Nonextensive entropy, the Tsallis-like time-dependent entropy (TDE), is developed to study the event-related potential signals ( ERPs ) in a cue, "E"-orientation discrimination task. The statistical characteristics of the TDE for different signal distributions are studied. Results indicated that with the appearance of P2 and N2, a significant decrease of TDE was correlated with the responses to small size cue which supports the previous theoretic analysis. This method provides a novel quantitative measurement for ERPs actives and may be a useful tool in signals monitoring. © 2006 Research Publishing Services.

Electronic trace fossil image retrieval based on extended direction local binary pattern

Based on the direction local binary pattern (dLBP) and the center-symmetric local binary pattern (CS-LBP), an improved direction local binary pattern (idLBP) was presented. The directionality, coarseness and contrast of a texture region were considered together in the new definition. LBP, dLBP and idLBP were firstly tested on two commonly used texture image sets. Finally, idLBP was used for electronic trace fossil image retrieval. The results show that idLBP gives the best retrieval performance in the three descriptors. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Two extended patterns, direction local binary pattern (D-LBP) and variance direction local binary pattern (vD-LBP) were introduced in the paper. More texture features are obtained in the new operators by introducing a variant threshold. The descriptors mentioned in the paper were firstly tested and evaluated on CUReT texture image database. Experimental results show that the two extended operators give better performance than D-LBP and vD-LBP respectively. Finally, the operators were used for trace fossils image retrieval and the results denote that the proposed operator, tvD-LBP is the most effective method for trace fossils image description in the four descriptors. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.

To accurately perceive sudden airflow changes during flight and avoid aviation safety risks caused by sudden weather at high altitudes, it is necessary to invert and reconstruct the wind field during flight. Based on the random sample consensus estimation, the improved Least Squares algorithm is used to fit the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data. Firstly, the vertical wind profile is constructed by inverting the wind vectors at different altitude levels at the fixed airport location and compared with the meteorological data of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to verify the feasibility and accuracy of the algorithm. Then, the wind field under the complete track of a specific flight is reconstructed to obtain the wind field distribution along the route. Finally, regional wind fields at different altitudes are reconstructed using multiaircraft data in a fixed range. The experimental results show that this method can better reflect the real complex wind field structure. © 2021 IEEE

This paper presents a method for recognizing human behavior in static images based on LLC and GIST features. The feature points in the image is densely located in sub-region of images and we extract SIFT feature from each sub-region. Then using the LLC method to encode the extracted dense SIFT features of each sub-region and each feature point descriptor is assigned to several nearest words, so that each descriptor can be expressed by the linear correlation coefficient of vocabulary. In order to increase the spatial information, we use the SPM model to divide the image into many blocks under different levels. We can get the pooled feature from each sub-region using the max pooling method. Then these pooled features from sub-region are concatenated and normalized as the final pooled features. In order to get GIST features, we divide the image into blocks and construct the Gabor filter group of 32 different scales and directions. Then each Gabor filter in the Gabor filter group does convolution operation with image blocks and we take the mean value of each blocks under each Gabor filter as the feature description. The features from each block under each Gabor filter are concatenated and normalized as the final GIST feature representation of the image. Then concatenating the final pooled features and the GIST features and take as the final feature representation. Finally, the intersection kernel function of SVM is used for classification. We performed experiments on several databases. By contrast, this algorithm has a good effect in accuracy and efficiency. © 2017 IEEE.

Face recognition (FR) systems are easily constrained by complex environmental situations in the wild. To ensure the accuracy of FR systems, face image quality assessment (FIQA) is applied to reject low-quality face image unsuitable for recognition. Face quality can be defined as the accuracy or confidence of face images being correctly recognized by FR systems, which is desired to be consistent with recognition results. However, current FIQA methods show more or less inconsistency with face recognition due to the following four biases, including implicit constraint, quality labels, regression models, and backbone networks. In order to reduce such biases and enhance the consistency between FR and FIQA, this paper proposes a FIAQ method based on Learning to rank (L2R) algorithm and vision Transformer named L2RT-FIQA. L2RT-FIQA consists of three parts: relative quality labels, L2R framework, and vision Transformer backbone. Specifically, we utilize normalized intra-class and inter-class angular distance to generate relative quality labels;we employ L2R model to focus more on the quality order rather than the absolute quality value;we apply unpretrained vision transformer as our backbone to improve generalization and global information learning. Experimental results show our L2RT-FIQA effectively reduces the aforementioned four kinds of biases and outperforms other state-of-the-art FIQA methods on several challenging benchmarks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Contour extraction model introducing contrast adaptive characteristics based on visual pathway

Effectively extracting image subject contours holds significant importance for subsequent image processing tasks. Recognizing the pivotal role of contrast features in contour characterization, this paper proposes a novel contour extraction model with contrast adaptive characteristics, inspired by visual perception simulation visual pathways. Firstly, leveraging the color antagonism traits of retinal ganglion cells, we construct a color image contrast calculation model to enhance the representation of visual information contrast. Furthermore, drawing upon the feed-forward impact of the retina on Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN) cells, we introduce a contrast gain control mechanism to extract multi-directional primary contour responses. Secondly, employing the LIF neuron network to simulate the lateral geniculate body's information flow processing mechanism, we encode visual information via pulse firing to eliminate redundant contour details. Then, by considering the primary visual cortex (V1) cell's receptive field size variation with contrast, we devise a contrast-adaptive dynamic receptive field model. Additionally, we develop a texture suppression model based on the orientation/contrast disparity between the receptive field model's center and periphery. Finally, integrating the primary contour response and the image obtained through the inhibition model, we fuse features to derive the final image subject target contour. This study employs the BSDS500 dataset and the RuG40 dataset for experimentation. Comparative analysis against mainstream methods demonstrates our approach's superior ability to retain the main image outline while suppressing non-edge textures, with P-value indicators for contour detection of 0.58 and 0.50, respectively. Distributed video coding (DVC) is a novel video coding paradigm. One approach to DVC is Wyner-Ziv distributed video coding. The accuracy of the correlation noise model can influence the performance of the video coder directly. In order to enhance the accuracy of the distribution model, EM algorithm based mixture Laplace-uniform distribution model and basic Laplace-uniform distribution model for DCT alternating current coefficients are established. Then the model is selected adaptively using fuzzy inference. Experimental results suggest that the proposed mixture correlation noise model can describe the heavy tail and sudden change of the noise accurately at high rate and make significant improvement on the coding efficiency compared with the DISCOVER's noise model. Meanwhile, fuzzy inference based adaptive noise model selection method can reduce the operation complexity to some extent, while not influencing rate-distortion performance.

This paper proposes an improved image interpolation method based on the soft-decision adaptive interpolation (SAI) algorithm. Natural images often contain repeatable patterns and structures throughout the image, which is called non-local property. We can use this non-local strategy to improve the interpolation quality by better estimating the model parameters and Lagrangian multiplier. There are two steps in our method. In the first step, similar patches of the given block are found in the initialized high resolution image, and the model parameters can be determined properly using the expanded piecewise auto regression (PAR) model and non-local spatial constraint. In the second step, the self-similarity of patches across the high and low resolution images is exploited to solve the Lagrangian multiplier λ, thus to make the data estimation robust. Experiments indicate that the improved method can achieve good results both subjectively and objectively.

This paper presents a global 3D feature descriptor for object recognition and grasping. The proposed descriptor stems from the clustered viewpoint feature histogram (CVFH) feature descriptor. Since the CVFH feature descriptor relies on shape information only, it obtains a poor performance when recognizing the objects with similar shapes. In order to improve the robustness and accuracy of object recognition, we extend CVFH feature descriptor with color information. Then this new global 3D feature descriptor is tested for multiple classes of 3D object classification by using support vector machines (SVM), and it is evaluated with a public dataset and real scenes respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed descriptor outperforms the CVFH feature descriptor in terms of recognition rate. Finally we utilize the proposed descriptor on our grasping system to recognize and grasp the objects, showing that the grasping system can accomplish the tasks well. © 2017 IEEE.
