Newton's algorithm for constructing univariate interpolation polynomial is well-known. In this paper, we generalize Newton's formula to multivariate Lagrange interpolation. For some type of subset ΧL, so-called lower subset, of a tensor product grid, we present directly an interpolation basis of Newton type which spans a minimal degree interpolation space for Lagrange interpolation on ΧL. We show that this basis is always a Newton interpolation basis for arbitrary ordered set of point evaluation functionals.

The integration of database and information retrieval techniques provides users with a wide range of high quality services. We present a prototype system, called NUITS, for efficiently processing keyword queries on top of a relational database. Our NUITS allows users to issue simple keyword queries as well as advanced keyword queries with conditions. The efficiency of keyword query processing and the user-friendly result display will also be addressed in this paper.

Recently, ontology learning is emerging as a new hotspot of research in computer science. In this paper the issue of ontology learning is divided into nine sub-issues according to the structured degree (structured, semi-structured, non-structured) of source data and learning objects (concept, relation, axiom) of ontology. The characteristics, major approaches and the latest research progress of the nine sub-issues are summarized. Based on the analysis framework proposed in the paper, existing ontology learning tools are introduced and compared. The problems of current research are discussed, and finally the future directions are pointed out.

Poyang Lake watershed mainly consists of Poyang Lake and its five sub-watersheds. Its wetlands, the largest bird habitat in Asia, play an important role in biodiversity and ecologic protection. With the rapid economic growth and urbanization, the wetlands in Poyang Lake area have been shrinking and face many environmental challenges. To better understand the environmental and ecologic changes of wetlands in the Poyang Lake watersheds, we applied RS/GIS techniques and a mathematical model in a study of the relationship between land use/cover changes and sediment load of the Poyang Lake watershed. RS classification was used to detect the land use/cover change, and a relational searching algorithm of spatial objects was proposed to improve the classification accuracy of wetlands. The driving forces for the land use/cover change were also analyzed. Soil erosion by water, as a big environmental problem, reflects the process of surface water related to non - point source pollution that influences water quality, the environment, and ecology of wetlands. In this study GIS and RS technologies are employed to predict annual soil loss. This work prioritizes erosion-prone areas which are important sources of sediment and highlights the severity of soil erosion in the watershed. SSC (suspended sediment concentration) data were collected for the study period. The relationships among land use/cover change, erosion area variations and SSC alterations are examined for the study period. The results show that the land use/cover change in the watershed lessen sediment sources and led to less SSC load to the wetland. The Poyang Lake is less impacted by the SSC in 2000 compared with 1991.

The effort to personalise eLearning has led to the development of sophisticated Adaptive Hypermedia (AH) systems that can adapt to many aspects of the learner's characteristics or explicit preferences. However, while many of these adaptations are grounded in sound pedagogical theories, it is unclear how effective such adaptations are in supporting everyday teaching and learning processes that take place in the classroom today. This paper presents a study that explores what teachers in the UK, who have been named by their colleagues as implementing best-practice in the classroom, expect from an eLearning platform that can adapt to the individual needs of their students. The result of the study shows that there are currently some discrepancies between the teachers' expectations and what adaptive hypermedia currently offers. The paper then concludes by describing how these discrepancies can be addressed in future AH systems.

This paper proposes a novel approach in integrating seemingly contradictory approaches of teaching and learning via collaborative and personalised learning activities by using augmented reality museum exhibits. The paper highlights the benefits that computer supported collaborative learning and computer supported personalised learning bring or promise to bring to the learner. A proposal is given for a study that will setup a common ground for these two approaches via a location-aware augmented reality museum display. The principal aim of the study is to investigate how the process of learning collaboratively is intertwined with personalised experience of visiting the museum display. Ultimately, the result of the study will provide a new understanding of visitor's experience of museum displays, not only within the context of the museum's location, but also within the classroom where the visit truly begins and finishes.
