In this paper, by strict mathematic reasoning, we discover the relation between the similarity relation and lower approximation. Based on this relation, we design a fast algorithm to build a rule based fuzzy rough classifier. Finally, the numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency and the affectivity of the proposed algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Feature selection is a powerful tool of dimension reduction from datasets. In the last decade, more and more researchers have paid attentions on feature selection. Further, some researchers begin to focus on feature selection from probabilistic datasets. However, in the existing method of feature selection from probabilistic data, the distance hidden in probabilistic data is neglected. In this paper, we design a new distance measure to select informative feature from probabilistic databases, in which both the distance and randomness in the data are considered. And then, we propose a feature selection algorithm based on the new distance and develop two accelerative algorithms to boost the computation. Furthermore, we introduce a parameter into the distance to reduce the sensitivity to noise. Finally, the experimental results verify the effectiveness of our algorithms. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

As the memory capacity increases and the hardware becomes cheaper, main memory databases (MMDB) have come true and been used in more and more applications, because they can provide better response time and throughputs. The advent of MMDB requires a reconsideration of data structures and algorithms of traditional DBMS. The index structure is one of the most important aspects that need be redesigned since it can affect the overall system performance heavily. Even though the T-tree index, which was proposed for main memory databases, has been widely accepted as a promising index structure. B+-tree and its variants still have their advantages in memory and are also regarded as the potential main memory database index structures. In this paper, we propose a new indexing technique called J+-tree for MMDB, inspired by the Judy structure which is an associative array data structure. Our J+-tree index not only holds the advantages of Judy (such as good single value search characteristic) but also outperforms it in many ways. For example, J +-tree can obtain better performance for range queries that are very slow in Judy structure. We compare the J+-tree index with Judy, T-tree and B+-tree on time and space aspects, and the experimental results show that J+-tree can provide better overall performance in main memory. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Classification is an important subject in data mining and machine learning, which has been studied extensively and has a wide range of applications. Classification based on association rules is one of the most effective classification method, whose accuracy is higher and discovered rules are easier to understand comparing with classical classification methods. However, current algorithms for classification based on association rules is single table oriented, which means they can only apply to the data stored in a single relational table. Directly applying these algorithms in multi-relational data environment will result in many problems. This paper proposes a novel algorithm MrCAR for classification based on association rules in multi-relational data environment. MrCAR mines relevant features in each table to predict the class label. Close itemsets technique and Tuple ID Propagation method are used to improve the performance of the algorithm. Experimental results show that MrCAR has higher accuracy and better understandability comparing with a typical existing multirelational classification algorithm.

Quality aware privacy protection for location-based services

Protection of users' privacy has been a central issue for location-based services (LBSs). In this paper, we classify two kinds of privacy protection requirements in LBS: location anonymity and identifier anonymity. While the location cloaking technique under the k-anonymity model can provide a good protection of users' privacy, it reduces the resolution of location information and, hence, may degrade the quality of service (QoS). To strike a balance between the location privacy and QoS, we present a quality-aware anonymity model for protecting location privacy while meeting user specified QoS requirements. In the model, a mobile user can specify the minimum anonymity level requirement upon location privacy as well as the maximum cloaking latency and the maximum cloaking region size requirements upon QoS. In accordance with the model, we develop an efficient directed-graph based cloaking algorithm to achieve both high-quality location anonymity and identifier anonymity. The performance objective is to maximize the cloaking success rate under the privacy and QoS constraints. Furthermore, we introduce an option of using dummy locations to achieve a 100% cloaking success rate at the cost of communication overhead. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our cloaking algorithm under various privacy and QoS requirements. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Many studies show that named entities are closely related to users' search behaviors, which brings increasing interest in studying named entities in search logs recently. This paper addresses the problem of forming fine grained semantic clusters of named entities within a broad domain such as "company", and generating keywords for each cluster, which help users to interpret the embedded semantic information in the cluster. By exploring contexts, URLs and session IDs as features of named entities, a three-phase approach proposed in this paper first disambiguates named entities according to the features. Then it properly weights the features with a novel measurement, calculates the semantic similarity between named entities with the weighted feature space, and clusters named entities accordingly. After that, keywords for the clusters are generated using a text-oriented graph ranking algorithm. Each phase of the proposed approach solves problems that are not addressed in existing works, and experimental results obtained from a real click through data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A large percentage of queries issued to search engines are broad or ambiguous. Search result diversification aims to solve this problem, by returning diverse results that can fulfill as many different information needs as possible. Most existing intent-aware search result diversification algorithms formulate user intents for a query as a flat list of subtopics. In this paper, we introduce a new hierarchical structure to represent user intents and propose two general hierarchical diversification models to leverage hierarchical intents. Experimental results show that our hierarchical diversification models outperform state-of-the-art diversification methods that use traditional flat subtopics. © 2015 ACM.

Hadoop is now the de facto standard for storing and processing big data, not only for unstructured data but also for some structured data. As a result, providing SQL analysis functionality to the big data resided in HDFS becomes more and more important. Hive is a pioneer system that support SQL-like analysis to the data in HDFS. However, the performance of Hive is not satisfactory for many applications. This leads to the quick emergence of dozens of SQL-on-Hadoop systems that try to support interactive SQL query processing to the data stored in HDFS. This paper firstly gives a brief technical review on recent efforts of SQLon- Hadoop systems. Then we test and compare the performance of five representative SQL-on-Hadoop systems, based on some queries selected or derived from the TPC-DS benchmark. According to the results, we show that such systems can benefit more from the applications of many parallel query processing techniques that have been widely studied in the traditional MPP analytical databases. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

data-centric storage is an effective and important technique in the wireless sensor networks. It stores the sensing data according to their values by mapping them to some point in the network in order to avoid routing all the values outside the network and flooding the queries. However, in most data-centric storage schemes, there is a "hotspot" problem due to the skewness of data and randomness of the mapping functions. Large number of sensor readings (events) may be routed to the same point by the predefined hashed function. In this paper, we propose a new Dynamic BAlanced data-centric Storage (DBAS) scheme, a cooperative strategy between the base station and the in-network processing in wireless sensor network. Our scheme, which utilizes the rich resources in the base station and is aware of the data distributions of the network, dynamically adjusts the mappings from readings to the storage points to balance the storage and workload in the network, as well as to reduce the cost of storing these readings. Moreover, it takes advantage of perimeter routing algorithm of the GPSR routing protocol to store multiple copies of readings to improve the robustness of the network with little overhead. Simulation results show that DBAS is more balanced and energy efficient than the traditional data-centric storage mechanism in wireless sensor network.

Online tagging is crucial for the acquisition and organization of web knowledge. We present TYG (Tag-as-You-Go) in this paper, a web browser extension for online tagging of personal knowledge on standard web pages. We investigate an approach to combine a K-Medoid-style clustering algorithm with the user input to achieve semi-automatic web page annotation. The annotation process supports user-defined tagging schema and comprises an automatic mechanism that is built upon clustering techniques, which can automatically group similar HTML DOM nodes into clusters corresponding to the user specification. TYG is a prototype system illustrating the proposed approach. Experiments with TYG show that our approach can achieve both efficiency and effectiveness in real world annotation scenarios. © 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.
