Urban land is the primary scene for economic manufacturing and services providing, through which the economic activities and trade flows amplify and cascade, interacting the natural and human systems. However, our understanding of the economic sectoral urban land metabolism remains inadequate. Here, we establish a spatially explicit sectoral urban land use inventory and a virtual land flow network for 13 cities in the Jing-Jin-Ji region in China to understand urban land use metabolism. Results show spatial heterogeneity in urban land use among industries and across spatial scales. Four cities exhibit reverse import and export roles in regional and national virtual land flow networks. It also reveals inequalities in benefit-cost and supply chain networks across cities, and a wide range of control and exploitation relationships in the region. We suggest that Beijing and Tianjin, as main beneficiaries in the regional economic network, are responsible for promoting regional sustainable development collaboration. © 2023, The Authors. The analysis of terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics, based on scarce carbon flux observations or carbon flux products simulated by reanalysis meteorological data, has great uncertainties. A more accurate understanding of carbon dynamics in Eurasia was achieved by using a carbon flux dataset (CFD) from meteorological stations with quasi-observational characteristics. The growth of net carbon uptake of ecosystems over Eurasia has been decreasing since the early 2000s. The net ecosystem productivity (NEP) increased significantly with the growth rate of 8.7 × 10−3 g C m−2d−1 yr−1 in spring, summer, and autumn (SSA) during 2003–2011 (p −2d−1 in SSA during 2003–2018, and almost all stations demonstrated carbon uptake. During 2011–2018, the number of stations experiencing reduced NEP exceeded those with increased NEP, and this ratio was higher compared to 2003–2011, mainly due to the decrease in EVI and LSWI. Soil microbes play a crucial role in myriad ecological processes in terrestrial ecosystem. With increasing nitrogen (N) loading, phosphorus (P) may become more limiting for soil microbes and these processes. However, it remains unclear to what extent P addition impacts soil microbial communities and respiration at global scale, especially under different N loadings. Therefore, we used a global meta-analysis to examine the effects of phosphorus addition on soil microbes based on 2293 paired observations from 129 studies in the world. Overall, P addition increased significantly total as well as fungal, bacterial, and actinomycete (ACT) phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), together with Gram+ bacteria (G+) and Gram- bacteria (G-) abundance regardless of N input or not. The increments were more pronounced under higher P addition rate or places with higher mean annual temperature (MAT) or mean annual precipitation (MAP). Moreover, the fungi: bacteria ratio significantly decreased along elevational gradients. Furthermore, higher P addition frequency tended to have significantly more ACT PLFAs, as well as higher G+: G-, but significantly lower fungi: bacteria ratio. However, the responses of soil microbes varied with P addition forms and ecosystem types. In addition, the responses of soil organic carbon (SOC) contents was positively correlated with those of MBC and bacterial PLFAs, and all these three parameters, in addition to fungal PLFAs, correlated positively with the response of soil respiration (Rs). Our results suggest that phosphorus addition had globally positive effects on soil microbes with different N loadings, and the positive effects of soil microbes tended to promote Rs and Rh. These results deepen our understanding of soil microbial community structure and function dynamics under increasing P deposition. They also provide extensive evidences and bases for parameterization of soil carbon cycling models incorporating microbial responses under global change. © 20

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a ubiquitous substance in the environment, are closely associated with human energy consumption, which can be released to the environment from incomplete biomass combustion or emitted from petroleum. There is currently a knowledge gap on the relationships between energy consumption structures (ECSs) and PAH contamination, especially in African countries. This study investigated the distribution, sources, and risks of 16 prioritized PAH compounds (Σ16PAHs) in Ethiopian soils, and explored the impact of ECSs on PAH contamination. The concentrations of Σ16PAHs ranged from 12.51 to 435.67 ng/g, descending across an urban-rural gradient. Based on diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, biomass combustion was the most important source. By comparing the ECSs and PAH concentrations in African countries, it was found that differences in ECSs shaped the diverse patterns of sources and concentrations of PAHs in Africa. The results of incremental lifetime cancer risk assessment suggested PAHs posed a low risk to children, adolescents, and adults. The Ethiopian government has been making continuous efforts to develop cleaner energy and optimize ECSs to decrease soil PAH concentrations and reduce potential risks. Emergency material scheduling is an essential part of disaster prevention and mitigation. This paper builds up materials scheduling model based on system dynamics, real-simulation the process of emergency material scheduling in disaster prevention and mitigation, exploring the main factors that affect a city's emergency capacity. The result shows that: the higher the scheduling capacity of government emergency material, the city's emergency capacity can reach its peak level faster. This model can predict materials scheduling speed in real-time and provide the government's emergency administrative department with a theoretical foundation to formulate reasonable disaster prevention and mitigation plans.

Impacts of nitrogen addition on nitrous oxide emission: Comparison of five nitrous oxide modules or algorithms

The contributions of long-lived nitrous oxide (N 2 O) to global climate and environment have received increasing attention. Especially, atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has substantially increased in recent decades due to the extensive use of fossil fuels in industry, which strongly stimulates the N 2 O emissions of terrestrial ecosystem. Several models have been developed to simulate the impacts of environmental factors on N 2 O emission from soil, but there are still large differences in the simulations of N 2 O emission and their responses to atmospheric deposition over global or regional scales. Using observations from N addition experiments in a subtropical forest, this study compared five widely-used N 2 O modules or algorithms (i.e. the N 2 O modules of DayCENT, PnET-N-DNDC and DyN, and the algorithm of NOE and NGAS) to investigate their performances for reproducing N 2 O emission, and especially the impacts of two forms of N additions (i.e. NH 4 + -N and NO 3 – -N, respectively) of two levels (low and high) on N 2 O emission. In general, the five modules reproduced the seasonal variations of N 2 O emission. Under the high levels of N addition compared to low ones for both NH 4 + -N and NO 3 – -N, however, not all modules can reproduce larger N 2 O emission. Relatively larger N 2 O emissions in measurements due to NH 4 + -N compared to NO 3 – -N additions were not indicated neither in all the modules. Moreover, there were substantial differences in simulating the ratios of N 2 O emission from nitrification and denitrification processes due to disagreements in the structure of these modules or algorithms. The comparison highlights the need to improve the representation of N 2 O production and diffusion processes. At the same time, it also highlights the application of WFPS in the model methodology as a key scheme that mediates the two microbial processes, i.e. nitrification and denitrification, could probably improve the performances of N 2 O models in futu

Bowen ratio (β) is the ratio of sensible heat (H) to latent heat (LE), which reflected the energy balance and partitioning process between soil, vegetation, and atmosphere. Revealing the spatial patterns of β would benefit understanding the variation of energy partitioning in terrestrial ecosystems and its reciprocal relationship with environmental change. Here, we calculated β by integrating sensible and latent heat flux values from 80 flux observation sites based on eddy covariance method in ChinaFLUX to analyze the spatial pattern and dominant factors of β in China. Results showed that terrestrial ecosystems in China had an average β of 0.64±0.47, suggesting the strong regulating effect of ecosystems on the radiative warming in China. β significantly varied with ecosystem types in which desert has the highest β (2.08) while wetland showed the lowest β (0.37). β of terrestrial ecosystems in China showed a significant latitudinal pattern, increasing linearly with the increase of latitude, and showed specific patterns in forest and cropland ecosystems. However, β did not present a clear longitudinal and vertical pattern in different ecosystems except cropland. The spatial pattern of β was dominated by vegetation factors including gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the dominant role of vegetation factors varied with the climate and soil conditions, which showing that the dominant role of GPP gradually decreased from the hot and humid subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest region to the low temperature arid temperate desert region. These findings demonstrated the spatial variation and its mechanism of terrestrial ecosystems β and provided insight into the future of vegetation mitigation of global climate change. © 2023, The Authors. 草地植被结构对于其生产和生态功能至关重要,但大尺度信息严重匮乏.本研究结合多源遥感数据和深度学习,在区域尺度上厘清了青藏高原高寒草地基于群系的植物群落结构空间格局,并比较了其历史变化.过去40年,高寒草甸在高寒草地中的比例从50%上升到69%,反映了变暖变湿的环境变化.此外,高寒草甸和高寒草原中高山嵩草草甸和紫花针茅草原的优势度分别增强到76%和92%.其中,气候因子驱动了紫花针茅草原近些年的分布;高山嵩草草甸近些年的分布则并非完全由气候驱动,人类活动可能起重要作用.本研究首次探索了区域尺度植被结构特征与历史变化,为认识青藏高原草地变化的驱动力及其空间异质性提供了新视角.

Aims Recent studies revealed convergent temperature sensitivity of ecosys-tem respiration(Re)within aquatic ecosystems and between terrestrial and aquatic *** do not know yet whether various terres-trial ecosystems have consistent or divergent temperature ***,we synthesized 163 eddy covariance flux sites across the world and examined the global variation of the apparent activation energy(Ea),which characterizes the apparent temperature sensitivity of and its interannual variability(IAV)as well as their controlling *** We used carbon fluxes and meteorological data across FLUXNET sites to calculate mean annual temperature,tempera-ture range,precipitation,global radiation,potential radiation,gross primary productivity and Re by averaging the daily values over the years in each ***,we analyzed the sites with>8 years data to examine the IAV of Ea and calculated the standard deviation of Ea across years at each site to character-ize *** Findings The results showed a widely global variation of Ea,with significantly lower values in the tropical and subtropical areas than in temperate and boreal areas,and significantly higher values in grasslands and wetlands than that in deciduous broadleaf forests and evergreen ***,spatial variations of Ea were explained by changes in temperature and an index of water availability with differing contribution of each explaining variable among climate zones and *** and the corresponding coefficient of variation of Ea decreased with increasing latitude,but increased with radiation and corresponding mean annual *** revealed patterns in the spatial and temporal variations of Ea and its controlling factors indicate divergent temperature sensitivity of Re,which could help to improve our predictive understanding of Re in response to climate change.
