IR Net: information restriction and information recovery for accurate binary neural networks

Weight and activation binarization can efficiently compress deep neural networks and accelerate model inference, but they cause severe accuracy degradation. Existing optimization methods for binary neural networks (BNNs) focus on fitting full-precision networks to reduce quantization errors and suffer from a tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency. In contrast, considering information loss and the mismatch between model capacity and input information quantity caused by network binarization, we propose Information Restriction and Information Recovery Network (IR $$^2$$ Net) to stimulate the potential of BNNs and achieve improved network accuracy by restricting the input information and recovering feature information. The proposed approach includes (1) information restriction, which evaluates the feature information extracted from the input by a BNN, discards some of the information it cannot focus on, and reduces the amount of the input information to match the model capacity; and (2) information recovery: due to the information loss incurred during forward propagation, the extracted feature information of the network is not sufficient for supporting accurate classification. Shallow feature maps with richer information are selected, and these feature maps are fused with the final feature maps to recover the extracted feature information and further enhance the model capacity to match the amount of input information. In addition, the computational cost is reduced by streamlining the information recovery method to strike a better tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach still achieves comparable accuracy even with a $$\sim$$ 10x floating-point operations (FLOPs) reduction for ResNet-18. This work addresses the problem of recursive state estimation for networked control systems with unknown nonlinearities and binary-encoding mechanisms (BEMs). To enhance transmission reliability and reduce network resource consumption, BEMs are used to convert measurement signals into binary bit strings (BBSs) of limited length, which are then transmitted to the estimator through noisy communication channels. During transmission, random bit errors may occur in the BBSs due to channel noise. For the considered nonlinear networked control systems affected by random bit errors, a neural-network (NN)-based recursive estimation strategy is proposed, where an NN with a time-varying tuning scalar is employed to approximate the unknown nonlinearity of the networked control systems. By using the proposed strategy, the upper bounds of the estimation error of the system state and the trace of the estimation error of the NN weight (NNW) are first derived. These bounds are then minimized by recursively designing both the estimator gain matrix and the tuning scalar of the NNW. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation strategy is demonstrated through a numerical example.

Underwater pressure-bearing structures are produced in practice by means of pressure self-enhancement methods to improve stress distribution and enhance pressure-bearing performance. On the other hand, the pairs equation shows that stress is an important factor influencing the degradation of the structure. In fact, improving the stress distribution will not only improve the pressure-bearing performance, but will have an impact on the life degradation trend. Thus, pressure self-enhancement affects structural life by changing the stress distribution. With this in mind, this paper considers the effect of pressure self-enhancement on the service time of subsea structures and a Bayesian network (BN) based prediction method for the remaining useful life (RUL) of underwater self-enhanced structures is proposed. The method also takes into account the influence of multiple sources of structural factors to predict the RUL of the structure more accurately. The life degradation process of all-electric Christmas tree valve actuator as case study. The prediction results are compared with literature data to verify the correctness of the method. The results have implications for guidance on the O&M assurance of underwater production systems. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the impact of African swine fever, the survival rate of domestic pigs has sharply decreased, and pork prices continue to rise. Many unscrupulous elements obtain illegal profits by avoiding inspection and quarantine, processing sick and dead pigs, and injecting water, etc. Unquarantined meat products pose serious food safety risks. In this context, we propose a machine learning based risk identification method for illegal slaughter of live pigs. Firstly, we use the RetinaNet algorithm to detect live pig transport vehicles and use a dual residual network to Super-Resolution the vehicle area in the detected image to improve facial clarity. Subsequently, the ArcFace algorithm is used to match the facial information with the ex-convicts, and finally, the Location of vehicles passing through, time, frequency and facial analysis results are combined for calculation and scoring and provide the risk warning for illegal slaughter of live pigs. © 2023 IEEE.

A novel super-twisting control method is proposed for a class of third-order systems with matched Lipschitz disturbance in this paper. The proposed method ensures finite-time convergence to the fourth-order sliding set, by using a homogeneous, continuously differentiable and strict Lyapunov function. Finally, numerical simulation results are shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Previous resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) analyses of the basal ganglia in Parkinson's disease heavily relied on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) atlases. However, subcortical structures are characterized by subtle contrast differences, making their accurate delineation challenging on T1WI. In this study, we aimed to introduce and validate a method that incorporates quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) into the rs-fMRI analytical pipeline to achieve precise subcortical nuclei segmentation and improve the stability of RSFC measurements in Parkinson's disease. A total of 321 participants (148 patients with Parkinson's Disease and 173 normal controls) were enrolled. We performed cross-modal registration at the individual level for rs-fMRI to QSM (FUNC2QSM) and T1WI (FUNC2T1), *** consistency and accuracy of resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) measurements in two registration approaches were assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient and mutual information. Bootstrap analysis was performed to validate the stability of the RSFC differences between Parkinson's disease and normal controls. RSFC-based machine learning models were constructed for Parkinson's disease classification, using optimized hyperparameters (RandomizedSearchCV with 5-fold cross-validation). The consistency of RSFC measurements between the two registration methods was poor, whereas the QSM-guided approach showed better mutual information values, suggesting higher registration accuracy. The disruptions of RSFC identified with the QSM-guided approach were more stable and reliable, as confirmed by bootstrap analysis. In classification models, the QSM-guided method consistently outperformed the T1WI-guided method, achieving higher test-set ROC-AUC values (FUNC2QSM: 0.87–0.90, FUNC2T1: 0.67–0.70). The QSM-guided approach effectively enhanced the accuracy of subcortical segmentation and the stability of RSFC measurement, thus facilitating future biomarker development in Parkinso

Multi-modal fusion is imperative to the implementation of reliable object detection and tracking in complex environments. Exploiting the synergy of heterogeneous modal information endows perception systems the ability to achieve more comprehensive, robust, and accurate performance. As a nucleus concern in wireless-vision collaboration, radar-camera fusion has prompted prospective research directions owing to its extensive applicability, complementarity, and compatibility. Nonetheless, there still lacks a systematic survey specifically focusing on deep fusion of radar and camera for object detection and tracking. To fill this void, we embark on an endeavor to comprehensively review radar-camera fusion in a holistic way. First, we elaborate on the fundamental principles, methodologies, and applications of radar-camera fusion perception. Next, we delve into the key techniques concerning sensor calibration, modal representation, data alignment, and fusion operation. Furthermore, we provide a detailed taxonomy covering the research topics related to object detection and tracking in the context of radar and camera technologies. Finally, we discuss the emerging perspectives in the field of radar-camera fusion perception and highlight the potential areas for future research. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. We consider the low rank matrix completion problem over finite fields. This problem has been extensively studied in the domain of real/complex numbers, however, to the best of authors' knowledge, there exists merely one efficient algorithm to tackle the problem in the binary field, due to Saunderson et al. [1]. In this paper, we improve upon the theoretical guarantees for the algorithm provided in [1]. Furthermore, we formulate a new graphical model for the matrix completion problem over the finite field of size q, Fq, and present a message passing (MP) based approach to solve this problem. The proposed algorithm is the first one for the considered matrix completion problem over finite fields of arbitrary size. Our proposed method has a significantly lower computational complexity, reducing it from O(n2r+3) in [1] down to O(n2) (where, the underlying matrix has dimension n × n and r denotes its rank), while also improving the performance. This study addresses linear attacks on remote state estimation within the context of a constrained alarm rate. Smart sensors, which are equipped with local Kalman filters, transmit innovations instead of raw measurements through a wireless communication network. This transmission is vulnerable to malicious data interception and manipulation by attackers. The aim of this research is to identify the optimal attack strategy that degrades the system performance while adhering to stealthiness constraints. A notable innovation of this paper is the direct association of the attack’s stealthiness with the alarm rate, diverging from traditional approaches that rely on the covariance of the innovation or the Kullback–Leibler divergence, which are conventional metrics that have been extensively explored in previous studies. Our findings reveal that the optimal attack strategy exhibits some structural characteristics in systems of low dimensions. The performance of the proposed attack strategy is demonstrated through numerical examples.
