Human-level diagnostic performance from intelligent systems often depends on large set of training data. However, the amount of available data for model training may be limited for part of diseases, which would cause the widely adopted deep learning models not generalizing well. One alternative simple approach to small class prediction is the traditional k-nearest neighbor (kNN). However, due to the non-parametric characteristics of kNN, it is difficult to combine the kNN classification into the learning of feature extractor. This paper proposes an end-to-end learning strategy to unify the kNN classification and the feature extraction procedure. The basic idea is to enforce that each training sample and its K nearest neighbors belong to the same class during learning the feature extractor. Experiments on multiple small-class and class-imbalanced medical image datasets showed that the proposed deep kNN outperforms both kNN and other strong classifiers. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

LadRa-Net: Locally-aware dynamic re-read attention net for sentence semantic matching

Sentence semantic matching requires an agent to determine the semantic relation between two sentences, which is widely used in various natural language tasks, such as Natural Language Inference (NLI), Paraphrase Identification (PI), and so on. Much recent progress has been made in this area, especially attention-based methods and pre-trained language model based methods. However, most of these methods focus on all the important parts in sentences in a static way and only emphasize how important the words are to the query, inhibiting the ability of attention mechanism. In order to overcome this problem and boost the performance of attention mechanism, we propose a novel dynamic re-read attention, which can pay close attention to one small region of sentences at each step and re-read the important parts for better sentence representations. Based on this attention variation, we develop a novel Dynamic Re-read Network (DRr-Net) for sentence semantic matching. Moreover, selecting one small region in dynamic re-read attention seems insufficient for sentence semantics, and employing pre-trained language models as input encoders will introduce incomplete and fragile representation problems. To this end, we extend DRr-Net to Locally-Aware Dynamic Re-read Attention Net (LadRa-Net), in which local structure of sentences is employed to alleviate the shortcoming of Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) in pre-trained language models and boost the performance of dynamic reread attention. Extensive experiments on two popular sentence semantic matching tasks demonstrate that DRr-Net can significantly improve the performance of sentence semantic matching. Meanwhile, LadRa-Net is able to achieve better performance by considering the local structures of sentences. Recent progress in material data mining has been driven by high-capacity models trained on large ***,collecting experimental data(real data)has been extremely costly owing to the amount of human effort and expertise ***,we develop a novel transfer learning strategy to address problems of small or insufficient *** strategy realizes the fusion of real and simulated data and the augmentation of training data in a data mining *** a specific task of grain instance image segmentation,this strategy aims to generate synthetic data by fusing the images obtained from simulating the physical mechanism of grain formation and the“image style”information in real *** results show that the model trained with the acquired synthetic data and only 35%of the real data can already achieve competitive segmentation performance of a model trained on all of the real *** the time required to perform grain simulation and to generate synthetic data are almost negligible as compared to the effort for obtaining real data,our proposed strategy is able to exploit the strong prediction power of deep learning without significantly increasing the experimental burden of training data preparation.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) has emerged as a widely accepted diagnostic instrument for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The standard clinical 12-lead ECG configuration causes considerable inconvenience and discomfort, while wearable devices offers a more practical alternative. To reduce information gap between 12-lead ECG and single-lead ECG, this study proposes a multi-channel masked autoencoder (MCMA) for reconstructing 12-Lead ECG from arbitrary single-lead ECG, and a comprehensive evaluation benchmark, ECGGenEval, encompass the signal-level, feature-level, and diagnostic-level evaluations. MCMA can achieve the state-of-the-art performance. In the signal-level evaluation, the mean square errors of 0.0317 and 0.1034, Pearson correlation coefficients of 0.7885 and 0.7420. In the feature-level evaluation, the average standard deviation of the mean heart rate across the generated 12-lead ECG is 1.0481, the coefficient of variation is 1.58%, and the range is 3.2874. In the diagnostic-level evaluation, the average F1-score with two generated 12-lead ECG from different single-lead ECG are 0.8233 and 0.8410. © 2024, CC BY.

Object pose detection and tracking has recently attracted increasing attention due to its wide applications in many areas, such as autonomous driving, robotics, and augmented reality. Among methods for object pose detection and tracking, deep learning is the most promising one that has shown better performance than others. However, survey study about the latest development of deep learning-based methods is lacking. Therefore, this study presents a comprehensive review of recent progress in object pose detection and tracking that belongs to the deep learning technical route. To achieve a more thorough introduction, the scope of this study is limited to methods taking monocular RGB/RGBD data as input and covering three kinds of major tasks: instance-level monocular object pose detection, category-level monocular object pose detection, and monocular object pose tracking. In our work, metrics, datasets, and methods of both detection and tracking are presented in detail. Comparative results of current state-of-the-art methods on several publicly available datasets are also presented, together with insightful observations and inspiring future research directions. Chest radiography is widely used in annual medical screening to check whether lungs are healthy or not. Therefore it would be desirable to develop an intelligent system to help clinicians automatically detect potential abnormalities in chest X-ray images. Here with only healthy X-ray images, we propose a new abnormality detection approach based on an autoencoder which outputs not only the reconstructed normal version of the input image but also a pixel-wise uncertainty prediction. Higher uncertainty often appears at normal region boundaries with relatively larger reconstruction errors, but not at potential abnormal regions in the lung area. Therefore the normalized reconstruction error by the uncertainty provides a natural measurement for abnormality detection in images. Experiments on two chest X-ray datasets show the state-of-the-art performance by the proposed approach. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is beginning with amyloidosis, followed by neuronal loss and deterioration in structure, function, and cognition. The accumulation of amyloid-β in the brain, measured through 18F-florbetapir (AV45) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, has been widely used for early diagnosis of AD. However, the relationship between amyloid-β accumulation and AD pathophysiology remains unclear, and causal inference approaches are needed to uncover how amyloid-β levels can impact AD development. In this paper, we propose a graph varying coefficient neural network (GVCNet) for estimating the individual treatment effect with continuous treatment levels using a graph convolutional neural network. We highlight the potential of causal inference approaches, including GVCNet, for measuring the regional causal connections between amyloid-β accumulation and AD pathophysiology, which may serve as a robust tool for early diagnosis and tailored care. © 2023, CC BY.

Feature re-learning with data augmentation for video relevance prediction

Predicting the relevance between two given videos with respect to their visual content is a key component for content-based video recommendation and retrieval. Thanks to the increasing availability of pre-trained image and video convolutional neural network models, deep visual features are widely used for video content representation. However, as how two videos are relevant is task-dependent, such off-the-shelf features are not always optimal for all tasks. Moreover, due to varied concerns including copyright, privacy and security, one might have access to only pre-computed video features rather than original videos. We propose in this paper feature re-learning for improving video relevance prediction, with no need of revisiting the original video content. In particular, re-learning is realized by projecting a given deep feature into a new space by an affine transformation. We optimize the re-learning process by a novel negative-enhanced triplet ranking loss. In order to generate more training data, we propose a new data augmentation strategy which works directly on frame-level and video-level features. Extensive experiments in the context of the Hulu Content-based Video Relevance Prediction Challenge 2018 justify the effectiveness of the proposed method and its state-of-the-art performance for content-based video relevance prediction.
