Semantic Role labeling (SRL) aims at recognizing the predicate-argument structure of a sentence and can be decomposed into two sub-tasks: predicate disambiguation and argument labeling. Prior work deals with these two tasks independently, which ignores the semantic connection between the two tasks. In this paper, we propose to use the machine reading comprehension (MRC) framework to bridge this gap. We formalize predicate disambiguation as multiple-choice machine reading comprehension, where the descriptions of candidate senses of a given predicate are used as options to select the correct sense. The chosen predicate sense is then used to determine the semantic roles for that predicate, and these semantic roles are used to construct the query for another MRC model for argument labeling. In this way, we are able to leverage both the predicate semantics and the semantic role semantics for argument labeling. We also propose to select a subset of all the possible semantic roles for computational efficiency. Experiments show that the proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art or comparable results to previous work. Charge prediction aims to predict the final charge for a case according to its fact description and plays an important role in legal assistance systems. With deep learning based methods, prediction on high-frequency charges has achieved promising results but that on few-shot charges is still challenging. In this work, we propose a framework with multi-grained features and mutual information for few-shot charge prediction. Specifically, we extract coarse- and fine-grained features to enhance the model’s capability on representation, based on which the few-shot charges can be better distinguished. Furthermore, we propose a loss function based on mutual information. This loss function leverages the prior distribution of the charges to tune their weights, so the few-shot charges can contribute more on model optimization. Experimental results on several datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method. Besides, our method can work well on tiny datasets and has better efficiency in the training, which provides better applicability in real scenarios. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Semi-Supervised Learning (SSL) under class distribution mismatch aims to tackle a challenging problem wherein unlabeled data contain lots of unknown categories unseen in the labeled ones. In such mismatch scenarios, traditional SSL suffers severe performance damage due to the harmful invasion of the instances with unknown categories into the target classifier. In this study, by strict mathematical reasoning, we reveal that the SSL error under class distribution mismatch is composed of pseudo-labeling error and invasion error, both of which jointly bound the SSL population risk. To alleviate the SSL error, we propose a robust SSL framework called Weight-Aware Distillation (WAD) that, by weights, selectively transfers knowledge beneficial to the target task from unsupervised contrastive representation to the target classifier. Specifically, WAD captures adaptive weights and high-quality pseudo-labels to target instances by exploring point mutual information (PMI) in representation space to maximize the role of unlabeled data and filter unknown categories. Theoretically, we prove that WAD has a tight upper bound of population risk under class distribution mismatch. Experimentally, extensive results demonstrate that WAD outperforms five state-of-the-art SSL approaches and one standard baseline on two benchmark datasets, CIFAR10 and CIFAR100, and an artificial cross-dataset. In this paper, we present a system called CRO (Chinese Review Observer) for online product review structurization. By Structurization, we mean identifying, extracting and summarizing information from unstructured review text to a structured table. The core tasks include review collection, product feature and user opinion extraction, and polarity analysis of opinions. Existing research in this area is mainly English text oriented. To deal with Chinese effectively, we propose several novel approaches for fulfilling the core tasks. Then we integrated these approaches and implement the whole procedure of review structurization in the system CRO. Running results for reviews of real products show its performance is satisfactory.

False claims that have been previously fact-checked can still spread on social media. To mitigate their continual spread, detecting previously fact-checked claims is indispensable. Given a claim, existing works retrieve fact-checking articles (FC-articles) for detection and focus on reranking candidate articles in the typical two-stage retrieval framework. However, their performance may be limited as they ignore the following characteristics of FC-articles: (1) claims are often quoted to describe the checked events, providing lexical information besides semantics;and (2) sentence templates to introduce or debunk claims are common across articles, providing pattern information. In this paper, we propose a novel reranker, MTM (Memoryenhanced Transformers for Matching), to rank FC-articles using key sentences selected using event (lexical and semantic) and pattern information. For event information, we propose to finetune the Transformer with regression of ROUGE. For pattern information, we generate pattern vectors as a memory bank to match with the parts containing patterns. By fusing event and pattern information, we select key sentences to represent an article and then predict if the article fact-checks the given claim using the claim, key sentences, and patterns. Experiments on two real-world datasets show that MTM outperforms existing methods. Human evaluation proves that MTM can capture key sentences for explanations. The ubiquitousness of GPS sensors in smart-phones, vehicles and wearable devices has enabled the collection of massive volumes of trajectory data from tracing moving objects. Consequently, an unprecedented scale of timestamped GPS data has been generated and posed an urgent demand for an effective storage mechanism for trajectory databases. The mainstream compression technique is called trajectory simplification, that finds a subsequence to approximate the original trajectory and attempts to minimize the information loss under a distance measure. Even though various simplification algorithms have been proposed in the past decades, there still lacks a thorough comparison to cover all the state-of-the-art algorithms and evaluate their quality using datasets in diversified motion patterns. Hence, it still remains a challenge for GPS data collectors to determine a proper algorithm in a concrete application. In addition, almost the entire line of previous methods uses error-based metrics to evaluate the compression quality, while ignoring their usability in supporting spatio-temporal queries on top of the reduced database. To bridge these gaps, we conduct so far the most comprehensive evaluation on trajectory simplification techniques. We compare the performance of 25 algorithms in total using five real datasets in different motion patterns. According to the experimental findings, we present useful guidance for the selection or development of effective trajectory simplification algorithms. © VLDB Endowment 21508097/18/05

Discovering the relationship between protein sequence pattern and protein secondary structure is important for accurately predicting secondary structure of protein sequence. A protein secondary structure pattern dictionary is constructed using protein sequence pattern and its corresponding secondary structure in this paper. Based on the constructed dictionary, we propose four effect factors on secondary structure of protein sequence pattern, including 1) the core pattern itself;2) patterns or amino acid residues that neighbor with the core pattern;3) patterns or amino acid residues that are far away from the core pattern;and 4) amino acid sequence segment that match the core pattern. Statistical measures are adopted to analyze these factors. The experimental result shows the reliability of these factors. The recognition of these effect factors presents new directions to predict protein secondary structure based on protein pattern dictionary. © 2011 IEEE.

Reverse Skyline Queries have been proved very useful in business location, environmental monitoring and some other applications. In this paper, we consider reverse skyline queries processing on data stream, which provides continuous, high-speed data elements. Specifically, we consider the latest objects in the sliding window. The challenge is that it is difficult to maintain a multidimensional index (for example, R-tree) in a dynamic dataset. Focusing on this challenge, we propose an algorithm with a DC-Tree as index and effective pruning methods to reduce the search space of query processing and the cost of index maintaining. Extensive experiments show that our algorithms are efficient and effective for on-line reverse skyline query.

An emerging topic in multimedia retrieval is to detect a complex event in video using only a handful of video examples. Different from existing work which learns a ranker from positive video examples and hundreds of negative examples, we aim to query web video for events using zero or only a few visual examples. To that end, we propose in this paper a tag-based video retrieval system which propagates tags from a tagged video source to an unlabeled video collection without the need of any training examples. Our algorithm is based on weighted frequency neighbor voting using concept vector similarity. Once tags are propagated to unlabeled video we can rely on off-the-shelf language models to rank these videos by the tag similarity. We study the behavior of our tag-based video event retrieval system by performing three experiments on web videos from the TRECVID multimedia event detection corpus, with zero, one and multiple query examples that beats a recent alternative.
