In the past decade, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown prominence for semantic segmentation. Although CNN models have very impressive performance, the ability to capture global representation is still insufficient, which results in suboptimal results. Recently, Transformer achieved huge success in NLP tasks, demonstrating its advantages in modeling long-range dependency. Recently, Transformer has also attracted tremendous attention from computer vision researchers who reformulate the image processing tasks as a sequence-to-sequence prediction but resulted in deteriorating local feature details. In this work, we propose a lightweight real-time semantic segmentation network called LETNet. LETNet combines a U-shaped CNN with Transformer effectively in a capsule embedding style to compensate for respective deficiencies. Meanwhile, the elaborately designed Lightweight Dilated Bottleneck (LDB) module and Feature Enhancement (FE) module cultivate a positive impact on training from scratch simultaneously. Extensive experiments performed on challenging datasets demonstrate that LETNet achieves superior performances in accuracy and efficiency balance. Specifically, It only contains 0.95M parameters and 13.6G FLOPs but yields 72.8% mIoU at 120 FPS on the Cityscapes test set and 70.5% mIoU at 250 FPS on the CamVid test dataset using a single RTX 3090 GPU. The application of CBCT systems in intraoperative environments has become increasingly common, but concurrent CBCT systems are unsuitable for situations that require a large longitudinal imaging FoV, such as orthopedics. To increase longitudinal coverage, we developed a dual-source CBCT (DS-CBCT) system in which two ray sources are symmetrically placed along the central plane. After further analyzing its geometric characteristics, we propose an analytical reconstruction algorithm termed DT-FDK specialized for DS-CBCT, which combines cone-beam rebinning and two rays with smaller cone angles among the four conjugate rays to further suppress cone beam artifacts. The system design and reconstruction algorithm are tested on both simulated and real-scanned data. Results show that the DS-CBCT can expand the effective imaging volume by 37.1% compared to single-source CBCT systems. The reconstructed images by DT-FDK also show improved image quality compared to traditional reconstruction algorithms.

Automatic Crack Detection on Road Pavements Using Encoder-Decoder Architecture

Automatic crack detection from images is an important task that is adopted to ensure road safety and durability for Portland cement concrete (PCC) and asphalt concrete (AC) pavement. Pavement failure depends on a number of causes including water intrusion, stress from heavy loads, and all the climate effects. Generally, cracks are the first distress that arises on road surfaces and proper monitoring and maintenance to prevent cracks from spreading or forming is important. Conventional algorithms to identify cracks on road pavements are extremely time-consuming and high cost. Many cracks show complicated topological structures, oil stains, poor continuity, and low contrast, which are difficult for defining crack features. Therefore, the automated crack detection algorithm is a key tool to improve the results. Inspired by the development of deep learning in computer vision and object detection, the proposed algorithm considers an encoder-decoder architecture with hierarchical feature learning and dilated convolution, named U-Hierarchical Dilated Network (U-HDN), to perform crack detection in an end-to-end method. Crack characteristics with multiple context information are automatically able to learn and perform end-to-end crack detection. Then, a multi-dilation module embedded in an encoder-decoder architecture is proposed. The crack features of multiple context sizes can be integrated into the multi-dilation module by dilation convolution with different dilatation rates, which can obtain much more cracks information. Finally, the hierarchical feature learning module is designed to obtain a multi-scale features from the high to low- level convolutional layers, which are integrated to predict pixel-wise crack detection. Some experiments on public crack databases using 118 images were performed and the results were compared with those obtained with other methods on the same images. Facial Expression Analysis (FEA) plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating early-stage neurological disorders (NDs) like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Manual FEA is hindered by expertise, time, and training requirements, while automatic methods confront difficulties with real patient data unavailability, high computations, and irrelevant feature extraction. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel approach: an efficient, lightweight convolutional block attention module (CBAM) based deep learning network (DLN) to aid doctors in diagnosing ND patients. The method comprises two stages: data collection of real ND patients, and pre-processing, involving face detection and an attention-enhanced DLN for feature extraction and refinement. Extensive experiments with validation on real patient data showcase compelling performance, achieving an accuracy of up to 73.2%. Despite its efficacy, the proposed model is lightweight, occupying only 3MB, making it suitable for deployment on resource-constrained mobile healthcare devices. Moreover, the method exhibits significant advancements over existing FEA approaches, holding tremendous promise in effectively diagnosing and treating ND patients. By accurately recognizing emotions and extracting relevant features, this approach empowers medical professionals in early ND detection and management, overcoming the challenges of manual analysis and heavy models. In this paper, we revisit the interval observer design problem of harmonic oscillator system with unknown but bounded external disturbance and measurement noise. With the bounding information of the external disturbance and measurement noise, a high-gain interval observer is firstly defined and constructed for the harmonic oscillator system to realize the interval estimation on the state and the robust control of the system. Then, a switched high-gain interval observer is proposed to reduce the influence of the measurement noise for a tighter interval width on the state estimation. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to verify the theoretical results.

Multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have progressed significantly in recent decades, butmost of them are designed to solve unconstrained multiobjective optimization problems. In fact, many real-world multiobjective problems contain a number of constraints. To promote research on constrained multiobjective optimization, we first propose a problem classification scheme with three primary types of difficulty, which reflect various types of challenges presented by real-world optimization problems, in order to characterize the constraint functions in constrained multiobjective optimization problems (CMOPs). These are feasibility-hardness, convergence-hardness, and diversity-hardness. We then develop a general toolkit to construct difficulty adjustable and scalable CMOPs (DAS-CMOPs, or DAS-CMaOPs when the number of objectives is greater than three) with three types of parameterized constraint functions developed to capture the three proposed types of difficulty. In fact, the combination of the three primary constraint functions with different parameters allows the construction of a large variety of CMOPs, with difficulty that can be defined by a triplet, with each of its parameters specifying the level of one of the types of primary difficulty. Furthermore, the number of objectives in this toolkit can be scaled beyond three. Based on this toolkit, we suggest nine difficulty adjustable and scalable CMOPs and nine CMaOPs, to be called DAS-CMOP1-9 and DAS-CMaOP1-9, respectively. To evaluate the proposed test problems, two popular CMOEAs—MOEA/D-CDP (MOEA/D with constraint dominance principle) and NSGA-II-CDP (NSGA-II with constraint dominance principle) and two popular constrainedmany-objective evolutionary algorithms (CMaOEAs)—C-MOEA/DD and C-NSGA-III—are used to compare performance on DAS-CMOP1-9 and DAS-CMaOP1-9 with a variety of difficulty triplets, respectively. DNA-based data storage has been attracting significant attention due to its extremely high data storage density, low power consumption, and long duration compared to conventional data storage media. Despite the recent advancements in DNA data storage technology, significant challenges remain. In particular, various types of errors can occur during the processes of DNA synthesis, storage, and sequencing, including substitution errors, insertion errors, and deletion errors. Furthermore, the entire oligo may be lost. In this work, we report a DNA-based data storage architecture that incorporates efficient channel coding schemes, including different types of error-correcting codes (ECCs) and constrained codes, for both the inner coding and outer coding for the DNA data storage channel. We also carried out large scale experiments to validate our proposed DNA-based data storage architecture. Specifically, 1.61 and 1.69 MB data were encoded into 30,000 oligos each, with information densities of 1.731 and 1.815, respectively. It has been found that the stored information can be fully recovered without any error at average coverages of 4.5 and 6.0, respectively. This experiment achieved the highest net information density and lowest coverage among existing DNA-based data storage experiments (with standard DNA), with data recovery rates and coverage approaching theoretical optima. EWT: Efficient Wavelet-Transformer for Single image Denoising

Transformer-based image denoising methods have achieved encouraging results in the past year. However, it must uses linear operations to model long-range dependencies, which greatly increases model inference time and consumes GPU storage space. Compared with convolutional neural network-based methods, current Transformer-based image denoising methods cannot achieve a balance between performance improvement and resource consumption. In this paper, we propose an Efficient Wavelet Transformer (EWT) for image denoising. Specifically, we use Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Inverse Wavelet Transform (IWT) for downsampling and upsampling, respectively. This method can fully preserve the image features while reducing the image resolution, thereby greatly reducing the device resource consumption of the Transformer model. Furthermore, we propose a novel Dual-stream Feature Extraction Block (DFEB) to extract image features at different levels, which can further reduce model inference time and GPU memory usage. Experiments show that our method speeds up the original Transformer by more than 80%, reduces GPU memory usage by more than 60%, and achieves excellent denoising results. Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission was the first L-band radiometer launched in 2010 and is operational for retrieving global scale soil moisture and Vegetation Optical Depth (VOD). SMOS-INRA-CESBIO (SMOS-IC) version-2 is the latest retrieval algorithm for SMOS radiometers that outperforms existing SMOS retrieval algorithms. Research is underway to enhance the SMOS-IC product by improving surface roughness information that influences soil moisture and VOD retrievals. In the present study, we developed a new global parameterization of soil roughness using SMOS-IC retrievals. For this purpose, we retrieved the soil moisture and surface roughness (through the Hr parameter) values over bare soils using the SMOS-IC algorithm. A Random Forest (RF) model was trained with soil textural and terrain properties as inputs (explanatory variables) to model Hr over bare soils. Later, we extrapolated the Hr values obtained over bare soils to a global scale using the RF model. The newly calibrated Hr values were further used in the SMOS-IC algorithm for soil moisture and VOD retrievals (SMOS-IC v2.1). The SMOS-IC v2.1, the soil moisture product, is wetter than the original SMOS-IC v2 product and has improved performance compared to in situ ISMN soil moisture and modeled ECMWF soil moisture data sets. Regarding VOD, the SMOS-IC v2.1 VOD product showed improved spatial correlation with the reference aboveground biomass product. In addition, SMOS-IC v2.1 VOD product showed improved temporal correlation with MODIS NDVI over low-to-moderate vegetated regions.
