Manga is a fashionable Japanese-style comic form that is composed of black-and-white strokes and is generally displayed as raster images on digital devices. Typical mangas have simple textures, wide lines, and few color gradients, which are vectorizable natures to enjoy the merits of vector graphics, e.g., adaptive resolutions and small file sizes. In this paper, we propose MARVEL (MAnga’s Raster to VEctor Learning), a primitive-wise approach for vectorizing raster mangas by Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). Unlike previous learning-based methods which predict vector parameters for an entire image, MARVEL introduces a new perspective that regards an entire manga as a collection of basic primitives—stroke lines, and designs a DRL model to decompose the target image into a primitive sequence for achieving accurate vectorization. To improve vectorization accuracies and decrease file sizes, we further propose a stroke accuracy reward to predict accurate stroke lines, and a pruning mechanism to avoid generating erroneous and repeated strokes. Extensive subjective and objective experiments show that our MARVEL can generate impressive results and reaches the state-of-the-art level. Lyapunov-based Singular Perturbation Results in the Framework of Hybrid Systems ⁎

Stability properties of singularly perturbed hybrid systems are investigated via Lyapunov functions with assistance from the invariance principle. Both continuously differentiable Lyapunov functions and non-smooth Lyapunov functions are considered. In each case, under appropriate assumptions, uniform asymptotic stability and uniform global asymptotic stability are established. An estimate of the basin of attraction is given for the former property. Two examples are given to illustrate the proposed theoretical results based on continuously differentiable Lyapunov functions. In addition, one example for switched learning inclusions with unstable modes is given to show the effectiveness of the results obtained based on non-smooth Lyapunov functions.

Trajectory generation is a fundamental problem for successful robotic grasping. However, most of the existing work dealt with this problem using supervised learning with a prescribed model. It prevents the developed grasp strategies from being used for new unknown scenarios. In this paper, inspired by the success of the reinforcement learning method, we developed a new method which optimizes grasp trajectories using a policy search method. An important advantage of the proposed method is that the complicated 3D model could be used to generate the multi-dimensional grasp configurations. The developed algorithm has been validated on some typical robotic hand. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves excellent performance. © 2019 IEEE.

Multi-scale pseudo-labels filtering and key pixels adversarial alignment for domain adaptive object detection

Domain Adaptive Object Detection (DAOD) aims to adapt a detector trained on the labeled source domain to perform effectively on the unlabeled target domain. Most existing DAOD methods commonly employ self-training strategy and adversarial learning. However, the methods based on the self-training strategy often generate unreliable pseudo-labels (e.g., missing detections and false positives) due to the absence of target domain semantics, resulting in suboptimal models. Meanwhile, aligning a large number of unimportant pixels hampers adversarial learning’s ability to capture domain-invariant semantic information. Therefore, we propose the Multi-scale Adversarial Teacher Framework (MATF) based on the common self-training framework (teacher–student framework). Specifically, to mitigate the impact of unreliable pseudo-labels, we propose the Multi-scale Negatives Filtering (MNF) module in the teacher model, which prevents missing detections from damaging the model by filtering out unreliable negative samples at multiple feature scales. In addition, we propose the Multi-scale key-Pixel Discriminator (MKPD), which predicts the distributions of key pixels at multiple feature scales emphasizing the adversarial alignment of key pixels rather than unimportant pixels. Finally, to generate higher-quality pseudo-labels, we introduce the discriminator into the student model to reduce the model’s bias towards the source domain. Unlike most methods, we construct our method on a computationally efficient but less work-intensive one-stage detector. Extensive experiments conducted on DAOD benchmark datasets such as Cityscapes, FoggyCityscapes, KITTI, and Sim10k demonstrate the strong adaptability and effectiveness of MATF.

A High-Fidelity Virtual Liver Model Incorporating Biological Characteristics

Flexible tissue modeling plays an important role in the field of telemedicine. It is related to whether the soft tissue deformation process can be accurately, real-time and vividly simulated during surgery. Most existing models lack the unique biological characteristics. To enhance visual perception ability, a high-fidelity virtual liver model incorporating biological characteristics, such as the viscoelastic, anisotropic and nonlinear biological characteristics, is proposed based on the finite element model with the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. When simulating the resection of diseased livers, the model undergoes a plastic deformation process where the model loses elasticity due to excessive deformation, but does not reach the cutting fracture threshold. To improve the fidelity of the liver model, this study is the first to introduce the viscoplasticity of biological tissues to the liver model. The 3DMax2020 and OpenGL4.6 were used to build a liver surgery simulation platform, and the PHANTOM OMNI manual controller was used to sense the feedback force during the operation. The proposed model was verified from three aspects of accuracy, fidelity and real-time performance. The experimental results show that the proposed virtual liver model can achieve real visual reproduction, with natural deformation effect, accurate simulation and high fidelity. © 2022, The Authors. A new scheme for producing semidiscrete self-trapped vortices ("swirling photon droplets") in photonic crystals with competing quadratic (χ(2)) and self-defocusing cubic (χ(3)) nonlinearities is proposed. The photonic crystal is designed with a striped structure, in the form of spatially periodic modulation of the χ(2) susceptibility, which is imposed by the quasi-phase-matching technique. Unlike previous realizations of semidiscrete optical modes in composite media, built as combinations of continuous and arrayed discrete waveguides, the semidiscrete vortex "droplets" are produced here in the fully continuous medium. This work reveals that the system supports two types of semidiscrete vortex droplets, viz., onsite- and intersite-centered ones, which feature, respectively, odd and even numbers of stripes, N. Stability areas for the states with different values of N are identified in the system's parameter space. Some stability areas overlap with each other, giving rise to the multistability of states with different N. The coexisting states are mutually degenerate, featuring equal values of the Hamiltonian and propagation constant. An experimental scheme to realize the droplets is outlined, suggesting new possibilities for the long-distance transmission of nontrivial vortex beams in nonlinear media. © 2023, CC BY.

Flux-switching permanent magnet motor (FSPMM) is a new stator permanent magnet brushless motor. It overcomes many shortcomings of the conventional permanent magnet motor having magnets in the rotor and has a well application prospect. The three-phase 12-slots/10-poles FSPMM is used as the control object. On the basis of the working principles, the mathematical models have deduced and the mechanical properties are calculated. The characteristics of the electromagnetic are analysed by setting up the steady and dynamic-state models of the FSPMM. Linear Active Disturbance Rejection control (LADRC) is designed in the speed loop of the FSPMM to realize the linear control of the nonlinear system. By using the Linear Extended State Observer (LESO), the total disturbances can be estimated and compensated in real time. The performance robustness is verified by the Monte Carlo experiments of the two control strategies, including the LADRC algorithm, and the traditional PI control strategy. The results show that LADRC strategy has a greater capability of disturbance rejecting and stronger performance robustness. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Multiple electric vehicles simultaneously connected to a distribution load network will significantly impact the stability of the power grid. This paper proposes an improved Honey-badger algorithm (IHBA) through elite reverse learning, spiral update, and wild dog survival strategies to optimize the orderly charging of electric vehicles (EV). Objective functions of EV charge orderly planning are taken by using load fluctuation satisfaction, user cost satisfaction, and user convenience satisfaction to achieve the high efficiency of orderly charging. The benchmark test function and the electric vehicle se-quential charging problem were employed to evaluate the proposed IHBA approach. The obtained results are compared with the other algorithms in the literature, which indicate that the IHBA algorithm does not only provides more accurate outcome but better con-vergence speed than the other competitors. © 2022;Taiwan Ubiquitous Information CO LTD.
