The seismogenic structure of strong intraplate earthquakes in Shantou region, South China: Insights from upper crustal shear-wave velocity structure

The Shantou region, one of the most seismically active zones of Guangdong Province (South China), has experienced multiple strong earthquakes including two significant events with magnitudes greater than 7.0 occurred in 1600 and 1918, respectively. To investigate the seismogenic structures responsible for these major earthquakes and their potential triggering mechanisms, in this study, we construct a high-resolution shear-wave velocity model from surface to ∼15 km depth based on a dense nodal seismic array using ambient noise tomography. The model reveals a pronounced low-velocity zone (LVZ) at depths of 2-15 km, with a perturbation of -2 to -8%, coinciding with the northwestern extension of the Huanggangshui Fault previously identified in the offshore region. Integrating our results with previous field geological surveys and shallow reflection seismic exploration, we interpret the LVZ as a wide fault zone, potentially comprising multiple fault branches that possibly includes two NW-trending faults (i.e., the Rongjiang Fault and the Hanjiang Fault). Notably, the interaction between the Huanggangshui Fault and NE-trending Littoral Fault is suggested to have triggered the 1918 M7.3 Nan’ao earthquake. Additionally, the 1895 M6.2 earthquake seems to occur at the edge of the LVZ near the Rongjiang Fault, a possible branch of the Huanggangshui Fault, further supporting the association between this structure and seismic activity. These findings imply that the LVZ may represent a region of concentrated tectonic stress, making it a potential site for future strong earthquakes. Consequently, this area should be prioritized in seismic hazard assessments. This study provides valuable insights into the seismogenic characteristics of the Shantou region and contributes to improving seismic hazard evaluations in South China.

Experimental study on flexural behavior of precast concrete beams in-span joined with UHPC

Efficient connection design is critical for the performance and applicability of precast concrete structures. This study proposes a novel in-span connection strategy using Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) to assemble two standardized short precast concrete beams into a single unit, referred to as a Precast Beam Unit (PBU). This configuration relocates the joint from the beam ends to the mid-span, reducing local weakening and premature failure in high-stress regions while enhancing constructability. Static loading tests were conducted on five PBUs, with one cast-in-place beam serving as a control. The reinforcement ratio and the length of the UHPC corresponding to the diameter of the steel bar were employed as the main design parameters. The flexural behavior and failure mode of specimens were analyzed based on load displacement curves, crack propagation, and strain responses. Results showed that PBU-1 exhibited a 6.3 % higher ultimate flexural capacity than the cast-in-place beam. PBU-5, with a reinforcement ratio of 1.65 % demonstrated a 140.2 % higher ultimate bearing capacity compared to PBU-1 (0.64 % reinforcement ratio). PBUs also showed reduced deflection, narrower crack widths, and enhanced stiffness. The study proposed calculation methods for cracking analysis, short-term stiffness, and the normal section flexural capacity of PBU. Moreover, a finite element model developed in ABAQUS was employed to verify the damage situation and ultimate bearing capacity of the specimens, with good agreement with the experimental results. These findings confirm the safety and applicability of PBU and demonstrate its favorable connection performance.

Electro-thermal energy storage (ETES) technology has presented its great potential to efficiently consume renewable energy and increase the flexibility of power grid. This paper presents an innovative ETES system that integrates electromagnetic induction heat storage (EIHS) with moving bed heat release (MBHR). A numerical simulation method based on CFD-DEM was developed to access the system’s performance and evaluate its technical feasibility. In a studied case, the EI heater unit achieves uniform radial temperature distribution, adjustable temperature rise rate, and high particle heat storage density, while the tubular MBHE unit shows high heat transfer intensity (678.2–784.6 W/m 2 /K). The system’s power-to-power conversion efficiency is approximately 30.78 %, excluding minor power consumption. The developed system offers three operation modes and two business models for peak electricity supply. The preliminary economic evaluation indicates that model 1, using valley power, has a 5-year payback period and a 21.56 % internal rate of return ( IRR ), while model 2, using abandoned photovoltaic/wind power, shows a 10-year payback period and an 11.26 % IRR . Further sensitivity analysis suggests model 1 is more cost-effective while model 2 offers slightly better risk resistance. This work has offered some valuable insights into the advanced enhancement and development of the ETES system, as well as its future engineering applications.

The impact of biomass burning emissions in Southeast Asia on black carbon aerosols in southern China

Since 2013, China's air quality has significantly improved due to the reduction of anthropogenic emissions. The influence of long-distance transport of biomass burning emissions in Southeast Asia (BBSEA) on air quality in southern China (SC) would likely continue to increase, especially under the trend of global warming. We quantify the contribution of BBSEA to the surface and high-altitude BC concentrations in SC (two provincial capitals: Guangzhou (GZ), Guangdong, and Kunming (KM), Yunnan) in March-April 2014 and 2019 by using the GEOS-Chem global chemical transport model and its adjoint. For three severe pollution events in SC in 2014, the contributions of BBSEA to daily average BC concentrations in GZ are 0.08-0.19 μg m -3 (2%-5%) at the surface and 0.20-0.78 μg m -3 (59%-73%) at 700 hPa. In KM, the corresponding contributions are 0.27-0.54 μg m -3 (15%-33%) and 0.25-0.45 μg m -3 (28%-45%). The transport time of BBSEA to the surface of GZ (KM) is about 3-6 days (1-5 days). The shift in wind fields from southwest to west and stronger wind speeds in April likely shorten the transport time of BBSEA to SC. On March 27, 2019, the relative contributions of BBSEA to the surface BC concentrations increase by 10% in GZ and 14% in KM, compared to March 23, 2014. Our study would offer scientific support for understanding BC sources and potential improvement of air quality in SC.

Dynamic rupture directivity significantly impacts earthquake hazard and loss assessments; yet, it is often overlooked, leading to uncertainties. We developed high-resolution, broadband, deterministic scenarios for earthquake hazards and losses of the Zhujiangkou Fault (ZF) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of southern China. The calculations cover the entire physical process from fault dynamic rupture through strong ground motion propagation to quantitative loss estimations. We fully incorporate the real 3D physical fields, including fault structure, regional stress, friction conditions, inhomogeneous velocity, and topography. Results revealed higher earthquake hazards and losses triggered by the northwestern ZF segment, affecting Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Macao, and Guangzhou. The rupture directivity effect, driven by seismic wave interferences in forward propagation, leads to stark differences in hazards and losses across urban agglomerations, even under similar fault conditions. These findings help enhance the precision of earthquake risk assessments and provide practical approaches for disaster prevention.

Application of Matlab to Data Processing of Buckling Experiments

In this paper, matlab programs were written to efficiently process the experiment data for buckling and post-buckling of delaminated composite beams. In the experiments, data collected from 810 Material Test System (MTS) and from dial indicator were sampled at different frequencies, thus were not matched with each other in time. To solve this problem matlab programs were developed. It shows that using the developed program, the experiment data from the two testing systems are corresponding and truly reflect the changes of mechanical parameters in the buckling and post-buckling process of specimens in the experiments.

Study on Axial Compression Performance of GFRP Tube Reactive Power Concrete Composite Short Columns with Encased Steel

In order to study the axial compression performance of the GFRP tube reactive power concrete composite short column with encased steel, a finite element model of the composite short column was established. The constitutive models of steel, RPC and GFRP were selected. The element selection and contact method of each component were explained. The boundary condition and mesh division of the composite column were determined. Based on this, finite element verification analysis of 6 specimens was performed by ABAQUS. The load-displacement curves and the axial compression bearing capacity were obtained. By comparing with the test, the reasonability of the constitutive model and the finite element model of this kind of column is verified.

Experimental Verification on Finite Element Model of Composite Columns with Concrete Filled Steel Tube Flange

In order to study mechanical performance of composite columns with concrete-filled steel tube flange subjected to the eccentric compression, the finite element model of this kind of composite columns is established by using ABAQUS finite element software. In this paper, the reasonable material constitutive and finite element modelling method are selected to carry out numerical simulation analysis of concrete-filled steel tubular composite columns and concrete-filled square steel tubular columns. The load vertical displacement curves, load lateral deflection curves and failure modes are obtained, which are in good agreement with the existing test data. The rationality of material constitutive and finite element modelling is verified, which lays a foundation for further establishing the calculation formula of eccentric compression bearing capacity of this kind of column.

Nonlinear stability of sensor elastic element- corrugated shallow spherical shell in coupled multi-field is studied. With the equivalent orthotropic parameter obtairled by the author, the corrugated shallow spherical shell is considered as an orthotropic shallow spherical shell, and geometrical nonlinearity and transverse shear deformation are taken into account. Nonlinear governing equations are obtained. The critical load is obtained using a modified iteration method. The effect of temperature variation and shear rigidity variation on stability is analyzed.

Safety is an inevitable issue in all kinds of construction sites. The most effective way to insure human's safety is wearing safety helmet, thus whether wearing or not is a main problem of safety monitoring. This paper proposed an approach using deep learning-based computer vision techniques to detect workers (i.e., not wearing safety helmet) from image sequences shot by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Firstly training and testing dataset were created using label tools as a size of 300×300. Then a fine-tune method based on single shot multibox detector network was employed to get high accuracy of detection. The effectiveness and accuracy of methods were validated and discussed. Finally, some visualization work has been done for a deeper understanding of the network. © APWSHM 2018. All rights reserved.
