False claims that have been previously fact-checked can still spread on social media. To mitigate their continual spread, detecting previously fact-checked claims is indispensable. Given a claim, existing works retrieve fact-checking articles (FC-articles) for detection and focus on reranking candidate articles in the typical two-stage retrieval framework. However, their performance may be limited as they ignore the following characteristics of FC-articles: (1) claims are often quoted to describe the checked events, providing lexical information besides semantics;and (2) sentence templates to introduce or debunk claims are common across articles, providing pattern information. In this paper, we propose a novel reranker, MTM (Memoryenhanced Transformers for Matching), to rank FC-articles using key sentences selected using event (lexical and semantic) and pattern information. For event information, we propose to finetune the Transformer with regression of ROUGE. For pattern information, we generate pattern vectors as a memory bank to match with the parts containing patterns. By fusing event and pattern information, we select key sentences to represent an article and then predict if the article fact-checks the given claim using the claim, key sentences, and patterns. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that MTM outperforms existing methods. Human evaluation proves that MTM can capture key sentences for explanations. Semantic Role labeling (SRL) aims at recognizing the predicate-argument structure of a sentence and can be decomposed into two sub-tasks: predicate disambiguation and argument labeling. Prior work deals with these two tasks independently, which ignores the semantic connection between the two tasks. In this paper, we propose to use the machine reading comprehension (MRC) framework to bridge this gap. We formalize predicate disambiguation as multiple-choice machine reading comprehension, where the descriptions of candidate senses of a given predicate are used as options to select the correct sense. The chosen predicate sense is then used to determine the semantic roles for that predicate, and these semantic roles are used to construct the query for another MRC model for argument labeling. In this way, we are able to leverage both the predicate semantics and the semantic role semantics for argument labeling. We also propose to select a subset of all the possible semantic roles for computational efficiency. Experiments show that the proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art or comparable results to previous work. The ubiquitousness of GPS sensors in smart-phones, vehicles and wearable devices has enabled the collection of massive volumes of trajectory data from tracing moving objects. Consequently, an unprecedented scale of timestamped GPS data has been generated and posed an urgent demand for an effective storage mechanism for trajectory databases. The mainstream compression technique is called trajectory simplification, that finds a subsequence to approximate the original trajectory and attempts to minimize the information loss under a distance measure. Even though various simplification algorithms have been proposed in the past decades, there still lacks a thorough comparison to cover all the state-of-the-art algorithms and evaluate their quality using datasets in diversified motion patterns. Hence, it still remains a challenge for GPS data collectors to determine a proper algorithm in a concrete application. In addition, almost the entire line of previous methods uses error-based metrics to evaluate the compression quality, while ignoring their usability in supporting spatio-temporal queries on top of the reduced database. To bridge these gaps, we conduct so far the most comprehensive evaluation on trajectory simplification techniques. We compare the performance of 25 algorithms in total using five real datasets in different motion patterns. According to the experimental findings, we present useful guidance for the selection or development of effective trajectory simplification algorithms. © VLDB Endowment 21508097/18/05

Recently there has been a lot of interest in graph-based analysis. One of the most important aspects of graph-based analysis is to measure similarity between nodes in a graph. SimRank is a simple and influential measure of this kind, based on a solid graph theoretical model. However, existing methods on SimRank computation suffer from two limitations: 1) the computing cost can be very high in practice;and 2) they can only be applied on static graphs. In this paper, we exploit the inherent parallelism and high memory bandwidth of graphics processing units (GPU) to accelerate the computation of SimRank on large graphs. Furthermore, based on the observation that SimRank is essentially a first-order Markov Chain, we propose to utilize the iterative aggregation techniques for uncoupling Markov chains to compute SimRank scores in parallel for large graphs. The iterative aggregation method can be applied on dynamic graphs. Moreover, it can handle not only the link-updating problem but also the node-updating problem. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real data sets verify that the proposed methods are efficient and effective. © 2010 ACM.

Sequential pattern mining is an important problem in continuous, fast, dynamic and unlimited stream mining. Recently approximate mining algorithms are proposed which spend too many system resources and can only obtain the partial feature of stream. In this paper, a multi-level evolving sequential pattern mining model ESPMM is presented to address this problem thus the mostly entire stream feature is obtained. Furthermore, because of the smaller support of sequential patterns in each level, a mining method BMLA based on Levenshtein-Automata is proposed which builds state conversion model to compute sequences' similarity in linear time. The experiment results show this model is effective and efficient.

In this paper, we present a system called CRO (Chinese Review Observer) for online product review structurization. By Structurization, we mean identifying, extracting and summarizing information from unstructured review text to a structured table. The core tasks include review collection, product feature and user opinion extraction, and polarity analysis of opinions. Existing research in this area is mainly English text oriented. To deal with Chinese effectively, we propose several novel approaches for fulfilling the core tasks. Then we integrated these approaches and implement the whole procedure of review structurization in the system CRO. Running results for reviews of real products show its performance is satisfactory.

Point cloud-based large scale place recognition is an important but challenging task for many applications such as Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Taking the task as a point cloud retrieval problem, previous methods have made delightful achievements. However, how to deal with catastrophic collapse caused by rotation problems is still under-explored. In this paper, to tackle the issue, we propose a novel Point Cloud-based Rotation-aware Large Scale Place Recognition Network (RPR-Net). In particular, to solve the problem, we propose to learn rotation-invariant features in three steps. First, we design three kinds of novel Rotation-Invariant Features (RIFs), which are low-level features that can hold the rotation-invariant property. Second, using these RIFs, we design an attentive module to learn rotation-invariant kernels. Third, we apply these kernels to previous point cloud features to generate new features, which is the well-known SO(3) mapping process. By doing so, high-level scene-specific rotation-invariant features can be learned. We call the above process an Attentive Rotation-Invariant Convolution (ARIConv). To achieve the place recognition goal, we build RPR-Net, which takes ARIConv as a basic unit to construct a dense network architecture. Then, powerful global descriptors used for retrieval-based place recognition can be sufficiently extracted from RPR-Net. Experimental results on prevalent datasets show that our method achieves comparable results to existing state-of-the-art place recognition models and significantly outperforms other rotation-invariant baseline models when solving rotation problems. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

DCFl-Checker： Checking Kernel Dynamic Control Flow Integrity with Performance Monitoring Counter

It is a challenge to verify integrity of dynamic control flows due to their dynamic and volatile nature. To meet the challenge, existing solutions usually implant an ＂attachment＂ in each control transfer. However, the attachment introduces additional cost except performance penalty. For example, the attachment must be unique or restrictedly modified. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to detect integrity of dynamic control flows by counting executed branch instructions without involving any attachment. Our solution is based on the following observation. If a control flow is compromised, the number of executed branch instructions will be abnormally increased. The cause is that intruders usually hijack control flows for malicious execution which absolutely introduces additional branch instructions. Inspired by the above observation, in this paper, we devise a novel system named DCFI- Checker, which detect integrity corruption of dynamic control flows with the support of Performance Monitoring Counter （PMC）. We have developed a proof-of-concept prototype system of DCFI-Checker on Linux fedora 5. Our experiments with existing kemel rootkits and buffer overflow attack show that DCFI- Checker is effective to detect compromised dynamic control transfer, and performance evaluations indicate that performance penaltyinduced by DCFI-Checker is acceptable.

Hadoop is now the de facto standard for storing and processing big data, not only for unstructured data but also for some structured data. As a result, providing SQL analysis functionality to the big data resided in HDFS becomes more and more important. Hive is a pioneer system that support SQL-like analysis to the data in HDFS. However, the performance of Hive is not satisfactory for many applications. This leads to the quick emergence of dozens of SQL-on-Hadoop systems that try to support interactive SQL query processing to the data stored in HDFS. This paper firstly gives a brief technical review on recent efforts of SQLon- Hadoop systems. Then we test and compare the performance of five representative SQL-on-Hadoop systems, based on some queries selected or derived from the TPC-DS benchmark. According to the results, we show that such systems can benefit more from the applications of many parallel query processing techniques that have been widely studied in the traditional MPP analytical databases. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In update intensive applications, main memory database systems produce large volume of log records, it is critical to write out the log records efficiently to speedup transaction processing. We propose a parallel recovery scheme based on XOR differential logging for main memory database systems in such environments. Some NVRAM is used to temporarily hold log records and decouple transaction committing from disk writes, inherited parallelism properties of differential logging are exploited to accelerate log flushing by using multiple log disks. During recovery, log records are loaded from multiple log disks and applied to data partition in time without the need of reordering according to serialization order, total recovery time is cut down. The scheme employs a data partition based consistent checkpointing method. The log records are classified according to IDs of data partitions accessed. data partitions are recovered according to loading priorities computed from update frequencies and transaction waiting times, data access demands of new transactions coming after failure recovery are given attention immediately, thus the scheme provides system availability during recovery, which is of importance for large scale main memory database systems.
