Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are facultative anaerobic, and the electron transfer process of their growth and metabolic activities is as follows: the electrons released from the metal surface pass through the cell wall into the cell by extracellular electron transfer, and the electron shuttle to the body plays the role of electron transfer between cells and metals. In this study, the effect of riboflavin (RF) as an electron shuttle on SRB corrosion of X80 pipeline steel was analyzed. The results showed that the addition of 10 ppm RF to the SRB medium did not significantly change the type of corrosion products, but resulted in an enlarged corrosion pit area and an increased pit depth. The corrosion weight loss rate of the SRB + 10 ppm RF system is about 3 times that of the SRB system, and the corrosion current density of the polarization curve is about 38% higher than that of the SRB system. Therefore, RF can transfer the electrons released by iron oxidation to the cytoplasm by means of electron transfer across the cell wall, thereby accelerating the corrosion of X80 steel. This further proves that the electronic medium RF can accelerate the microbial influenced corrosion (MIC) caused by SRB. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Performance enhancement of recycled coarse aggregate concrete by incorporating with macro fibers processed from waste GFRP

Reprocessing into coarse aggregates of concrete is a sustainable solution for the disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The use of recycled coarse aggregates however leads to a degradation in the mechanical properties of the resulting concrete, which then limits the use of recycled aggregates concrete (RAC) in structural elements. The incorporation of discrete fibers shows to be effective in eliminating the mechanical degradation problem of RAC, and this paper has therefore proposed to use macro fibers recycled from waste glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) to reinforce RAC, thus improving the robustness of using RAC in structural elements. The effect of incorporating macro fibers on the mechanical properties of RAC has been first examined through a series of compression and bending tests. The tensile constitutive law of concrete was then derived based on the load-deflection response of the beam specimens using an inverse analysis. The results revealed that the mechanical properties (e.g., compressive toughness, flexural strength, flexural toughness) of RAC can be significantly enhanced by adding macro fibers. For concrete with 50% recycled aggregate (RA), the increase of macro fibers (from 0% to 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) leads to the enhancement of flexural strength from 3.13 MPa to 3.54, 4.69, and 5.97 MPa, and the toughness (T150) from 1.4 J to 35.5, 59.2 and 77.6 J, respectively. Such enhancements in the mechanical properties of RAC demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

Bridge condition monitoring under moving loads using two sensor measurements

A novel damage detection approach using only two sensors to detect the damage in beam bridges subjected to a moving vehicle is proposed in this article. In this approach, a moving mass is considered representing a vehicle moving across the bridge, and structural vibration responses at two locations are measured from a pair of sensors. A moving window is defined with a certain length determined by the sampling frequency and the fundamental frequency of the measured responses. The windowed pair time series extracted from these two measured responses are used to calculate the cross-correlation, which is used to define the local damage index. A simply supported beam bridge subjected to a moving mass is simulated to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach. Numerical results indicate that the proposed approach can accurately identify the single and multiple damages using both displacement and acceleration responses, even when the responses are smeared with a significant noise. This indicates a good robustness to the noise effect. Experimental verifications on a laboratory beam bridge model demonstrate that the proposed approach can successfully identify the damage location using different selections of sensor pairs. Both the numerical and experimental results demonstrate that the new damage index is a good candidate for structural damage detection with very limited measurement information.

In engineering practice, the evaluation of seismic reliability of high-rise reinforced concrete structure relies on the probabilistic modelling of material properties. However, the measured data of material parameters in engineering practice is usually inadequate to determine the probability model accurately, especially for the problems involving spatial variability. Traditional parametric reliability analysis methods can be biased for this kind of problem. Therefore, a nonparametric seismic reliability analysis method is proposed based on the Bayesian compressive sensing - stochastic harmonic function method and the probability density evolution method. In this method, the conditional random fields are generated and applied to represent material properties of concrete. As a result, the seismic reliability of a high-rise reinforced concrete shear wall model structure is analyzed using the probability density evolution method.

Study on the Co-Culture Mechanism of Urea-Hydrolysis Bacteria and Biosurfactant Bacteria for Dust Suppression

To solve the problems of poor wettability and difficult penetration of microbial dust suppressants caused by the strong hydrophobicity of coal dust, a biosurfactant bacteria (previously screened in coal dust, strain P) and a urea-hydrolysis bacteria (also screened in coal dust, strain X) were co-cultured. In addition, the growth characteristics, mineralization, and emulsification performance of the compound bacteria under different inoculation sequences (P14X, X14P, PX, P24X, and X24P) were studied. Results showed that strain P may inhibit the diffusion of the strain X, but ultimately can synergistically grow and increase the urease activity of co-culture system. It also can be found that the compound bacteria P14X exhibits quite high mineralization and emulsification characteristics. Non-targeted gene metabolomics analysis found that strain X in co-culture systems can provide fatty acids for the production of biosurfactants and promote the synthesis of rhamnolipids. At the same time, strain P can provide an alkaline environment for the occurrence of mineralization in co-culture systems and promote the generation of CaCO3. The preparation of microbial dust suppressants based on compound bacteria can provide theoretical basis and data support for the application of microbial dust suppressants in the field of coal dust prevention and control. © 2023, The Authors. Sensitivity of sequence seismic effects of double-layer reticulated domes

To study whether or not structural responses of double-layer reticulated domes was sensitive to sequence earthquake to avoid structure collapse under aftershocks, a structure's finite element model was established based on the finite element software ABAQUS. Data of main shock and aftershock responses to sequence earthquake in database of the pacific earthquake engineering research center (PEER) were selected to collect 342 groups of main shock and aftershock acceleration response time histories data. The dynamic time history analysis method in full load domain was adopted to obtain variation laws of structural characteristic responses with changes of acceleration amplitude under various sequence earthquakes. 4 effect levels on reticulated shell structures' multiple seismic responses were classified and defined. Then, statistic analysis was done for a lot of example results to obtain the relation between reticulated shells' characteristic responses of maximum nodal displacement, proportion of yield members and structural damage factor when main shock was over and structures' anti-aftershock ability. Finally, the proportion of yield members was taken as the index to measure double-layer reticulated domes' anti-aftershock ability, and sensitive limit values of proportion of yield members for double-layer reticulated domes with different spans were given. The study results provided a reference for aseismic design and aseismic performance evaluation of reticulated shell structures. © 2020, Editorial Office of Journal of Vibration and Shock. Influence of infilling stiffness on mechanical and fracturing responses of hollow cylindrical sandstone under uniaxial compression tests

Hollow cylindrical sandstone specimens filled with Al,Pb and polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA),as well as hollow and solid specimens were tested under monotonic unconfined *** discrepancies in the elastic modulus,unconfined compressive strength and failure pattern of the specimens were studied and then *** interaction stress threshold and localized failure stress threshold were identified by the strain gauges on the rock and filling *** results indicated that unobvious changes in the strength and elastic modulus were found between the solid and hollow specimens,while for the hollow specimens with infillings,the strength decreases with increasing the stiffness of the infilling *** filling material with a higher stiffness leads to a high hoop stress,and hence a stronger interfacial *** specimens coupled with filling rod are mainly fractured with tensile cracks,while the solid and hollow specimens are typically split into blocky fragments with dominated shear ***,the equivalent inner pressure in the opening was theoretically *** findings suggested in the experiments can be well explained using the theoretical thick-walled cylinder model.

Actuated bending of a long cantilevered glassy nematic bilayer strip: Failure of the beam model

Cantilevered long glassy nematic bilayer strips bend in response to light, and thus are attractive for actuation applications. The objective of this work is to examine whether the deformation can be predicted by the one-dimensional beam model as in usual practice. To do so, we consider a bilayer with orthogonal director orientations in the upper and lower layers and analyze its bending in the framework of the classical plate *** that the deflection is much larger than that given by the beam model, because the spontaneous bending in the width direction increases the curvature along the long axis. Therefore, the one-dimensional beam model fails to describe the bending behavior of the cantilevered bilayer strips. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd. © International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing.

Experimental study on permeability of spun high strength concrete material during mechanical loading

The pretensioned spun high strength concrete pipe pile (PHC pipe pile) is widely applied in important infrastructures of off-shore zones due to its low permeability and high capacity. During the construction process and the whole service period of PHC pipe piles, the damage is inevitably caused by many reasons, which may eventually cause the early durability failure of piles. Many researches have been conducted to study the change in permeability of normal concrete due to mechanical damage. However, the relation between permeability and damage of spun high strength concrete (SHSC) is still not been studied. To quantitively investigate the change of permeability of SHSC, a series of specimens of PHC pipe piles were tested for the change of permeability during mechanical loading process in this study. As a result, the relation of stress and permeability of spun high strength concrete as well as the crack roughness of the SHSC is obtained for efficient application in engineering. Before the 40% stress ratio, the permeability of the SHSC is slightly decreased as the compressive stress increases. The mean value and standard deviation of the intrinsic permeability of the SHSC are increased as the compressive stress loading reaches the peak stress. The order of magnitude of the crack roughness & xi;can be taken as 10 -4 for engineering application. Compared with the vibrate-casted concrete, the crack roughness & xi;is smaller, indicating that the crack surface of SHSC is rougher than the vibrate-casted concrete.
