Recently, semiconductor and noble metal complex nanomaterials have attracted ever-increasing attention because of the realization of multiple functionalities in a single entity. In this study, Ag-TiO2 core-shell nanocomposites were synthesized by hydrolysis of butyl titanate on the surface of Ag nanowires. Due to efficient electron transfer at the Ag-TiO2 interface, the as-prepared nanocomposites exhibit much higher photocatalytic activity than bare TiO2 films, as demonstrated by the enhanced photodegradation rate of R6G and methyl blue molecules. In the meanwhile, such nanocomposites serve as a high-sensitivity surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for in situ monitoring of the photocatalytic decomposition reaction, and the substrate is recyclable due to its self-cleaning function. Full-wave numerical calculations reveal that the improved photocatalysis and SERS efficiencies are attributed to the largely enhanced electromagnetic near-field in the nanocomposites. Our results point out that bifunctional semiconductor-metal hybrids hold great promise for simultaneously detecting and decomposing organic pollutants in the environment. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Residential sector is the biggest potential field of reducing peak demand through demand response (DR) in smart grid. Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the largest residential electricity user in house. Therefore, controlling the operation of HVAC is an effective method to implement DR in residential sector. The algorithms proposed in literature are single objective optimization algorithms that only minimize the electricity cost and could not quantify the user's comfort level. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a comfort level indicator, builds a multi-objective scheduling model, and presents a multi-objective optimal control algorithm for HVAC based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). The algorithm controls the operation of HVAC according to electricity price, outdoor temperature forecast, and user preferences to minimize the electricity cost and maximize the user comfort level simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is verified by simulations, and the results demonstrate that it can decrease the electricity cost significantly and maintain the user comfort level effectively.

This paper describes a new method for how interfering MIMO links might transmit more effectively in a random access network. We assume perfect transmitter-side channel state information, zero-forcing pre-coding to guarantee no interference on links that have already won access, and zero-forcing receiver processing at the still-contending links to suppress interference from the links that have already won. We define an effectiveness metric, the Instantaneous Equivalent SNR Percentile (IESP), in which the Equivalent SNR is the SNR of a single-input-single-output (SISO) link that would have the same capacity of a MIMO link after its interference constraints have been met and the IESP is the percentile of the Equivalent SNR, assuming independent Rayleigh fading. We propose that fairness among heterogeneous contending links be realized by giving the shorter contention window to the link with the higher IESP based on its own distribution, enabling links with few antennas to compete with links that have many antennas. Through simulation of the sum capacity of the winning set of links, the proposed contention window design is shown to provide a higher sum capacity than contention based on equal-sized windows.

To evaluate associations by EGFR mutation status for lung adenocarcinoma risk among never-smoking Asian women, we conducted a meta-analysis of 11 loci previously identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Genotyping in an additional 10,780 never-smoking cases and 10,938 never-smoking controls from Asia confirmed associations with eight known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Two new signals were observed at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-8), namely, rs7216064 (17q24.3, BPTF), for overall lung adenocarcinoma risk, and rs3817963 (6p21.3, BTNL2) which is specific to cases with EGFR mutations. In further sub-analyses by EGFR status, rs9387478 (ROS1/DCBLD1) and rs2179920 (HLA-DPB1) showed stronger estimated associations in EGFR-positive compared to EGFR-negative cases. Comparison of the overall associations with published results in Western populations revealed that the majority of these findings were distinct, underscoring the importance of distinct contributing factors for smoking and non-smoking lung cancer. Our results extend the catalogue of regions associated with lung adenocarcinoma in non-smoking Asian women and highlight the importance of how the germline could inform risk for specific tumour mutation patterns, which could have important translational implications.

In this paper, a pitch angle control scheme based on the fuzzy logic is proposed for the variable-speed wind turbine systems. The generator output power and rotor speed are used as control input variables for the fuzzy logic controller (FLC), which are effective to compensate for the nonlinear characteristic of the pitch angle to the wind speed. Also, a speed sensorless technique estimating the rotational speed is employed for the proposed control method. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by MATlab simulation results for a 2-MW PMSG wind turbine system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

This paper proposes a control scheme for the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind power system. The DC-link voltage can be controlled at the machine-side converter (MSC), while the grid-side converter (GSC) controls the grid active power for a maximum power point tracking (MPPT). At the grid fault condition, the DC-link voltage controller is designed using a feedback linearization (FL) theory. For the MPPT, it is also developed for the PMSG wind turbines to continuously generate the maximum electrical power without any sensor. The validity of this control algorithm has been verified by simulation 2-MW PMSG wind turbine system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Supply chain risk management (SCRM) has received increasing attention. However, our knowledge of how to manage supply chain risk is still limited. Although many scholars appeal that supply chains (SCs) should be cooperatively managed and information sharing should be used to reduce risks and invisibility in SCs. To the best of our knowledge, little empirical research exists concerning information sharing and supply chain risk. Specifically, based on an empirically study of 308 samples of Chinese manufacturers, we try to answer three questions: Does risk-related information sharing reduce supply chain risk? Does risk-related information sharing increase firm performance - operational performance, customer satisfaction, and financial performance? Does supply chain risk mediate the impact of riskrelated information sharing on firm performance? Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that supply chain risk, operational performance, and customer satisfaction all benefit from riskrelated information sharing. Supply chain risk negatively relates to operational performance and customer satisfaction. Financial performance is positively related with operational performance and customer satisfaction, but there is no relationship between supply chain risk and financial performance.

We consider a multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system using block diagonalization and eigenbeam-space division multiplexing to suppress inter-user interference and inter-stream interference. In time-varying environments, the performance seriously degrades due to mistracking of beamforming. A channel prediction scheme can eliminate the effect of the time-varying environments. In this paper, using indoor measurement data, we evaluate the bit error rate (BER) performance of a multi-user MIMO system with channel prediction based on an autoregressive model. It is shown that the proposed channel prediction technique can improve the BER performance significantly. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a hybrid navigation and control method for intelligent wheelchair. A robust and semi-supervised vision tracking method using Microsoft Kinect and obstacle avoidance navigation approach are integrated into a two-level control system. Then, position tracking control considering nonholonomic constraints are adopted for the motion control of wheelchairs. An indoor environment is set up for evaluating the application of the proposed approaches. The experimenta l results show that the proposed method is effective and can be used as a hands-free controller for the intelligent wheelchair. Copyright © 2013 IFAC.

With the development of smart substations, much attention has been focused on the transient magnetic field (TMF) generated during switching operation in substations. In order to study the TMF, a portable integrated system based on Anisotropic Magneto-resistive (AMR) sensor has been developed. The system mainly consists of magnetic probe, sampling card, and industrial computer. A GPS has also been brought in to stamp the TMF events time. This system can record TMF across a bandwidth from DC to 5MHz and a dynamic range from 20mGs to 6Gs for at least 50ms continuously. laboratory tests show that the system linearity is greater than 97%, the measuring error is less than 3% and the verified rising time of input magnetic field reaches 6.4μs. Field applications are presented at last, they show that the TMF is very complex but regular to some extent, and the stable magnetic fields are in conformity with operation theory. In conclusion, the proposed system is high sensitivity, wide dynamic and relatively wide bandwidth, and it is qualified to most applications in substations. © 2013 IEEE.
