Dynamic analysis of non-uniform continuous girder bridge under moving vehicle

For non-uniform continuous bridge in actual projects, the theoretical analysis and field testing of the dynamic response under moving vehicle are carried out. Firstly, Euler-Lagrange equation is applied to derive the vibration equation of three-axle vehicle. Then one obtains the dynamic analysis model by using the finite element method and the vehicle-bridge interaction equation based on the displacement coordination relationship of the contact between wheels and bridge. Lastly, numerical solutions are presented according to the dynamic response of the bridge, compared with the real values. The results show that: the roadway roughness and vehicle speed strongly influence the impact factor. © (2011) Trans Tech Publications.

Based on the method of complex functions, the SH-wave scattered by a cavity with arbitrary shape in infinite anisotropic medium is investigated, and a far field solution of displacement is presented. As a result, the far field properties of the SH-wave scattered by circular, elliptical and square cavities in an anisotropic elastic medium with a symmetry plane are analyzed and some curves describing the far field properties of scattering SH-wave are obtained. The results show that the far field characteristic properties of the scattering SH-wave are determined by the incident wave, the geometric shape and the properties of medium. Additionally, the anisotropy of elastic medium has more significant influence on the far field displacement distribution than isotropy.

Extended isoparametric finite method (XIFEM) consists in enriching the basis of the classical finite element method and taking into account the discontinuity of the displacement field across the crack by a discontinuous function along the crack line. It simulates the discontinuous character resulted from discontinuity such as crack or joint and by some trigonometric basis functions around the crack tip to embody singularity at the end of discontinuity. With the improved XIFEM, the tracking of crack propagation in reinforced concrete beams strengthened with FRP is simulated and the failure model is analyzed. Compared with the traditional finite element method, the XIFEM allows crack surface to be in any position of finite element mesh without dense mesh near the crack tips and without re-meshing, therefore crack growth is traced and modeled effectively. The results show the effectiveness and superiority of the improved XIFEM.

A new method for parameter sensitivity estimation in structural reliability analysis

For the parameter sensitivity estimation with implicit limit state functions in the time-invariant reliability analysis, the common Monte Carlo simulation based approach involves multiple trials for each parameter being varied, which will increase associated computational cost and the cost may become inevitably high especially when many random variables are involved. Another effective approach for this problem is featured as constructing the equivalent limit state function (usually called response surface) and performing the estimation in FORM/SORM. However, as the equivalent limit state function is polynomial in the traditional response surface method, it is not a good approximation especially for some highly non-linear limit state functions. To solve the above two problems, a new method, support vector regression based response surface method, is therefore presented in this paper. The support vector regression algorithm is employed to construct the equivalent limit state function and FORM/SORM is used in the parameter sensitivity estimation, and then two illustrative examples are given. It is shown that the computational cost of the sensitivity estimation can be greatly reduced and the accuracy can be retained, and results of the sensitivity estimation obtained by the proposed method are in satisfactory agreement with those computed by the conventional Monte Carlo methods. Based on the gently inclined medium thick phosphate rock at the deep part of the east mining section of Jinning-Six Mine, Yunnan Phosphate Co. Ltd. from open pit mining to underground mining, floor friction model tests under the condition of different slope heights and boundary thicknesses were carried out with a floor friction model instrument. The results show that the deformation and failure response features of the slope can be divided into three stages: fracture and loose in a small range, unstable failure in a local range, and instability failure in the whole range of slope rock sliding to the goaf. The main deformation and failure modes of the slope are tension cracking, breakage, and sliding failure. When the slope height is fixed, with the boundary thickness gradually decreasing from 30 m to 20 m and 10 m, the stability of the slope is directly proportional to the boundary thickness, and the reasonable boundary thickness is 20 m to 30 m. When the boundary thickness is fixed, with the slope height increasing from 60 m to 108 m, the stability of the slope is inversely proportional to the slope height, and the slope of 108 m from open pit mining to underground mining is unstable.

We present a new response surface based stochastic finite element method to obtain solutions for general random uncertainty problems using the polynomial chaos expansion. The approach is general but here a typical elastostatics example only with the random field of Young's modulus is presented to illustrate the stress analysis, and computational comparison with the traditional polynomial expansion approach is also performed. It shows that the results of the polynomial chaos expansion are improved compared with that of the second polynomial expansion method.

Woven textile sandwich composite (WTSC) is a light-weight structural material. The manufacturing method of WTSC was introduced in the paper. To reveal the quasi-static and the dynamic crushing behavior of WTSC, out-of-plane compression tests were carried out. Low-velocity impact experiments were carried out to investigate the anti-crush ability of WTSC. The results of the quasi-static and dynamic compression tests show that the woven textile sandwich material has good energy absorption ability. From the difference of the peak loads, it is concluded that the woven textiles have strain rate sensitivity. The intact woven textile sandwich panel and the destroyed one have different anti-crush abilities. Different methods are used to enhance the anti-penetrating of the intact woven textile sandwich panels, for example, increasing the content of the glass fibers, enlarging the diameter of the glass fibers and enlarging the height of front faces and the whole panel. From the experiments, it is concluded that WTSC has light weight, great specific strength and good energy absorption ability. WTSC is a promising light-weight structural material for vehicle bodies.

An approach for structural optimization with uncertainty is proposed in this paper, which is based on stochastic finite element analysis and an optimality criteria method. The sensitivity analysis of the structural failure probability via design variables are performed by difference method according to stochastic finite element analysis. The information of the partial derivatives is incorporated into the optimality criteria method. The optimization of the section of a beam with uncertainty, as a numerical example, is illustrated by the approach. The results demonstrate the efficiency of the approach.

Parametric effect on bidirectional moving vehicle load identification from plate bridge responses is studied in this paper. The equation of motion of a plate bridge-bidirectional vehicle system is formulated based on Hamilton principle and is rewritten in a state space form, the bidirectional moving load identification problem is considered as a damped least-squares problem and further solved with the regularization method. Finally, the effect of parameters on identification accuracy is investigated in order to evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of the bidirectional moving load identification method proposed in a companion paper. Some numerical simulations show that the proposed method is correct and effective for identifying the bidirectional moving vehicle loads from bridge responses with an acceptable accuracy, but the selection of parameters should be carefully considered in the identification process.
