The 3-D modeling of heads by using optical triangulation techniques is of great interest in the context of virtual reality, telecommunication and computer animation. This paper presents a structured light-based system mainly for human heads. It is named "3-D Laser Color Scanner" (3DLCS). A 3-D model is obtained with a cylindrical scan. The laser beam is switched on and off using a "light valve" and two successive CCD frames are captured, one with the laser line showing and one without. We can simplify the laser line extracting by subtracting these two images. In this system, two CCD cameras are used to avoid occlusion problems. Color information is read from the CCD when the laser light is absent. Since traditional laser scanner will miss the range data in the low-reflectance areas such as the hair area of human bead, a shape from silhouette algorithm is presented to overcome this problem. Finally, we give some results using our system. The resulting model is suitable for many applications. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A noise erosion operator based on partial differential equation (PDE) is introduced, which has an excellent ability of noise removal and edge preservation for two-dimensional (2D) gradient data. The operator is applied to estimate a new diffusion coefficient. Experimental results demonstrate that anisotropic diffusion based on this new erosion operator can efficiently reduce noise and sharpen object boundaries.

This paper proposes a new post-processing algorithm with edge preserving. To control the granular and edge preserving in the process of post-processing, we introduce a new potential function. To avoid the non-linear obstacle, the object energy;is converted with half-quadratic regularization. At last, the implementation of the algorithm is improved to speed up the computation. Experiments show our method can achieve the design object that effectively remove artifacts at the same time maintain the edges.

In order to obtain high quality millimeter wave radiometric images, intensive studies are needed. This paper describes the antenna scanning mode and the image displaying method of 8mm Ground Radiometric Imaging System (GRIS) and compares two different image displaying methods. Optical concentration using a microlens with high diffractive efficiency is an important method to improve the fill factor and performances of visible charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors. In this paper, a 516 x 516 element diffractive microlens array (MLA) on the quartz substrate is designed based on scalar diffraction theory and fabricated by submicrometer photolithography technology and magnetically enhanced reactive ion etching. The integration procedures between the MLA and CCD chip are presented. The fill factor of the visible CCD with the MLA increases by a factor of 2.4 in comparison with that of CCD without the MLA. The measuring results show that the large-scale diffractive MLA is able,to improve the detecting sensitivity of CCD sensors.

Moment invariants are important shape descriptors in computer vision. The method of decomposing the trigonometric function is suggested to obtain various moment invariants. Based on this method, the "multi-filter" algorithm is introduced as an efficient way to generate large numbers of moment invariants. A great deal of repeated computation on sub-polynomial is avoided. General explicit constructions of basic moment invariants are also provided. Furthermore, the proposed magnitude-normalized method makes invariants more stable and easier for classification. A novel VLSI architecture based on an improved lifting algorithm, which can be reconfigurable for 56 and 9/7 wavelet transforms, was proposed in this paper. The improved lifting algorithm, exploiting the parallelism of multiplication and addition operations based on the conventional lifting scheme, efficiently reduces the critical path delay. The systolic and the embedded pipeline techniques were adopted to optimize the design of the architecture, which reduced significantly the hardware complexity and power consumption of the design. Moreover, the proposed architecture works in serial input fashion, resulting that the accessed memory only needs single read port and single write port, and can be easily extended to implementation of line-based architecture for 2-D DWT.

Infrared charge coupled device (IRCCD) integration with microlens array is an effective method for improving the detecting sensitivity of IRCCD sensors. In this paper, we present the diffractive microlens array (MLA), which is manufactured by the submicron photolithography technology and magnetically enhanced reactive ion etching (MERIE) on infrared quartz substrate, The integration procedure between microlens array and PtSi Schottky-barrier IRCCD chip is introduced in detail. The optical response of IRCCD sensor with microlens array is tested and the average response increases 0.23 in the spectral range of 1.2similar to5.0 mum. The measuring results show that the large-scale diffractive microlens array is able to improve the detecting sensitivity of IRCCD and that the integration technology mentioned is available.
