The quasi-Green function method(QGFM) is applied to solve the free vibration of clamped orthotropic thin plates with parallelogram boundary shape on Winkler foundation. Firstly the model governing differential equation of the problem is reduced to the boundary value problem of the biharmonic operator, and then it is reduced to the Fredholm integral equation of the second kind by Green's formula. A quasi-Green function is established by using the fundamental solution and the boundary equation of the problem. This function satisfies the homogeneous boundary condition of the problem. The singularity of the kernel of the integral equation is overcome by choosing a suitable form of the normalized boundary equation. The comparison with ANSYS finite element solution shows a good agreement. The proposed method is a novel and effective mathematical one.

The tunnel construction causes deformation, even damage of the nearby buildings and other types of structures. Using 3d finite element method can simulate the process of shield tunneling construction. The paper studies the influence of different building load on the deformation of soil, when considering different excavation steps in the process of tunnel construction. The results show that the building load has important influence on the surface displacement during the construction of tunnel. With the advancement of excavation, sedimentation tank will move forward and become larger. By the influence of jacking force, the soil and rock in front of tunnel face moves forward and upward, thus forming the surface uplift.

Occurrence mechanism of unloading needs to be clarified. Through a combination of theory and finite element method, this paper studied the unloading behavior involved in interfacial failure process under an exponential softening law, clarified when and where unloading occurred and estimated the effect of unloading.

Conventionally cylindrical shells are often treated as shallow shells whose governing equation, according to Karman-Donnell's theory, can be approximated by those of thin plates. In this paper Karman-Donnell's theory for shallow shells is extended for long cylindrical shells undergoing large, nonlinear flexural deflection. The kinematic relations between the changes of curvature and the displacement are derived and the governing equations are established by considering the influence of the initial curvature of the cylindrical shells. In particular, the extended Karman-Donnell's theory is applied for the failure analysis of infinitely cylindrical shell under lateral pressure. A regional collapse mode is identified to occur in the shell with a longitudinal span proportional to (radius(3)/thickness)((1/2)) and a transverse profile of dog bone shape. It is found that the buckling pressure of the shell is in proportion to (thickness/radius)(3) and converges to the classic solution given by Timoshenko and Gere (1961). A comparison to the previous works indicates that ignoring the effect of the initial curvature will result in an overestimate of the buckling pressure for 33%. It shows that the initial curvature of long cylindrical shells has significant influence on the load carrying capacity and the extended Karman-Donnell's equations give very accurate predictions. Using 3d finite element method can simulate the process of shield tunnel construction. The paper studies the impact of different tunnel depth on the deformation of soil, when considering different excavation steps in the process of tunnel construction. The results show that the shallower the tunnel depth, and the greater the amount of the surface displacement during the tunnel construction. In the process of the tunnel excavation, the soil surface displacement in front of the shield machine is the result of superposition of the uplift and subsidence. When the tunnel depth increases, the surface displacement curve becomes smoother, and the rate of change becomes slower.

The R-function theory and variational method are employed to solve the torsion problem of the bar with a complicated cross-section. When the variational method is used to solve the elastic torsion problem alone, the stress function can be set to meet the boundary condition, only with the simple cross-section such as the rectangle and ellipse. For the complicated cross-section, it is hard to find a stress function to meet the boundary condition. The R-function theory can solve the problem, and it can be used to describe the complicated cross-section by implicit function form. Introducing the R-function theory can be easy to construct the stress function that satisfied the boundary of the complicated cross-section. A numerical example demonstrates the feasibility and efficiency of the present method.

For solving the big deflection problem which is cause by the far cantilever segment of dead load zero bending moment method, analyzing the composition process of dead load and prestress bending moment, and this paper presents the improvement of dead load zero bending moment *** improved method adopts the prestress in principle: far segment more and close segment litter, which not only can insure the prestress bending moment bigger than dead load zero bending moment in all over the cantilever constructing stage, but also can control the deflection well. The improved method is applied to a PC continuous bridge which has a main span of 168 metres, the deflection decreases 24.4% to that of the original design.

The Guangzhou Subway System adopts a planning scheme that guides passengers through a system of symbolic colors for its routes. However, the designers seem to have neglected color blind's difficulty in distinguishing some hues when selecting the routes' symbolic colors, which suggests that color universal design theories are not properly applied in their design work. This research aims at evaluating Guangzhou Subway's symbolic color and guidance system from the color universal design perspective. We use the Vischeck[1] to simulate and analyze the practical situation. In accordance with the analysis, solutions are recommended.
