The increasing growth of communication has fostered research on various methods to obviate noise from affecting the data transmitted over the link. Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) has gained popularity because of its property of exhibiting near Shannon limit performance when interpreted via iterative probabilistic algorithm. This paper presents a high performance and an enhanced LDPC based algorithm, for channel coding audio signals. The algorithm is designed so as to facilitate adaptive feature as a function of input audio size. It generates an encoded stream of data by arranging bits into data vectors and processing it with the designed LDPC matrix. The modulation scheme considered for transmitting the audio signal is Binary Phase Shift keying (BPSK). The audio signal recovered at various Signal to Noise ratios (SNRs) is illustrated. The performance analysis of the algorithm delineates improved results for AWGN noise. The Bit Error Rate (BER) is estimated at different SNRs and BER Vs SNR graph is plotted to determine the efficacy of the algorithm.

Here we report a controllable four DNA sub-tiles, self-assembling into 4-arm DNA tiles, under control of a DNA strand displacement based on DNA sequential circuit. The motif is encoded, compiled and simulated successively in Visual DSD software. The simulation results show that the four kinds of sub-tiles in the motif combine to their neighbors one after another with a certain time delay and finally form into 4-arm DNA tiles. The formation of the 4th arm of a 4-arm DNA tile indicates that all the 4-arm DNA tiles have been assembled, which implies high productivity of the 4-arm DNA tiles. We also analyze the time responses of the DNA sequence circuit by adjusting the concentration proportions of reactants and/or ordering bind and unbind rates of toeholds in simulation. These simulation results demonstrate that high concentration proportions of reactants and/or toeholds reacting at ascending order rates can shorten the time response more sharply than that low concentration proportion of reactants and/or in a descending order. The motif furthers the integration for DNA sub-tile self-assembly and DNA strand displacement. Copyright © 2015 American Scientific Publishers.

Edge detection is the most popular and common choices for cell image segmentation, in which local searching strategies are commonly used. In spite of their computational efficiency, traditional edge detectors, however, may either produce discontinued edges or rely heavily on initializations. In this paper, we propose a bacterial foraging based edge detection (BFED) algorithm for cell image segmentation. We model the gradients of intensities as the nutrient concentration and propel bacteria to forage along nutrient-rich locations via mimicking the behavior of Escherichia coli, including the chemotaxis, swarming, reproduction, elimination and dispersal. As a nature-inspired evolutionary technique, this algorithm can identify the desired edges and mark them as the tracks of bacteria. We have evaluated the proposed algorithm against the Canny, SUSAN, Verma's and an active contour model (ACM) based edge detectors on both synthetic and real cell images. Our results suggest that the BFED algorithm can identify boundaries more effectively and provide more accurate cell image segmentation.

There are two main types of tests to assess one's bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, which are writing tests and scenario tests. However, these two methods are subjective and time-consuming and not suitable for large-scale testing. The paper proposed a new assess method to assess bodily-kinesthetic intelligence based on the writing intelligence test items. The method is designed with the computer virtual reality technology. The result shows the method can get better reliability and validity. And the evaluation process is easier to realize. © 2014 WIT Press.

In this paper we propose the deep bidirectional long short-term memory recurrent neural network (DBLSTM-RNN) based single modal and multi-modal affect recognition frameworks. In the single modal framework DBLSTM with moving average (MA), audio or visual features are input into the DBLSTM-RNN model, whose output estimations of a dimension are smoothed by the moving average filter. After the smoothed estimations are expanded to the frame rate of the ground truth labels, another MA is adopted for smoothing the final results. In the multi-modal framework DBLSTM-DBLSTM-MA, the initial estimations from the audio and visual modalities via the first layer of DBLSTM-RNNs are input into a second layer of DBLSTM-RNN, whose outputs are smoothed by MA. The smoothed estimations are then expanded to the frame rate of the ground truth labels and smoothed again by another MA. Affect recognition experiments are carried out on the training set and development set of the AVEC2014 database, results show that the proposed DBLSTM-MA framework outperforms linear regression, support vector regression (SVR), and BLSTM for single modal dimension estimation. For audio visual multi-modal affect recognition, DBLSTM-DBLSTM-MA obtains better or comparable performance than the state of the art results in the competition of AVEC2014, with the average correlation coefficient (COR) reaches 0.599 on the Freeform database, 0.630 on the Northwind database, and 0.615 on the Freeform-Northwind database.

Understanding social signals is a very important aspect of human communication and interaction and has therefore attracted increased attention from various research areas. Among the different types of social signals, particular attention has been paid to facial expression of emotions and its automated analysis from image sequences. Automated facial expression analysis is a very challenging task due to the complex three-dimensional deformation and motion of the face associated to the facial expressions and the loss of 3D information during the image formation process. As a consequence, retrieving 3D spatio-temporal facial information from image sequences is essential for automated facial expression analysis. In this paper, we propose a framework for retrieving three-dimensional facial structure, motion and spatio-temporal features from monocular image sequences. First, we estimate monocular 3D scene flow by retrieving the facial structure using shape-from-shading (SFS) and combine it with 2D optical flow. Secondly, based on the retrieved structure and motion of the face, we extract spatio-temporal features for automated facial expression analysis. Experimental results illustrate the potential of the proposed 3D facial information retrieval framework for facial expression analysis, i.e. facial expression recognition and facial action-unit recognition on a benchmark dataset. This paves the way for future research on monocular 3D facial expression analysis.

An approach to create fixation density maps(FDM) for stereoscopic images is proposed in this paper, overcoming the shortages of current methods. A new representation of stereoscopic images like Computed Tomography (CT) is used, which can show more information such as depth and discomfort zone. Apart from this, we follow the protogenetic 2D calibration of eyetracker by a 3D offline calibration to gain accuracy of 3D gaze points, tuned to a particular user. We combine these two parts through classifying eyetracking data to several depth planes which are segmented in the procedure of the representation method like CT, and obtain the fixation distribution in different depth levels for a stereoscopic image.

This paper presents an approach for dense depth estimation taking the input of a trinocular stereo. The approach works with a global energy minimization framework based on Markov Random Field models. The occlusion and spatial consistency constraints are explicitly considered in an iterative fashion. Depth maps are initialized by belief propagation using AD-Census metric, and then refined by Mean Shift Segments Fusion. We further incorporate the occlusion constraint for trinocular stereo to refine our depth map. In order to make the inference tractable, we implement our algorithm in an iterative scheme where the disparity map and occlusion map of each view are updated iteratively. Finally, three disparity maps corresponding to a trinocular stereo are estimated. Our approach addresses the problems such as untextured regions, occlusions, inconsistency in spatial region in a unified framework. The experimental results show our approach works well on trinocular stereo.

Compressed sensing (CS) has been applied to the field of sub-sampled magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction (CS-MRI). Fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm (FISTA) is an effective method for CS-MR images reconstruction. To investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, we applied it to the under-sampling MR images gained by different MRI scanning sequences. We found the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) of reconstructed MRI with varying sampling ratios diminished from Axial T1 weighted images (Ax T1) (45.13±12.97 dB), Axial T2 weighted images (Ax T2) (42.8 ± 14.95 dB), FLAIR (41.74 ± 14.15 dB), Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) (40.23 ±17.40 dB) and Sagittal T2 weighted images (Sag T2) (36.28±12.32 dB), but there was no significant difference among the groups. In addition, the changes to the elapsed time of them was minor, Ax T1 (1.09±0.13 s), Ax T2 (1.30±0.13s), FLAIR (1.02±0.12s), DWI (1.07±0.13s) and Sag T2 (1.12±0.07s). Our results confirmed the stability of the proposed fast MRI reconstruction method for different scanning sequences. Further efforts are still needed to design the clinical sequence with sub-sampled acquisition strategy which may be a developing technique with clinical value.
