a novel measurement method of lightning transient voltage based on the integrated optical electric field sensor (IOEFS) is proposed. In this method, the transient voltage waveforms are inversed from space electric field waveforms measured by IOEFSs. A series of performance tests of IOEFS have been carried out. The test results indicate that the response speed can reach several nanoseconds, and the frequency response can cover 5Hz∼100MHz which is wide enough for the measurement of the lightning transient voltage. Current risk assessment ignores the stochastic nature of energy storage availability itself and thus lead to potential risk during operation. This paper proposes the redefinition of generic energy storage (GES) that is allowed to offer probabilistic reserve. A data-driven unified model with exogenous and endogenous uncertainty (EXU & EDU) description is presented for four typical types of GES. Moreover, risk indices are proposed to assess the impact of overlooking (EXU & EDU) of GES. Comparative results between EXU & EDU are illustrated in distribution system with day-ahead chance-constrained optimization (CCO) and more severe risks are observed for the latter, which indicate that system operator (SO) should adopt novel strategies for EDU uncertainty. © 2022 IEEE.
