Inspired by the fish swimming motion of gymnotiform type, an undulating fin module has been developed in the effort to replace the traditional propulsion system of autonomous underwater vehicles. Base on the modelling of force generated in the undulating process of gymnotiform undulating fin module, the force has the non-linear relationship with frequency and velocity of the fin. This paper proposes an estimated function of force generated and design a back stepping sliding mode model for velocity control of gymnotiform undulating fin module. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

Joint Design, Safety Margin, and Ground Experiments of an Underactuated Asteroid Lander

Observations on asteroids will benefit human civilization. Four probes had contacted asteroid surfaces. The NEAR Shoemaker was the first spacecraft to land on an asteroid, while the other three probes finished sample-return missions via the touch-and-go method. Conversely, a soft landing is ideal for conducting in-situ research with onboard instruments. However, the tiny gravity, unknown terrain properties, and self-rotations of the asteroid make the lander prone to tipping over, which may disrupt the instruments’ work. We have proposed an underactuated landing gear system for asteroid landers. Based on this, this work presents a method for designing the landing legs’ joint parameters, which promotes the energy absorption rate from 13% to 38%. Within the Adams-Simulink simulation environment, we developed an iterative search program to find the maximum safe landing tilt angles in 270 scenarios with different descent speeds, horizontal speeds, ground friction coefficients, and thrust forces. The results are analyzed and fitted as a polynomial function with an R2 value of 0.92. Comparisons show that our lander’s safety margin exceeds that of another two landers by at least 10.9°. Furthermore, we conducted landing experiments with a scaled-down lander prototype in a microgravity test platform and discussed the sim-to-real gap. In sum, our research provides a solution for soft landing on asteroids. © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Fire extinguisher testing is an important process to evaluate its quality prior to commercial use. Traditionally, human operators execute the testing process. However, long-term exposure to high temperatures might affect the physical health of the operators. Additionally, the light intensity of the heat source prevents the operators from getting close, which significantly reduces the testing efficiency. Therefore, automating fire extinguisher testing poses the demand for a dedicated mobile robot where the localization enabling path planning control exhibits the challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel kinematic model of a dedicated mobile robot using the three-Pixy2 sensor for tracking the predetermined path in automating the fire extinguisher testing process. These sensors are designed to detect the central point of a dark area that is distinct from the light background. The kinematic model is essential to employ the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to reduce the noisy data from the Pixy2 sensors. Consequently, the filtered data is then fed to the estimation algorithm to provide the position of the mobile robot. Finally, experiments were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model and estimation algorithm. The result proves that the EKF can smoothen the estimated position.

Tunable uniform field enhancement in a subwavelength air pillar by photonic doping in epsilon-near-zero medium

In this study, a novel electric field compressor is proposed by doping a metal-air-metal pillar in epsilon-near-zero medium within a metallic waveguide, which effectively enhances the background electric fields in a sub-wavelength air pillar with high uniformity. The field enhancement factor can be analytically determined through theoretical derivations from Maxwell's equations, reaching its maximum value by appropriately selecting the size of the air pillar. Furthermore, the proposed compressor can achieve a tunable electric field enhancement effect within the deep sub-wavelength air pillar by adjusting the height of the air pillar through movement of two metal pillars inserted into the waveguide. Both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are employed to validate the performance of the electric field compressor, which exhibits a wide range of tunable field enhancement effect (i.e., continuously adjustable enhancement factor between 20 and 800) with uniformity below 1.5 within the deep sub-wavelength air pillar (wherein the air volume is smaller than λ0/10 × λ0/10 × λ0/16). Finally, a practical model is proposed for the realization of the electric field compressor in the microwave range, where specially placed metal pillars and wires are incorporated into a rectangular metallic waveguide structure. The field enhancement and tunable effects of this practical model have been verified through simulations. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Broadband planar electromagnetic hyper-lens with uniform magnification in air

A planar hyper-lens, capable of creating sub-wavelength imaging for broadband electromagnetic wave, is designed based on electromagnetic null medium. Subsequently, a scheme for the implementation of the proposed hyper-lens is given by using well-designed flexural metal plates, which function as the reduced electromagnetic null medium for TM-polarized microwaves. Both simulated and measured results verify that the hyper-lens designed with flexural metal plates can achieve super-resolution imaging for microwave at operating wavelength (λ0=3cm) with a resolution of 0.25λ0 and a uniform magnification of about 5. Moreover, the designed hyper-lens ensures that both the object and image surfaces are planes, and simultaneously provides a uniform magnification for objects in different positions. Additionally, the proposed hyper-lens offers a broadband superresolution imaging capabilities, achieving good super-resolution imaging effects for microwave frequencies ranging from 8.5 to 11 GHz. The proposed hyper-lens may find applications in high precision imaging, detection, and sensing. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

To address the increasingly serious issue of noise pollution, we propose an ultra-broadband and wide-angle acoustic absorber based on a periodic acoustic rigid-metaporous composite array. Numerical simulation results verify the broadband good acoustic absorption performance of the proposed absorber, which can achieve an average absorption coefficient of approximately 90.9% within the frequency band from 500 to 4000 Hz with incident angles ranging from -75 to +75 degrees, thus compensating for the shortcomings of traditional acoustic absorbers that are not as effective at low frequencies. This work will provide a new approach for ultra-broadband and wide-angle acoustic wave absorption and noise suppression. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With technological advancements, resource utilization has increased, making renewable energy sources like solar power essential. Effective defect detection for solar panels is crucial. However, manual inspection is currently inefficient and machine vision lacks accuracy. In order to improve defect detection in high-resolution images and overcome the limitations of existing methods, we propose an unsupervised deep learning model called PV-Flow, which combines a hybrid attentional mechanism and a multiscale feature extraction module of the flow model. Before defect detection we need to categorize the defects and make a dataset, after observing the features we classify the defects into black spots, broken grids, hidden cracks and fragmentations. The performance of the model while performing defect detection is evaluated by metrics of reconstructed images and visual comparisons. Experiments on real solar panel datasets show that our proposed PV-Flow model is able to accurately identify the location of broken gate defects and show more details, with even the smallest defects clearly labeled and magnified. This suggests that our proposed model is able to detect potential defects earlier, thus reducing production risks and costs. We also conducted comparative experiments to further validate the reliability of the model.

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau contains the most abundant clean energy such as hydropower, wind and solar in the world. However, it is very difficult to add overhead transmission lines on the ground due to the complex geographical environment. The large-capacity tunnel cables which is less affected by the earth surface environment, may play an important role on the energy transmission in such area. Based on the cable thermal circuit model, the electrical-magnetic-thermal multiphysics coupling of the cable is modeled in COMSOL Multiphysics. The parameter changes of the material during the temperature rising process, the influence of different ventilation conditions and different current-carrying capacities on the changes of the cable temperature field are quantitatively analyzed. The results show that the proposed model is valid in certain conditions. The research on the current carrying capacity and thermal effect of tunnel cables is of great significance for the transportation and consumption of large-scale clean energy resources. © 2022 IEEE.
