In this paper, the technology of attractor phase space in chaotic theory is introduced and applied in the structural damage detection. Firstly the phase plane is constructed with the displacement and acceleration responses. Using the changes of phase plane topology of intact and damaged responses, a new damage index is extracted, and the structural damage existence and severity are identified successfully. Since some of the state variables can not be measured, a method of phase space reconstruction is proposed using single dynamic response. The dynamic responses are directly displayed into phase space, realizing transforming the signals from time domain to space domain. Then using the reconstructed phase space, the damage is diagnosed. The results indicate that the phase space reconstruction method has good robustness to noise, and higher sensitivity compared with traditional modal-based methods. The phase space reconstruction method can calculate the value of the damage index using single dynamic response, so that a single sensor can monitor structural damage existence and severity.

The deformation and long-term deformation of soft soils are concerned both in academic and engineering fields, and they lead to the excessive settlement and post-construction settlement of soft layers. Based on one-dimensional consolidation principle, the tests on the constant stress ratio consolidation with K0, which is more actual consolidation state of soft foundation, are carried out to study the primary and secondary consolidation characteristics. The undisturbed samples used are obtained from a dredger fill foundation in Shantou of Guangdong province. By comparing with the K0 confined compression tests, it is noted that the instantaneous compression is significant in the tests on the constant stress ratio consolidation with K0, which affect the primary and secondary deformations. There are higher compression index, lower compression modulus and lower secondary consolidation coefficient than those in K0 confined compression tests, and the duration of the primary consolidation is shorter.

One of the main objectives of this study was to activate the pozzolanic activity of sludge, produced by municipal sewage treatment plants (MSTP), make it become an admixture to replace a part of cement in concrete. Nowadays, a significant quantity of MSTP sludge is obtained in China. That is why this paper examines the possibility of adding this waste product to plain concrete with Portland cement. Preliminary studies are carried out on using MSTP sludge as an admixture by thermal (calcining) and mechanical (grinding) treatment. The pozzolanic activity of the calcined sludge ash (CSA) evaluated by Cement Mortar test. The CSA-blended cement concrete was formed into specimens of cubic concrete with 100 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm. They are with 30 wt. % cement replaced by CSA, which was prepared by the optimal activation conditions. The Cement Mortar test results revealed that the optimal activation conditions of CSA were as follows: calcined at 800 degrees C for 2.5 hours followed by fast cooling in air and then ground until 60 minutes. Besides, the compressive strengths of concrete specimens with added 30% CSA were 103.6% and 105.3% of those of the ordinary Portland cement concrete specimens at 7 and 28 days, respectively. These results demonstrate the feasibility of recycling MSTP sludge as an admixture in concrete for construction engineering.

Effective moduli of fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites filled with nano-particle considering the effect of linear change of interphase are presented in this paper. The three-phase inclusion problem for matrix-interface-particle is equivalent to the Eshelby two-phase inclusion problem. According to the result of the Eshelby inclusion problem, the effective modulus tensor of unit cell of equivalent particle is derived. The effective moduli of equivalent matrix are given based on Mori-Tanaka method. Using two fundamental equation of micromechanic theory, the three-dimensional bridged formulation of unidirectional composites is derived. The quantitative relationship between the macroscopic elastic parameters and the structural parameters of the fiber-reinforced polymer composites filled with nano-particles is investigated. Effects of the thickness of interfacial layer, the particle size and the volume fraction of nanoparticles on the effective elastic moduli of the composites are also discussed.

This paper investigates the mechanical properties and the fire resistance of steel-polypropylene hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete. The type of the polypropylene fibers are polypropylene monofilament fiber, polypropylene fibrillated fiber, and macro polypropylene fiber, and the type of the steel fibers is hooked steel fiber. The experimental results show that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural properties of steel-macro polypropylene hybrid fiber reinforced concrete are better than any others. And the fire resistance of steel-monofilament polypropylene hybrid fiber reinforced concrete is the best.

In order to obtain reliable structural design, it is of extreme importance to evaluate the failure probability, safety levels of structure (reliability analysis) and the effect of a change in a variable parameter on structural safety (sensitivity analysis) when uncertainties are considered. With a computationally cheaper approximation of the limit state function, various response surface methods (RSMs) have emerged as a convenient tool to solve this especially for complex problems. However, the traditional RSMs may produce large errors in some conditions especially for those highly non-linear limit state functions. Instead of the traditional least squares approximation, in the present paper, a new RSM is proposed which employs moving Kriging interpolation, based on the axial experimental points selected from the region where the most probable failure point (MPFP) is likely to exist to construct the substitute response surface. The proposed method is illustrated by comparing with the results obtained from first order reliability method (FORM) and other conventional RSMs with reference to specific structural reliability analysis problems. The results show that the proposed method improves the accuracy of the reliability analysis with a reasonable computational cost, and could more quickly approach the exact solution.

Ideally, structural health monitoring of civil infrastructure consists of determining, by measured parameters, the location and severity of damage in the structure. Many structural Vibration parameters have been used to identify and quantify damage. Using parameters based on structural Vibration phase space features for damage detection is a new field in structural health monitoring. In this paper, a new damage detection method based on phase space of a single response is proposed. Firstly, the defmition of phase space of Vibration system is introduced. Then a new damage index named CPST (changes of phase space topology) based on topology changes of the phase space of Vibration signals under a moving load is introduced. The phase space of the dynamic response is constructed by the velocity and acceleration responses. The CPST values are calculated from the constructed phase space and used to identify structural damage. The main idea is that when the moving load passing by the damage location, the CPST curves have a singular point, which is used to locate the damage location. To demonstrate the method, the dynamic responses of a point on a beam-like structure are measured under different damage severity are used to calculate CPST for damage detection. The results indicate the CPST curves can successfully identify damage location and quantification. The proposed method is a good candidate for damage detection since only one sensor is needed.

This essay analyses the design of Stockholm Metro in Sweden, focusing on its planning and design of public art. The design has successfully solved problems by giving vivid guidance to passengers in several ways: the use of colour decoration in stations, personalized designs of spaces and the changes of passengers' sensory focuses, which are valuable to improve the management and the transportation quality of Metro in China.

Postbuckling Analysis of the Length of Transition Zone in a Buckle Propagating Pipeline

When a buckle is initiated in a pipe subjected to external pressure, it will propagate along the longitudinal direction of the pipe if the external pressure is greater than its buckle propagation pressure. For a steady state condition, the propagation is simply considered as the translation of the buckle along the pipeline. This paper presents a unique approach to determine the length of the transition zone in a buckle propagating pipe by analyzing the mechanism of postbuckling of the pipe subjected to the external pressure. Buckling is considered to occur locally in the shell, spreading over a certain length along the longitudinal axis of the shell. The governing equations are derived from the postbuckling theory. Approximate solutions are obtained from the Ritz method, using a plausible function of the flexural displacement created based on Timoshenko's ring solution of the transverse collapse mode. The postbuckling equilibrium path shows that the pipeline experiences unstable collapse until the two opposite points on the inner surface contact each other. The length of the transition zone is found to be proportional to the ratio of (radius)(3/2)/(thickness)(1/2) and is hardly affected by the material properties. The analysis is performed by comparing the obtained results with well-established predictions.
